Urubamba Mountain Range (Sacred Valley of the Inca) 20221125
Urubamba is a 50 km mountain range located within the region of Cusco, in the Peruvian Andes. The Urubambas are located right next to the Urubamba Valley, also called Sacred Valley, so many of the snow capped mountains can be seen from several points of the valley.
Although the area is mostly known for the many Inca constructions and the Machu Picchu archaeological site, the Urubamba range offers a good scenario for mountaineering and trekking.
Nestled in the southern Green Mountains of Vermont, the Lye Brook Wilderness offers a wild escape. Carved by Lye Brook, the landscape here ranges from dramatic cliffs to serene ponds and bogs. Hikers can explore a network of trails, including a portion of the famed Appalachian Trail. Lush forests with vibrant northern hardwoods like maple and birch cover much of the area, while remnants of old logging railroads hint at the wilderness's past. Lye Brook Falls, a cascading waterfall, is a popular destination, but the true beauty of this wilderness lies in its untamed spirit.

Genesis 34:5 “Because Jacob learned that Shechem had dishonored his daughter Dinah while his sons were still out with their cattle on the open range, he remained silent until they returned.”
While visiting Denali Park we decided to do some driving along the Denali Highway late evening to see what the surrounding area was like. A couple days it rained or was overcast, but we had at least one good evening. These mountains of the Alaska Range aren't special, except in this wonderful evening light!
Taken 6 July 2018 on the Denali Highway, Alaska.
A glimpse of the Ruahine Ranges with some winter icing on top. It's been a very wet winter with generally not much snow in our local area - I'm sure some will arrive yet though in the high country!

Stirling Range National Park encloses the only major mountain range with in the southern half of Western Australia. The rugged peaks, which rise to more than 1000 metres above sea level, feature stark cliff faces, sheltered gullies, magnificent views and a rich diversity of unique and colourful wildflowers. The park is one of the world’s most important areas for flora with 1500 species, many of which grow nowhere else, packed within its boundaries.

Early morning light on the Kennedy Ranges in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. This National Park was one of the highlights of our trip west. Beautiful gorges, good bush walks and stunning scenery. All without the crowds. A must if over this way.
My old friends, Though I have not spent time lately due to the pressures of life but I must do so as it is so rewarding especially a bird so skittish and difficult to photograph well.
Reduced in numbers over most of their range .
The amazing view of the Grand Teton Range from the Jackson Lake Lodge. The Lodge sits on a natural bluff overlooking Jackson Hole and the Teton Range. The Teton Range is a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains in North America. It extends for approximately 40 miles (64 km) in a north–south direction through the U.S. state of Wyoming. It's south of Yellowstone National Park and most of the east side of the range is within Grand Teton National Park.
A carnivorous animal in the same family as weasels, badgers, mink etc. that lives primarily on a diet of fish but also includes frogs, crayfish, crabs and even a few waterfowl.
A coat of long guard hairs over their insulated underfur keeps them warm and dry so they can stay comfortable throughout the North American winters. They are very successful at hunting prey in our rivers, streams and ponds aided by their webbed feet, long muscular tail and sharp claws coupled with the ability to hold their breath for extended periods. As a preventative measure to becoming waterlogged they do spend a lot of time on land and enter the water only to hunt or travel much unlike the sea otters that spend most of their lives in the ocean. An overland sprint of 10 to 18 miles while searching for prey is not uncommon.
River otters seem to have the ability to live alone or in pairs but are quick to socialize in groups when other members are encountered. After mating and going through a gestation period of 80 - 90 days a female will give birth to 1 - 5 pups in a den called a holt or couch which she excavates under tree roots or a cache of rocks. Prior to the birth the female called a bitch or sow will drive the male (dog or boar) away and the pups or cubs will be tended to by the female and older offspring if still around. The pups will begin emerging from the den at about 1 month of age and mom will entice them into the water for their first swim at about 2 months. After the pups are weaned dad may return and help raise the juveniles until probably 1 year of age. Females attain sexual maturity at 2 years of age and males at 3.
River otters range in size from 10 to 33 lbs and 2.5 to 5 ' in length with females being about 1/3 the size of males. When not hunting prey they spend much time playing and frolicking with each other. This individual is one of a trio that has clawed its way onto the ice to enjoy the spoils caught underwater.

It was cloudy and snowy morning at Nubra Valley. One can assess it by looking at those snow covered peaks of Karakoram Ranges

We climbed quite a bit and eventually you could see the Wairarapa in the distance. (sorry photo's not great)

Gatehouse Range, Annesley c. 1838 Buildings including stables, a dairy and a coach house. They are in stone on chamfered plinths, with moulded eaves, and slate roofs with coped shaped gables and kneelers.
There are two storeys, and an L-shaped plan with a front of twelve bays. The windows are mainly cross windows and mullioned casements, and most of the doors have four-centred arched heads.
To the west is an arched carriage entrance, and there is a gatehouse with a moulded arch containing a clock, and an octagonal lantern with a wind vane. The viewpoint is from the graveyard of All Saints Church
Here endeth the lesson
A pair of my fellow hikers ignore the incoming storm and seek to name the many surrounding peaks that can be viewed from Mount Fremont and it's fire watch tower. From here I could see my recently visited Suntop and Kelly Butte watch towers. It was like the scene in LOTR where they perched to light signal fires across the lands.

Trin Warren Tam-Boore Bellbird Waterhole - Melbourne
Austrália
Forty hours after waking up in our bed, we landed in Melbourne. As soon as we got our car, we drove to this place in the middle of Melbourne because we were very anxious to start photographing lifers.
The first great surprise was that we didn’t have to pay for parking. Amazing, something very unusual for us in our cities.
We immediately spotted 7 or 8 lifers.
This is a common species, and we already knew that. The problem with common species, when we’re short on time, is that we don’t spend enough time with them, and then, when we return, we regret it.

Looning north just before sunset, on an exceptionally clear afternoon. Beyond the large white condo (a vacation rental) is San Simeon Point, then Point Piedras Blancas, and in the far distance the Santa Lucia range meets the sea, where Big Sur 'officially' begins.
In the foreground are Ice Age unconsolidated sands, from great dunes that spread inland during the low sea-stand when much of the ocean water was frozen into ice-sheets a mile or more thick, over Canada, New England, and much of northern Eurasia. Dry land extended to the Farallones off future San Francisco! The last Great Warming ended only about 9,000 years ago. Of course, the Earth's climate continues to warm, as does a lively debate over how much of the warming is due to humans, and how much is natural. You won't read much about the actual scientific debate, sadly, in the popular press, as this has become an item of faith among True Believers. But, geologically speaking, we're at risk of a return of the Ice -- and human CO2 emissions may help to keep that at bay. A respectable (but controversial) hypothesis.
Typical Alaska landscape. Seems to be water most everywhere. Denali and a portion of the impressive Alaska Range in the distance.

We are looking west from the Haines Highway towards the Alsek Ranges and British Columbia's Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park. The park is located in the very northwestern corner of British Columbia, bordering the American state of Alaska and the Canadian Yukon Territory. It is part of the largest international park system in the world. The forecast looked good, yet the clouds never really lifted. It was still a wonderful place to boondock and admire the wildflowers of the subalpine meadows.
