This flower defines the word "resilience"! This fabulously healthy flower lives on top of the windswept sand dunes of the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado (USA).

Resilience: "adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma or stress".

This lonely bush is surviving where little else can survive, being subjected to bright sunlight, daytime heat, cold nights, seasonal high winds and very little rain, made more severe by climatic change.

My photo was taken in 1971 during a road trip stop in Utah's Monument Valley, USA; the scene of many a Western movie, characterised by buttes and mesas in spectacular settings.

Strawflower/Helichrysum Still Life

This mosaic is made in the form of a Nubian pyramid in the school grounds of Berry Hill Primary School in Mansfield.

I worked with Yrs 5 and 6 over the autumn term to design and create the four sides of the pyramid, each depicting an aspect of their school's ethos.

These sides depict (left) 'Resilience' and (right) 'Respect'

The moment we believe that success is determined by an ingrained level of ability as opposed to resilience and hard work, we will be brittle in the face of adversity.

When I first saw this dice element, I thought it was a bit of a large commitment for such a niche application. Now that they are out in the wild, I'm glad to have one.

Please remember, change will come. It has to, and we all need to continue to be part of the process.

The picture was made in the beautiful Vestmanneyjar Island in Iceland

delicate but hardy winter warriors in afternoon light

To me the Lady Slipper is the picture of resilience. It grows in oil rich sandy soil and lives through minus 40 degree winters and just soaks it all up.

A few days ago a downy woodpecker hit my patio window and fell head down, wings wide open into a blanket of freshly fallen snow. I stepped outside and gently pulled it out of the snow to allow him to breathe. He immediately closed its wings and fell on its side. His heart was beating very fast and he was winking continuously. That's when I felt quite sure that he would probably make it. After taking a few shots, I decided to set the camera on a tripod and start filming. According to my exifs , it took a bout 25 minutes for him to recover from the shock and muster enough energy to fly off and perch quite high at the end of the garden where he remained for a good 10 minutes just looking around. He then flew off out of sight. The resilience of these little guys will never cease to amaze me.

On a "Angry Bird" theme, interpreted by Angèle Dubeau.

Courage doesn't always roar.

Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying,

'I will try again tomorrow' .

Steps away from a big box store, a mosque and a busy expressway wildlife can still be found.

Because it's one of my favorite words in the English language.

I don't share photos with others, including family or friends, not for secretive reasons but simply because I don't feel comfortable doing so. It may seem silly, but I can't help it!

Maybe for the same reason why I like to spend time at the bookstores and with a camera alone. Silly reason, but I can't help it!

Resilience: "adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma or stress".

The Haleakala Silversword plant in the foreground is very rare and only grows in the caldera of Haleakala, a large 10,000 ft. dormant volcano on the east side of Maui Island. It grows only above 7,000 ft.on the volcanic cinder, as visible in the photo, where nothing else can survive, being subjected to bright sunlight, daytime heat, freezing nights and seasonal high winds made more severe by climatic change. Besides natural pressures this threatened species was reduced by grazing animals, vandals and trophy hunters.

My photo was taken in 1981 during a hike across Haleakala's substantial caldera in the heat and dust; a hostile environment made worse as I suffer from altitude sickness (see my Nepal album for more on that).

This visit in 1981 preceded determined effort by the National Park Service to protect the caldera's ecology from harm by ever-increasing but usually well-meaning visitors.

It's harder these days but staying positive will help you stay resilient. Resilience is essential to getting through these hard times. Think of something positive before you fall asleep, it will help you stay strong.

I went out to check after about two hours of heavy rain; it was still there, elegant as ever!
