I came across this area last winter after an unusual southern snowfall and was mesmerized by the beauty and the feeling that I had entered into an inner sanctuary, a kind of sacred space. The sounds of the world outside are muffled under a canopy of these fascinating trees. It is a place of silence and solitude ... a place of refuge.

Three male northern shovelers, a northern pintail and a female northern shoveler fly away at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.
Why Refuge? This abandoned facility had more wildlife than some of the local parks and wildlife areas... Fox, Deer, hawks and screech Owls to name a few.. quite an interesting night.
This photo was taken with a medium format Mamiya RB67. It is one of the first attempts at night photography on film in medium format... there were quite a few which did not turn out, but, I expected this as I am learning this camera and all the nifty nuances..
This is a magnificent camera, I love the feel and the mechanical nature of it.. it really makes you think about your shot and not to mention, when I see the end results and talk to others, reminds me of how much I need to learn.
I have to say, I am into instant gratification and that is what I love about digital, not so much the ability to toy with photos (albeit that is fun), it is the ability to see that shot right away!
I have since purchased or revived a number of cameras to toy around with Film and I must thank Chocolate Milk for the inspiration and the push to experiment a little more with film again.
So.. thanks Dude, you da man! hehe

I watched this red tailed hawk land on the angled limb of a tree, literally walk up it, then pose for a few photos just before I left the refuge.
how many stories have been told in this place
a gallery of other peoples shots of the same view as we are rather herded via the viewing platform into the same place and this is an obvious shot from that place...

Beautiful blue mountain ridges fading toward the approaching sunset. At the Las Vegas NM National Wildlife Refuge.
Not long after beginning the drive into the National Elk Refuge around Jackson, Wyoming, we came across this lone bald eagle. I was lucky my friend had a Sigma 150-500mm. My first chance to actually use it or something similar. Having seen long reach type lenses during a trip to Yellowstone, I'd been very interested in one. I will tell you that keeping steady isn't easy but having Sigma's OS is very nice!
Anywho, to the image. Bald eagle seemingly guarding a carcass. Probably of an elk. When we came back later, a raven was flying around the bald eagle. For this image capture, I loved the colors of the bald eagle against the yellow/brown of the winter grass. A nice contrast.
Images from a sunset at both Lake Illawarra and Barrack Point on the same afternoon.... the heat and humifity at the lake was quite oppressive and that storm cell heading north east was just too interesting not to head over to the ocean to see the show.
