Access was via a 2.7 kilometre hike through the bush.
This is a Brush Box, related to eucalypts. The exact age of this tree is unknown but estimates of similar trees put them at around 1000 years old. Natural wonders such as this put you in awe of the environment and this incredible old country.
As always, thanks for any comments, views or favorites, they are much appreciated!

Moss-covered tree branches crisscross across a forest scene, forming strong diagonals that enhance the composition of the still life photo taken in the Hoh Rainforest within Olympia National Park.
From our recent trip to Uclulet on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Most of the eagles have currently left the coast for rivers where salmon runs are occurring, but a few seem to hang around the coast including this one. This seemed a perfect rainforest setting for this eagle on the moss and lichen covered tree branches.

Most people think of the tropics whenever rainforests are mentioned, but there are also temperate rainforests. Tropical rainforests are found in a large band right around the globe but temperate rainforests are much rarer and more localised. They are all characterised by heavy rainfall. The Pacific coast of North America has a large swathe of temperate rainforest including here, the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia. The conifers here are largely Western Red Cedar, Hemlock, Sitka Spruce and Douglas Fir. The commonest deciduous tree is Red Alder which colonises bare areas after landslides, which are frequent.
I took this photograph early morning when the forests were shrouded in mist, but this was just as the sun started to burn through. I quite liked the combination of trees, clouds and sunshine. But it's not my usual style of photography, so I'm not sure whether people will like it.

Quinault Rainforest, Olympic National Forest, Washington
The mild winters and prodigious annual rainfall on the Pacific coast side of the Olympic Peninsula have produced several temperate rainforests. We are in the Quinault Valley, carved by glaciers and now filled with a lake and a riot of forest greenery. In this scene from the Quinault rainforest, the trunk of a large spruce is surrounded by moss-covered maple trees in their early spring leaves.
