Rem Koolhaas nasceu na Holanda em 1944 e começou a estudar arquitectura em Londres. Em 1972 partiu com uma bolsa para os Estados Unidos, onde o fascínio por Nova Iorque o levou a debruçar-se sobre o impacto da cultura metropolitana na arquitectura. Foi precisamente a necessidade de definir - na teoria e na prática - os novos tipos de relação entre arquitectura e cultura que o levou a criar, em 1975, o OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), o gabinete de arquitectura que, em 1999, apresentou a proposta vencedora da Casa da Música do Porto.
Rem Koolhaas é um nome de projecção internacional na arquitectura contemporânea. Entre outros prémios, podem citar-se os que o distinguiram mais recentemente, como o Pritzker (um equivalente de Nobel da Arquitectura), em 2000, e o Prémio de Arquitectura da União Europeia Mies van der Rohe, pelo edifício da Embaixada da Holanda em Berlim, atribuído em Abril de 2005.
A ousadia e radicalismo da sua arquitectura é razão para muitas vezes receber o rótulo de "incatalogável". Destacam-se entre as suas obras, o Congrexpo, em Lille, a Biblioteca Pública de Seattle, a loja da Prada, em Nova Iorque, a Casa da Música, no Porto, e a Central da Televisão Chinesa (CCTV), em Pequim, que está actualmente em construção e irá fazer a abertura dos Jogos Olímpicos de 2008.

REM Island was a platform built in the Republic of Ireland and towed off the Dutch coast in 1964 as the pirate broadcasting home of Radio and TV Noordzee. Now a restaurant in Amsterdam.
