made a quick pasta dish for supper tonight - these are my favourite!
1. cook pasta
2. add broccoli (both florets and peeled and sliced stems) a few minutes before pasta is done
3. meanwhile, saute half a medium yellow onion, sliced, and 2 large garlic cloves, chopped in plenty of olive oil until soft
4. slice roasted red peppers (out of a jar, reserving liquid) - approx 1.5 peppers (some were used for another dish earlier this week)
5. chop jarred artichoke hearts (also reserving liquid)
6. drain pasta & broccoli, returning to pot
7. add onions & garlic, peppers & artichoke
8. add a couple of tablespoons of both reserved liquids, some olive oil, lemon juice, white wine vinegar, salt & pepper to taste
9. add 5-6 sprigs of fresh thyme (leaves only)

Lastolite 8 in 1 held by my to camera left and angled up to provide a little fill from the ceiling bounce, sunfire surface used to warm the face.

I used turkey pepperoni instead of regular so it was a bit healthier and just as tasty!

Whipped this bad boy together for my buddy Ben's gathering. Reacting to the budget ($0) I initially refused. Alas, those Harvard English guys really have a way with words, and I was quickly convinced.

I made a big circle up past the old Lathrop Homes and through the reconstructed Damen-Elston-Fullerton instersection, and I thought about posting some of those pictures, but none of them interested me. So here's a picture looking southeast down Elston from a curve in the road that didn't used to be here.
Elston is a diagonal street running through what was mostly an industrial corridor when I moved to Chicago, and it still bears that look along much of its length. It used to be a nice bicycle route because nobody took it. There were few bikes, and car traffic was pretty light by Chicago standards. But then the city started mucking with it a decade or so ago, and it became a lot more annoying. It also got a lot busier, as the new bike lanes seemed to attract a lot more car traffic, and what had been a fairly quick, low-stress route turned into yet another Chicago mess. Traffic seems light in this picture, which was taken around 3 pm on a week day. Give it an hour.
The industrial properties are fading away a little at a time, and the gentrifiers are trying to figure out how to make money off the empty lots. They haven't quite worked that out yet, but the street from here toward downtown has been changing in subtle ways for years. There's a big, empty patch of land not far east of here, though, that used to be a steel plant and is now a really big patch of empty concrete, and I suspect once the city works out what's going to happen there, Elston will change dramatically. Urbanist types I follow on the internet envision all sorts of new, dense urban living. I suspect Elston's ultimate fate is to be lined with dealerships for expensive cars and upscale strip malls.
