Just started reading the Kindle edition of this book, after discovering it and two other books by Monte Palmer, an FSU emeritus professor who lives near me, who I met not long ago. This book’s clear direct writing and insights have immediately engaged my interest in the psychology, culture, and history of the Middle East, enigmas I’ve wondered about for decades in watching the U.S. and Europe continue to misunderstand the region.
The excerpt here is from pages 11 and 12. I’m now past page 30 and am finding a great many equally quotable parts.

Hi All & Tim
May I add my thanks to you all and wish you a happy Christmas and lots of good Voling together in 2018. I cannot wait. All those bonfires, cakes and sarcastic humour.
I thought I would be clever and write a piece about Tuesday incorporating some relevant quotes but the effort has quite overtaken me. So here instead are a few lines from a very wise & quotable Englishman .
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.
I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.
Never close your lips to those whom you have already opened your heart.
There are books of which the backs and covers are by far the best parts.
We forge the chains we wear in life.
No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.
There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast.
The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.
Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.
The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists.
There are loads more to choose from and I have to say I was very surprised, perhaps I should read some of his books instead of relying on BBC Childrens Dramas from my earlier years when, hard to believe I was a sprog with hopes and the occasional dream, many of which have been far exceeded in life.

Many thanks for all your hard work at Flitton Moor on Tuesday. We were slightly down on the usual numbers but it didn’t stop you getting a whole lot done! I know David was pleased with the result and in his own words:
Thanks to all those who turned out on Tuesday at Flitton Moor - you did an amazing job as always.
Re fencing: I was expecting at the very most that half of the fence would be completed - and you did 2 thirds of it. Well done. The FoFM will finish it shortly in the new year.
Thanks also to those who manned the fire - and dragged brash to it. Almost all the was cut down was burnt.
And a special mention to the 6 hardy souls who spent the morning digging nettles.

But there will also be a task at Maulden Heath next Thursday (28th) if anyone wishes to come along. The task will be clearing brash and regeneration in the Adder Field and, of course, having a fire; meet at the Picnic Area at 10am.

May I add my thanks to you all and wish you a happy Christmas and lots of good Voling together in 2018. I cannot wait. All those bonfires, cakes and sarcastic humour.
I thought I would be clever and write a piece about Tuesday incorporating some relevant quotes but the effort has quite overtaken me. So here instead are a few lines from a very wise & quotable Englishman .

Fury: "Never enough is it?"

So being Nick Fury, the ultimate manipulator, he gets a scum-bag criminal released from prison knowing the Punisher would come looking for him immediately. All Fury had to do was sit back and wait for the Punisher to come to him. And as an added bonus, the scum-bag didn't get off easy thanks to an early release - he and his crew where cut to ribbons by the Punisher just as Fury expected.

Well, well, who would have thought that we would find ex-World Champion Alan Jones in the paddock on a cold April day? He is certainly deep in conversation over the roof of a MkIV Cortina, and it may have been something to do with his recent return from retirement. 14 days earlier he had driven an Arrows A6 to third place at Brands in the Race of Champions, but his new career went no further than that until he was tempted back yet again to race the Beatrice Haas Lola in 1985. A great character who is still eminently quotable today.
I took my oldest son Kol on a hike to Horton Springs last weekend. What a treat it was to play in the cool water and find gazillions of bugs and butterflies everywhere. The four mile hike was hot going uphill, especially with the camera pack/tripod on my back, but we were rewarded at the top of the trail with cool, clean water to drink as it spouted right out of the earth. We were also treated to cool showers and rumbling thunderclaps all the way back down the trail. Of course, as luck would have it a few of the shots I had hoped to make on the return trip were rained out, but I'm going to assume that's just the universe telling me I need to return soon and try again.

There's a sketchy little alleyway that runs between our apartment complex and the small area of South Lake Union that has yet to be gentrified. It's full of graffiti - this particular "nugget" being my favorite, not just because the artist used the word "turd," but because he or she added an apostrophe to the word "nuggets." Thoughts on non-verbal communication
It is thought that non-verbal communication makes up around two thirds of the information that people exchange and this is made up of both body movement and facial expression. Some movements even come with their own specific meanings, these are known as “quotable gestures” such as a shrug when somebody doesn’t understand something other motions that accompany words such as pointing when referring to an object or direction are known as “speech related gestures”. Tension throughout the body also can be very descriptive with tense poses often indicating negative emotions and relaxed poses indicating positive emotions, a good example of this is the slight tilting of the head when feeling positive or relaxed where exposing the neck suggests a person feels under no threat of attack. Also involuntary eye movement plays a large part in human communication such as looking up and to the left which is an indication of visually constructed thought which is often linked to the act of lying as an individual invents something to say. The eyes can be very expressive such as attraction causing the pupil to dilate, Charles Darwin even refers to a “brightening of the eyes”* and goes into some length into animal interaction also and how they in term display expression to each other.

The FH Series, is a series of heavy trucks, first introduced by Volvo in 1993 which has remained in production through several generation changes and updates. The FH range is one of the most successful truck series ever having sold more than 400,000 units worldwide
First unveiled in September 1993 as a replacement for the F Series as the FH12 and FH16. FH stands for Forward control High entry, where numbers denominate engine capacity in litres. which shared common cabs. The FH12 won Truck of the Year award in 1994
The third generation FH was launched in 2012 with major technology upgrades, and a new design. The company also introduced the first of its Euro VI engines, the D13K which became compulsory for new trucks from 2014. Other quotable new features are the I-torque driveline and the I-see fuel-saving technology. Volvo Trucks has demonstrated the new Autonomous Emergency Braking system that combines radar and a camera that works together to identify and monitor vehicles in front. The system is designed to deal with both stationary and moving vehicles and can prevent a collision with a moving target at relative speeds of up to 70 km/h. To help me study, I went on the net and searched the P2Ps for Oscar Wilde, in case there was a reading or performance of one of his works I could download (I dont use that sort of thing these days, mind you). Nothing much came up except for something by a Morrissey. I downloaded it, and there was a smooth voiced man speaking passionately on it about how incredibly quotable Oscar Wilde is, and how he thought that the upcoming Importance of Being Earnest Film was hopefully going to be really big. At the end of the track, there was a snippet of a song sung by Morrissey, singing his heart out. I found out much later the track was Alma Matters, a kind of an appropriate song lyrically for the last year of high school. At the time, I had no idea, but I wanted to hear more, so I ended up getting a couple of compilations, one from his old band The Smiths, and the other from his solo career. Catchy tunes, witty lyrics, great voice, I quickly became a fan.A lot of rock listeners prefer The Smiths to Morrisseys solo stuff. Though the quantity of classic tracks is a fair bit higher of a Smiths record than a Morrissey solo CD, I do prefer a good Morrissey solo song to a good Smiths one. The production is brighter, playful and colorful. The band toys with a lot more styles than The Smiths did. Morrissey sounds more like himself too, free to explore his interests more fully in his lyrics, be they the romance of crime, boxing matches, or the music industry, along with his usual themes of unrequited love, boredom and the struggles of youth. Its a little deeper in its Britishness that the Smiths too (if that makes sense). Hes a brilliant lyricist, and in this part of his career its just as good as it was when he started.If youre getting into Morrissey, Ive got to warn you. Choose the compilation you get carefully. If you like what you hear and want to get more, you will end up with overlap, as Morrissey has rereleased and repackaged his songs in so many different ways. For that reason, I prefer the Suedehead compilation, as there are rare tracks there you wont find on any other full length CD. I would have preferred the B-side I Can Have Both (one of my favorites, and one Morrissey used to do live often), but Lost has grown on me. Its a mid-tempo song with lush production about a skywriter, a pilot of one of those planes that writes things with the smoke. Its well sung, and has some touching lyrics. Everybodys lost, but pretending they are not. I know what he means...This compilation comes with a nice thick booklet, which I always like. It contains full lyrics, a few pictures of Morrissey, a lengthy foreword of sorts by Michael Bracewell, speaking very highly of the music and its singer. I think he overanalyses a bit in it, but no matter. Where each song charted in both the UK and US is also listed, which is interesting. (Lost peaked at #671 in the UK. Hehe!). I also just notice that Morrissey himself recommends some albums for the listener to check out in the back page of the booklet. (Jobriath, Phil Ochs, The Ramones, Nancy Sinatra and Burt Bacharach). Interesting choices...If youre looking for a one disc overview of Morrissey, this is probably the best one to get. If you think you may become a fan, (and if you like this, you probably will do) you might want to pick up another compilation (like Bona Drag or Suedehead) to avoid a bit of overlap later. how tall do you think i am? i have always been of the opinion that i'm of fairly normal proportion, making judging my height fairly difficult. while we're on the subject, how old do you think i am?
this last question is one i have to struggle with most days. do i want to appear older than i am to imply extra wisdom within my profession, or do i want to appear young and fresh faced and keen and eager? will my younger patients think me an old fart if they don't know how old i am, or will the grandparents decide i'm too young to understand their concerns?
