I'm not likely to make so many of these cherry brooches all at once any time soon... it's nice to see them all together.
Resisted the temptation to stay by the stove today and instead went out to plod through the wet ground and drizzle.
Had I stayed at home I would have missed the day the larch trees lit up the gloom.
how can one resist a cloudless afternoon in shanghai?! made a rush trip to the bund on puxi side and attempted this long exposure. looking across the bund, the 4 landmarks on pudong side - oriental pearl tower, jin mao tower, shanghai world financial centre and shanghai tower clearly defines shanghai's modern city skyline.
even the little one couldn't resist dipping her toes :)
P.S: My feeble attempt to spice up Monday blues ;)
Have a great week folks.
Hands Off! Protest in Vero Beach, Florida on April 5, 2025. A large crowd of over 2000 showed up to protest Trump and Elon Musk policies and the havoc caused by DOGE. This was one of 1200 locations where people raised their voices across the nation with more than 5 million participating. Resist!
Taking a break from revisiting my travel photographs. I was recently at a protest in the city, these are the photographs I ended up with.

i have such a strong desire to rip her open and gaze correct... i'm trying to resist.
This brave woman was one of several people arrested in Trafalgar Square for daring to peacefully resist the government's inaction on the climate and cost of living crisis. She had been participating in a "Just Stop Oil" demo, by sitting on the road, on the south side of the square and had been holding a placard declaring "We will not pay for greed."
Another activist explained his own interpretation of the placard - "We refuse to go hungry to feed your profits, we refuse to sacrifice our planet on the altar of greed."
This and other similar protests occur as a tiny corporate minority are profiteering from the surge in the oil price, inflicting misery on working families, and while also benefiting the government's backing for new oil fields.
The UK's mainstream TV network Sky News network reported in August 2022 that "the country has seen a huge spike in the number of people becoming billionaires." - Yes, that's right, a "huge spike" in the middle of the UK's longest decline in working families' living standards in 200 years.

The UK government claims that it doesn't have enough funds to support the NHS, the disabled, the homeless or working families who can't afford to heat their homes. It also explains its inability to take any of the steps desperately needed to avert catastrophic climate change, due to the supposed cost.
All the while it allows UK oil companies to profit from the Ukraine War by setting the maximum possible market price thereby plunging ordinary families into poverty. It also continues to allow individuals and corporations to hide their wealth in tax havens, hands out billions by propping up, via the Bank of England's open market operations, the assets of wealthy bond holders and it still privileges multinationals with the lowest corporation tax, by a significant margin, in the G7, and also in the G20.
According to the Just Stop Oil website, just a few days prior to when this photo was taken, a spokesperson for the activist group set out their demands -
“Rishi Sunak is about to U-turn on attending COP27. We demand that he also U-turn on new oil and gas. This genocidal policy will kill millions of people, while failing to address the worst cost of living crisis this country has ever seen.
“Its time for a serious windfall tax on big oil, without the get-out-of-jail-free tax credits that will encourage more oil and gas that we cannot afford. Vulnerable people will be freezing to death in their homes this winter, unable to afford a can of soup, while his government refuses to tax the rich and the big energy companies that are profiting from our misery.
“We owe it to our young people to stop fossil fuels, we owe it to our workers to create a just transition to a zero-carbon economy, we owe it to our old people to enable them to live with dignity. We are not prepared to stand by and watch while everything we love is destroyed."

I found this tourist attraction in a parking lot in Wimauma, Fl. The leaning tower may not attract many other tourists, but I couldn't resist.
In June 2021 thousands protested in London over Israel-Gaza violence. The organisers of the protest called on the UK government to stop allowing what they described as "Israel's brutal violence against and oppression of the Palestinian people".

Ora e Sempre Resistenza
This was taken partly for the 52 Weeks for Dogs "May Flowers" challenge... & partly because I never *can* resist taking photos of dogs with flowers (as both Flynn & his big brother Barney could confirm!). Our local woods are so pretty this time of year, with many different species of wildflowers to be found alongside the paths. The bluebells are just past their peak now but new flowers seem to appear every day.
Our little market town is something of a tourist attraction, so some weekends in spring & summer the woods are very busy with visitors. I wouldn't mind too much but Flynn can be somewhat nervy around new dogs, particularly if they look like bouncy or pushy types & though he's never been problematic around kids, given his past behavioural issues, I am cautious about letting him run about near children. This means that on days when the woods are crowded, we often end up hiding & taking "paths" which are likely used mostly by deer & badgers & are usually quite overgrown, sometimes disappearing entirely. Flynn, being the sensitive little flower he is, occasionally threatens to go on strike during these mini- adventures off the beaten track because he strongly objects to walking over any kind of spiky plant, or having to wriggle through brambles! However, we were lucky today, especially given it's a bank holiday weekend. We spent a good hour or two slowly pottering along, stopping for photos & saw only 2 other people the entire time. Just how we like it!!
It’s not ideal to balance pebbles with a coming windstorm. So you choose stones that are heavier and that resist gusts of wind.
When I was walking around the neighbourhood yesterday, I called in for a chat with one of my neighbours. She is a great lover of dogs and has two of her own, but she often looks after this little lady. What a sad face!!

Several hundred people turned out for the "Good Trouble" event in Vero Beach, Florida on July 17th, 2025. Today's "Good Trouble" event was a nationwide day of action called "Good Trouble Lives On," honoring the legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis. It involved over 1,600 events across the country, focusing on peaceful, nonviolent action and organizing rooted in the Civil Rights Movement, but addressing current challenges. Specifically, the protests targeted the Trump administration's policies related to civil rights, including deportations, healthcare cuts, and attacks on voting rights and social programs.
friday i helped my friend jen in her garden. catching up + weeding = good therapy.
this is her dog, ida. (playing with ida is also good therapy.) i couldn't resist this ground-level view of ida. close-ups of dogs always make me smile.
Yesterday saw some excellent skies over north Pembrokeshire so it was an easy choice to go out at evening time to see what would transpire. Newport Sands was my chosen destination although I couldn't resist this view from Iron Bridge on the estuary on my way there.

Ordinarily, flower-baskets are round and for hanging up...
Gathered the Hydrangea heads in one basket, I decided to photograph the whole scene instead of an 'isolated' few (which I could not resist doing anyway, phaaahhh).
They are nicely drying and getting the 'Autumn' colours... for the rest of the year.
I love them!
With love to you and thank you for ALL your faves and comments, M, (* _ *)

Combien on vu l’invisible ?

Apologies for posting another Red Admiral photo, but we have had so many of these beautiful butterflies in the garden this year that it has been hard to resist the temptation to photograph them. For better detail, please view large.
The Red Admiral (Vanessa Atalanta) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The Red Admiral has a 45–50 mm (1.8–2.0 in) wing span. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.
This medium-sized butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red, and black wing pattern. More specifically, the dark wings possess orange bands that cross the fore wings and on the outer edge of the hind wings; white spots on the dorsal fore wings near the front margin; reddish bars on dorsal surface of all four wings. The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.
In northern Europe, it is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the flowers of ivy on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging individuals showing prominently darker colourings than first brood subjects. The butterfly also flies on sunny winter days, especially in southern Europe.
In North America, the Red Admiral generally has two broods from March through October. Most of North America must be recolonized each spring by southern migrants, but this species over-winters in south Texas.

How could you resist not capturing a line-up like his in 2013. This was the remarkable scene at Carlisle on Friday 8th Mayrch 2013 with 86101 'Sir William A. Stanier FRS', 87002 'Royal Sovereign' and 37419 'Carl Haviland' stabled alongside the station.
86101 was built at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows and entering traffic as E3191 in December 1965, and was subsequently re-numbered under the TOPs scheme to 86201 on the 16th of August 1973, and again re-numbered on the 20th of June 1974 to 86101. The locomotive was named 'Sir William A. Stanier FRS' on the 27th October 1978 at Liverpool. 86101 was purchased by the AC Locomotive Group in 2005 and has been restored to main line condition. The loco was one of three test-bed units converted in the early 1970's from standard Class 86's to trial traction equipment for the upcoming Class 87's. Fitted with a Class 87-type transformer and bogies, the 86/1's saw front-line use on West Coast Main Line services until the late 1990s.
87002 was built by BREL Crewe, and entered into traffic in June 1973. Originally named 'Royal Sovereign' on the 4th of July 1978, the locomotive carried that name untill 2003 when it was repainted into purple livery to promote its then owners, Porterbrook Leasing. It remained nameless until April 2005 when it was named "The AC Locomotive Group" at Wembley depot. 87002 had the distinction of heading the last official Virgin West Coast diagrammed Class 87-hauled train, along with 87010 on 10th June 2005, and hauled the very last Virgin diagrammed Class 87-hauled train on 22nd December 2006.
37419 was released from English Electric Vulcan Foundry as D6991 in 1965 and allocated to Cardiff Canton. Renumbered as 37291 under the TOPs scheme in March 1974 and in December 1985 renumbered 37419 after a rebuild at Crewe Works. Purchased by DRS from DB Schenker in January 2011.
