This looks like a nice reason to stop for a photo. January 2006 after 7 inches of new snow fell the night before in Bryce National Park.
One of my favorite birds and the reason I bought my Canon 600 f/4 prime lens - I found this drake hooded merganser at Lake Artemesia today with another drake and two hens. Little did he know that I had finally calibrated my Canon 2x tele-converter on my 7D2 and 600 using my lens align system and was going to test it out on some unsuspecting birds. So, Mr. Hoodie became my first test subject to see if I could focus with an astonishing 1920mm effective (7D2 body, 2.0 extender, and 600mm lens is 1.6 X 2.0 X 600 = 1920) and actually get a nice photo out of it. Why do this at all? Well, most of the hooded mergansers I've met aren't really a sociable lot. They seem uncomfortable around humans and they like to stay far far away towards the middle of the lake if they can. But the 2X introduces another problem and it's a huge consideration. Can I keep the camera and lens stable enough so that I didn't get a blurry photography. The longer the effective the more of a problem this is and this is as long as I can get and still use autofocus on my 7D2 body. I was shooting this camera combination on a tripod with a Wimberly head.
Well, you be the judge! How do you think it all worked out? Did I nail it or get a blurry photo? Thank you for looking and giving me feedback my friends!

For whatever reason the good storms have been avoiding the Tucson area this year, depriving me of the opportunity to get good lightning shots!
This is about the best that I've got so far, the storm was about 14-15 miles east of us. Really lighting up but the lightning was pretty much all cloud to cloud. With any luck and a sacrifice to the weather gods I'll hopefully be able to come up with something a bit better!
BTW, the light spots up above the clouds are not hot pixels but stars!
Wishing all of my flickr friends all the Best!

► █░▓ ≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ SUNRISE from behind an artificial vertical 'horizon'. The condo tower blocks my view of the natural horizon at 123° where the sunrise took place at 8:11 on November 22nd. So I had to wait another 9 minutes until the sun first appeared through a condo window. It was worth waiting.
The prominent church tower exactly 2 km (1,24 mi) from my lens belongs to St. Nichola's or Holy Spirit chapel. The chapel has been pulled down in 1835 but they fortunately kept the facade and this tower. The premises served as a charity spot (bread handed out to poor) until the various protestant denominations alternately got hold of it. The municipality got involved in the maintenance too. However, in 2011. it was all over. This very old chapel in Arkelstraat became a fashion clothing store ("Van Zuilen Mode"). A trend which by the way stormed the churches in the Lowlands at the turn of the century.
Left behind the church tower, at 8,3 km (5,17 mi) as the crow flies FeedValid animal feed and waste recycling factory in Munnikenland. It is difficult to believe that the distance between the church tower and the factory exceeds 6 km! Such is the perspective flattening of the 800 mm full-frame equivalent. It would take at least half an hour ride by car to get there, if not more.
To the right of the church tower are the two arms of the grain windmill "De Hoop", 500 m behind the church tower, marking the edge of the town and the river shore. The full view of the windmill and the old town's heart is blocked by the roof of the local hospital.
Exactly 2 km behind the church tower is the point where the river Maas (Meuse, "Afgedamde Maas" there) joins the Rhein's strongest branch Waal. The junction is the reason for Rhein to acquire yet another name, "Boven Merwede", which shall after 9 km split into Beneden Merwede and Nieuwe Merwede.

For whatever reason, I thought white borage would look nice. Blue borage looks much better. I bought white borage seeds, and in the second generation all the plants were blue, and my garden is full of blue borage now.
There goes my heart beating
Cause you are the reason
I'm losing my sleep
Please come back now
There goes my mind racing
And you are the reason
That I'm still breathing
I'm hopeless now
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, ‘cause I need you to see
That you are the reason
There goes my hands shaking
Cause you are the reason
My heart keeps bleeding
And I need you now
If I could turn back the clock
I'd make sure the light defeated the dark
I'd spend every hour, of every day
Keeping you safe
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, ‘cause I need you to see
That you are the reason
You are the reason
Yeah, yeah...
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, ‘cause I need you to see
That you are the reason..."

I just returned from a 3 week road trip through the US Southwest. That's the reason why I wasn't very active on social media lately.
It was mainly a family vacation and not an astrophotography trip. The bright moon kept me from doing astrophotography during the first two weeks, but it was nevertheless an awesome journey. I was able to show some of the stunning spots I visited during my previous astro travels to my wife and kids and I scouted a few new possible spots for the future. We did a lot of fun hikes and drove quite a few remote dirt roads.
During the third week, I was able to sneak away and capture some nightscapes. The images are, however, still sitting on my SD card and will have to wait a while for processing, as my work will already take me back to Los Angeles tomorrow.
To convey the feeling of a night under the starfilled desert sky, I publish the above image. I captured it in early February during a Los Angeles layover.

The alarm today went off at 5am, over two hours before sunrise. The reason for the early alarm was the drive to Canyonlands National Park and the ensuing walk to Mesa Arch would take nearly an hour and I wanted to be able to plant my tripod before everyone else arrived. Driving out of Moab the streets were void of traffic and after turning onto the road leading to Canyonlands there weren’t any headlights in the rearview mirror or were there taillights visible ahead. I was confident that I had departed at an appropriately early enough time.
After entering the National Park I noticed a few taillights ahead of me in the distance. “OK, I guess there may be a few early risers there,” I thought. How wrong I was, for as I crested the rise in the dark with my headlamp guiding my way along the path to Mesa Arch I could hear many voices coming from ahead. I wasn’t alone and it wasn’t just a couple of early risers either. There were already 15 to 20 tripods with accompanying cameras and photographers set up waiting for sunrise! Fortunately, the location I had scouted out the day prior was still available, so I joined the masses and added my tripod and camera to the mix. Note to self: rethink the starting time for my next visit!
The beauty of the sunrise here is something one truly needs to witness in person. As the sun broke the horizon the first sunburst occurred, but the best was yet to come. Initially there is the lack of reflected light on the underside of Mesa Arch. But as the sun continued to rise and began to cross the underside of the arch a 2nd sunburst occurred while the reflected light illuminated the underbelly of the arch turning the sandstone a glowing red. While some photographers had already started packing up, the patience of ‘waiting for the light’ was rewarded with this image.
Highlighted by the rising sun is the Washer Woman (derived from its resemblance of a tall and slender woman reaching her hands into a tub) and to its right is the taller Monster Tower. Washer Woman and Monster Tower are each over 600 feet tall. Behind the Washer Woman is the Sandcastle.
This is the second image I’ve posted from that wonderful morning, but this one was taken moments earlier than the previous one. The sunburst is larger in this image as the sun has yet to rise high enough to be partially hidden by the arch.
From the earlier image, Kathleen had commented . . . “I can see an Indian lying in repose, hand in his lap and his legs crossed........lying in the opening, do you see him?” Yes, I could! Can you?

The reasons for the white tiger being almost extinct in the wild is because it lacks the natural camouflage of normally colored tigers, and most of those born are killed by predators as they are young and vulnerable, and more so because they stand out. Those that do survive and make it to adulthood, have a hard time hunting for the same reason - lack of camouflage. Sadly, they are hunted down for their beautiful fur and organs.
Bearded Tits are found in reed beds throughout the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North Africa. For this reason they are also called Reed Buntings. It is not a tit as such, but belongs to a unique group of its own. The way they move about reeds beds, however, in small groups, they are more like long-tailed tits. They feed on small reed aphids and small insect, but come autumn and winter they switch to reed seeds. This one is the male of the species. It has more of a moustache than a beard, a feature lacking in females.
I am occasionally asked why I like hill walking so much. After all, as people point out to me, you can get very cold, very wet, very tired and very lost. And there is always a degree of risk involved.
All this is true.
I have been very cold, very wet, very tired and very lost.
But I still love it.
I love the quiet satisfaction of getting from A to B with nothing more than a map and compass.
I love the fresh air.
I love the quietness.
I love seeing the wildlife.
I love the hunger that a day on the hills brings, and the fact that the food tastes so much better.
I love the thirst that a long walk brings and there’s nothing better than to sit in a nice warm pub, with a pint of good beer and let the ache of tiredness waft over me.
But most of all, I love it because I get to see scenery like this.
If you like this photograph as well as some of my other images, I invite you to take a look at my wildlife/birding page, which I try to update every few days, at grenfell.weebly.com and my web page at www.tekfx.ca

This low ceiling rainy Sunday is the reason why: 1) a hundred years ago the settlers built these bridges to navigate boggy sections of a river valley and 2) the landscapes are so green.

i love something corporate, and their final album ever just came out, even though it's just their greatest hits. ): i've been waiting for this since fourth grade.
i'm getting really sick of these plants and flowers and such, sorry for the lack of variety but i expect some wonderful pictures tonight because i'm going to a sleepover. (:
if anyone has any suggestions on things i could do better in my shots, please don't be hasty and just tell me. i'm in complete need of growth.
by the way, hello. (: there was almost a tornado on tuesday. i was crying really hard because the funnel was right above the track we were running on for our meet and my mom was there but i lost her, only to find after a good 30 minutes of crying very hard that she went home before anything even happened.
whatta week. :D
+2 in comments! (when i get home from school at least :p)

Why Does the Chinese Communist Party Frantically Suppress and Persecute Religious Faith?
Introduction
The Chinese Communist Party has all along frantically suppressed, attacked and banned religious faith. They regard Christians as major criminals of the state. They do not hesitate to use revolutionary measures to suppress, capture, persecute and even slaughter them. What are their reasons for doing these things? Those who believe in God honor God as great. They revere God and they focus on seeking the truth and walking the proper path of life. Why would the Chinese Communist Party regard Christians as enemies? Why are they incompatible with people that believe in God? This video will explore the reasons why the Chinese Communist Party persecutes religious faith.

Just got back from another trip and it's always great to come home :)
Finding unexpected places like this is the main reason why I love working on my Hidden Wales project so much. I discovered this gem after a conversation with a friendly local during my lunchbreak. He suggested that I should go and check out Mrs. Hughes' shed. I was knocking on her door within twenty minutes, enquiring if it was possible to have a look and take some pictures. When I walked in to the 'shed', I was stunned to find it was actually a 19th century watermill, with most of the machinery, tools and equipment intact. Even the thick, dusty, handwritten ledgers were still on the worktop. After work I returned to finish the shoot, with a sponge cake for Mrs.Hughes.

Coal was the reason for the existence of the East Broad Top Railroad. The 33-mile, narrow gauge line was built to transport coal from the mines in hills of West Central Pennsylvania to the standard gauge lines of the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad, which interchanged with the EBT in Mt. Union. Of course, coal also fueled the EBT's locomotives, making the entire enterprise possible. In this image, the crew of EBT Locomotive #16 heads to the coal tipple at the south end of the yards in Rockhill Furnace, to fuel their locomotive for the upcoming day's operations.
This image was captured during an April, 2023 photo shoot at the East Broad Top Railroad, which featured the newly-restored Mikado #16. A close examination of the image reveals that the track immediately adjacent to the coal tipple had been removed as part of a project to rebuild the entire structure. Once the EBT Foundation completes this restoration work, the coal tipple should once again be fully operational.
I think the reason I love this place is because of the infinite possibilities it offers, from the big views to these smaller details. The way the sand clings to the stones and is then eroded by the stream is always fascinating. This S curve was too good to miss. I was lucky enough to catch this before a couple and their dog destroyed it all just moments later. I was the only other person on the beach, and had my camera pointing right at it. I couldn't help but feel it was really inconsiderate when the rest of the beach was devoid of people!
This is nothing special, just the lawn in my garden after a rainy night. The morning was lovely and the raindrops sparkled in the sunshine. I took this photo for the simple reason that I was curious how it would turn out. :)
I was going to post this yesterday, as the Atlantic Ocean hurricane season officially began on June 1. To all my friends there in the Gulf and around the Atlantic Ocean, be careful and be safe!
Jimmy Buffett sums it up better than I can...
"My second house in Key West, Florida was tucked away under fichus trees near the old Casa Marina Hotel. From my beach I could see the flashing red and green lights that marked the ship channel and ended at the Gulf Stream. Clouds used to gather over the the warm waters and spill out the rain and thunder. It was quite a light show. My front yard was my “thinking spot” in those days. I had a rocking chair and a hammock. When you come to think of it, you don't need much more..."
Cue the song of the day:
Well, the wind is blowin' harder now
Fifty knots or there abouts,
There's white caps on the ocean.
And I'm watching for water spouts
It's time to close the shutters
It's time to go inside.
Excerpt from the song: Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season
