Het REM-eiland was een platform in de Noordzee, op 9 kilometer buiten de kust van Noordwijk. Van 12 augustus tot 14 december 1964 werden vanaf deze basis commerciële televisie-uitzendingen onder de naam TV Noordzee verzorgd. Sinds 2011 staat het REM-eiland in de Nieuwe Houthaven in Amsterdam. Er is onder andere een restaurant in gevestigd.
In 1963 werd de Reclame Exploitatie Maatschappij (REM) gesticht. Omdat de Nederlandse wetgeving dit niet toestond, zouden de uitzendingen geschieden vanaf een locatie juist buiten de territoriale wateren (6 mijl uit de kust van Noordwijk). Uitzenden vanaf een basis op zee werd veiliger geacht dan uitzendingen vanaf een schip zoals Veronica al deed.
Op 12 augustus vond een proefuitzending plaats en op 15 augustus 1964 begonnen de reguliere uitzendingen. Op 17 december van datzelfde jaar werd de apparatuur van het REM-eiland echter door de Rijkspolitie tijdens een actie met de Koninklijke Marine geconfisqueerd.
Het platform werd overgenomen door de Nederlandse Staat en was vanaf 1974 geruime tijd in gebruik bij Rijkswaterstaat als Meetpost Noordwijk, waar bijvoorbeeld de hoogte van de golven, de watertemperatuur en het zoutgehalte worden gemeten. In de zomer van 2004 werd de meetpost ontmanteld en enkele maanden later werd het REM-eiland te koop aangeboden.
In 2009 kocht woningcorporatie De Key uit Amsterdam het platform en bracht het van Vlissingen naar Delfzijl. Daar werd het verbouwd, en werd er een verdieping bovenop gezet. Eind maart 2011 werd het REM-eiland overgebracht naar de Nieuwe Houthaven, bij de Haparandadam in Amsterdam. Het gerenoveerde REM-eiland biedt sinds 2011 onderdak aan een restaurant en daarnaast is het een publiekelijk toegankelijk uitkijkpunt met uitzicht over de Houthaven en het IJ.
REM Island is a platform built in the Republic of Ireland and towed off the Dutch coast in 1964 as the pirate broadcasting home of Radio and TV Noordzee. It was towed to its location and anchored in cement on the seabed. On 12 August 1964 a test broadcast was performed and on 15 August regular broadcasting started.
REM stands for Reclame Exploitatie Maatschappij ("advertising exploitation company"). The company intended to broadcast commercial radio and TV. Dutch law at the time did not authorise such broadcasts but the island was outside territorial waters. Both stations were dismantled on 17 December 1963 by the Netherlands Armed Forces. It was 10 km off Noordwijk.

This pirate-broadcasting-tower-turned-restaurant played a rebellious role in the history of Dutch television.
The restaurant known as REM Eiland wasn’t always an architectural oddity in the Amsterdam port of Houthaven. The 80-foot-tall, red-and-white tower was originally a pirate radio and TV station in the North Sea, and it gave Dutch viewers their first taste of commercial television.
It was 1964, and up to that point, there’d only been state-sponsored television. From the tower, a channel called TV Noordzee broadcast shows such as Zorro, Rin-Tin-Tin, and Mr. Ed, along with commercials. While viewers were entertained, the government was not: The tower’s location in international waters allowed TV Noordzee to circumvent Dutch laws. But this rebellion was short-lived: Four months after TV Noordzee launched, the government found a way to use the 1958 Geneva Convention to justify restructuring offshore territorial boundaries. And with that, REM Eiland fell under Dutch control. On December 17, 1964, marines raided the tower and shut down operations.
The government used the tower as a site for measuring ocean temperatures and salt levels before dismantling it and bringing it ashore in 2006. But just when REM Eiland seemed like it might disappear for good, new owners purchased it and started renovations (including adding another floor and losing the helipad) to turn it into the restaurant it is today.
