The Netherlands - Amsterdam
REM-Eiland is a former North Sea offshore platform, used as the commercial TV channel just outside the Dutch territorial waters, 9 km off the coast. After the adoption of an emergency law by the Dutch Parliament in december 1964, the channel became ilegal and during a raid of the Royal Navy the broadcasting equipment was confiscated. TV Noordzee existed only 4 months. Most memorable broadcast for me, back then as a 9 year old boy, was Mr. Ed the talking horse. Out of this channel arose the broadcasting association TROS, merged into AVROTROS since 2014. Piloté par André Turcat et Jacques Guignard lors de son 1er vol, le 2 mars 1969. Cet appareil était destiné à valider la formule d’avion de transport supersonique. Il a été remis au musée le 19 octobre 1973 après 397 vols d’essais et 812 heures de vol, dont 255 supersoniques.
Le prototype participa non seulement aux essais techniques, mais aussi environnementaux comme les effets de l’onde de choc au sol ou la mise au point de moteurs émettant moins de fumée. Le 30 juin 1973, piloté par André Turcat il accomplit un vol de Las Palmas à Fort-Lamy qui permit à des astronomes d’observer en continu pendant 74 minutes une éclipse solaire. D’autre part le 001, servit aussi au prestige de la France quand le l7 mai 1971 le Président Pompidou devint le premier chef d’Etat à voler à Mach 2.
Après avoir accumulé 812 heures de vol dont 255 en supersonique, Concorde 001 termina son 397e vol en se posant devant le musée de l’Air et de l’Espace le 19 octobre 1973.

Het REM-eiland was een platform in de Noordzee, op 9 kilometer buiten de kust van Noordwijk. Van 12 augustus tot 14 december 1964 werden vanaf deze basis commerciële televisie-uitzendingen onder de naam TV Noordzee verzorgd. Sinds 2011 staat het REM-eiland in de Nieuwe Houthaven in Amsterdam. Er is onder andere een restaurant in gevestigd.
In 1963 werd de Reclame Exploitatie Maatschappij (REM) gesticht. Omdat de Nederlandse wetgeving dit niet toestond, zouden de uitzendingen geschieden vanaf een locatie juist buiten de territoriale wateren (6 mijl uit de kust van Noordwijk). Uitzenden vanaf een basis op zee werd veiliger geacht dan uitzendingen vanaf een schip zoals Veronica al deed.
Op 12 augustus vond een proefuitzending plaats en op 15 augustus 1964 begonnen de reguliere uitzendingen. Op 17 december van datzelfde jaar werd de apparatuur van het REM-eiland echter door de Rijkspolitie tijdens een actie met de Koninklijke Marine geconfisqueerd.
Het platform werd overgenomen door de Nederlandse Staat en was vanaf 1974 geruime tijd in gebruik bij Rijkswaterstaat als Meetpost Noordwijk, waar bijvoorbeeld de hoogte van de golven, de watertemperatuur en het zoutgehalte worden gemeten. In de zomer van 2004 werd de meetpost ontmanteld en enkele maanden later werd het REM-eiland te koop aangeboden.
In 2009 kocht woningcorporatie De Key uit Amsterdam het platform en bracht het van Vlissingen naar Delfzijl. Daar werd het verbouwd, en werd er een verdieping bovenop gezet. Eind maart 2011 werd het REM-eiland overgebracht naar de Nieuwe Houthaven, bij de Haparandadam in Amsterdam. Het gerenoveerde REM-eiland biedt sinds 2011 onderdak aan een restaurant en daarnaast is het een publiekelijk toegankelijk uitkijkpunt met uitzicht over de Houthaven en het IJ.
REM Island is a platform built in the Republic of Ireland and towed off the Dutch coast in 1964 as the pirate broadcasting home of Radio and TV Noordzee. It was towed to its location and anchored in cement on the seabed. On 12 August 1964 a test broadcast was performed and on 15 August regular broadcasting started.
REM stands for Reclame Exploitatie Maatschappij ("advertising exploitation company"). The company intended to broadcast commercial radio and TV. Dutch law at the time did not authorise such broadcasts but the island was outside territorial waters. Both stations were dismantled on 17 December 1963 by the Netherlands Armed Forces. It was 10 km off Noordwijk.
Since March 2011 the platform sits in Amsterdam harbour where it serves as a restaurant. (Wikipedia)
