David John Quirk.

Born in Douglas in Coronation Year 1953 he was educated at Willaston and Murray’s Road Schools before going on to Douglas High School for Boys. After leaving school he became apprenticed as a plumbing and heating engineer with the Douglas Gas Light Company. After completing his apprenticeship he worked for Quiggin and Cubbon Ltd and then Douglas Plumbing and Heating Company before taking up employment with Douglas Corporation. He was elected to the Board of Onchan District Commissioners in May 1990 and became Chairman on the resignation of Mr Payne in March 1996 and in May was elected by his fellow members to serve a further year in that office. He was a member of the Employees side of the Buildings Trades Council and served on the Social Security Appeals Tribunal. He was also an Employer’s Representative on Whitley Council and Chairman of the Building and Construction Branch of the Transport and General Workers Union. He is a member of the Friends of Onchan’s Heritage, a past Chairman of the Society for the Preservation of the Manx Countryside and Environment and currently Chairman of the Onchan Pensioners’ Club and the Onchan Silver Band (from2002). He was awarded the Crosh Pobble Chonnaghyn (the Onchan Community Cross) in 2002. He was elected as Chairman of the Commissioners for a second term of office in May 2001.

Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva spent the long Memorial Day Weekend promoting her proposed Assembly Bill 1453, which will direct the Department of Veterans Affairs to apply to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs State Cemetery Grant Program for the construction of a Southern California Veterans Cemetery in Orange County.

Spano, the 2nd Infantry Division command sergeant major and his wife, Mare Contrare joined Command Sgt. Maj. Patrick M. Quirk, senior enlisted adviser for U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I in preparing, serving and even marketing the event to Soldiers, civilians and families.

C17 N° 994 and RM 1901 Borallon – 26.2.69 RM1901 working 378Up has arrived at Borallon to cross C17 N° 994 with 387Down goods on 26th February 1969. Safeworking duties have been completed and the rail motor with travel to Fernvale with the Staff while a Train Ticket has been completed authorising 387 to proceed to Wulkuraka. At 5.20pm, it’s time to go and the crew reboard their engine for the final leg of the journey to Ipswich.

The last rays of the afternoon sun catch C17 N°996 as it accelerates 361Dn out of the last of a series of 5 chain radius curves at Vernor on 6th September 1969

My grandfather was in this unit in WW1. This is just prior to being transported overseas. His group left England for France. When they landed in France he was diagnosed with measles and sent back to a hospital in England. While recovering his whole unit was wiped out by a gas attack. Most of the men in this photo were killed before he made it back to the front lines.

B15 Con N°290 on Rockhampton Coal Stage 14.9.67 B15 Con N°290 charges up Rockhampton Coal Stage with four hoppers on 14th September 1967. The engine has been spruced up to haul a train to Westwood celebrating the centenary of the opening of the Central Railway. This was the last engine of the class in service and was written off in May the following year. She is now stored at Ipswich Workshops. The horizontal line on the VJM hoppers indicates that they are fitted with Grade Control Valves for use on Callide Valley coal trains.

B18¼ Nº 830 has just been re-coaled after arriving at Mackay with 37Down overnight mixed train from Rockhampton on 12th September 1967

On Saturday morning after having arrived from Ipswich on 376Up, the fire is being dumped from C17 N°994. Soon after the engine will set back to join two other members of the class until the following Monday when it will return to Ipswich.
