Question for you east coasters: how do you know when a pond is frozen enough that it’s safe to walk on? I would be constantly afraid of falling through the ice. I guess at the public garden you at least know it’s shallow enough that if you fell thru you wouldn’t die, just ruin your day. But I’ve seen pics of people out walking on some of the natural deep ponds recently. How do you know it’s safe? I’ve read too many stories of people falling thru and coming up under the frozen ice not able to get to the air... I didn’t grow up around natural ice and it just seems way too scary. Anyway, this is an iPhone X shot from the public garden today.
and we'll, sing it back to you. we could sing our own, but what would it, be without you?
the following is my entry for a competition at the morris museum we're doing in lit. it's inspired by a painting.
“Do you think this tie suitable?” the old man asked, his cerulean eyes fixed in gentle understanding, slightly oversized ears hearing something in the following silence. After just a moment he gave a quaint smile to the object below him, nodding his head and chuckling emptily, “yes, I did think you would. The maroon matches so nicely with you.” He ended his sentence as though it were a question, turning away from the polka dotted maroon loveseat and entering the dingy building behind him with some sort of sad agreement.
Speaking as though not just to himself, the old man continued, “I rather like cloudy days. Everything feels so clear without the sun,” he laughed, “speaking of those, Roger has said he would come visit the store this morning. That’s the cause for the tie.”
Clearing his throat nervously as if second-guessing the tie, the man began his daily routine, which was today accelerated in order to make a nice impression upon this visitor. He hobbled around the store swiftly as his rheumatoid arthritis would allow, smiling halfheartedly with an honestly worried look about his face. His anxiety was visibly rising with the sun, and he made nearly continual glances out of the murky shop window towards the loveseat, as if just to make sure it was still there. He moved the delicate, dusky objects within the shop as if to reorganize his mind, as well.
After a few hours of feeble attempts at work and understated chaos, an attractive, middle-aged man arrived at the door with a black briefcase. He had a serious look about his face, with a consciously furrowed brow and a slight frown of anticipation, yet he approached the old man in the shop with a sudden smile. The old man returned the gesture and gave the visitor a weak pat on the shoulder.
“Nice to see you, Roger, nice to see you. How are things at the firm?”
“Fair, I’d say, after this case we had last week – repetitive theft and larceny, crook got away clean. I suppose it was mostly my newest hire, man from Darlington. Quite a turnout, quite a turnout, indeed,” replied Roger.
There was a blaring silence as the old man returned from his mysterious distraction.
“Lovely to hear that, lovely,” he muttered in a blank monotone, looking significantly more anxious. He made a sideways glance out of the window and muttered some sort of plea under his breath in pining as the attorney sat down in a creaky chair.
The furrowed brow of the sitting man returned as he looked around the dirty shop.
“Listen,” he said, opening his black briefcase, “that isn’t what I came to talk about. I know it’s been difficult. None of us are immune to that.”
The old man stared out the window as his breathing accelerated. He interrupted the defined lines of his face with a heavy blink and stayed perfectly still, rooted to the spot. The attorney sighed in frustration and fumbled through his briefcase until he found a glossy booklet. He stared at it for a fleeting moment and sighed again deeply.
“Dad,” the man continued, “I know what this shop is to you. It’s been in the family for years – but just look around. Look what you’re living in. This is getting dreadfully out of hand.”
Roger stopped, aggravated by his father’s seeming indifference and lack of cooperation. He locked the shiny buckles of his briefcase and stood up as the chair creaked in protest beneath him. His brow furrowed impossibly further, and he cleared his throat with determination.
“Look. I know you don’t want to do this, but bottom line, you can’t handle living here anymore. I’ve found a nice place at the edge of town. It’s called Brookhaven. They’ll be coming soon. I know it’s going to be difficult for you to leave, but ever since Mum died…”
The old man burst from his silence in a hysterical high-pitched wail and cradled his head in his hands. He began hobbling towards the open door, towards the polka-dotted maroon loveseat, where it was two summers ago and everything was as it should still be.
Before his knees could allow the old man to reach the door, the attorney took his arms behind his back and held him still. His son was shorter but much stronger than he, and the old man continued to scream and struggle in the attorney’s grip. After what seemed like an eternity the old man was partially released as Roger voiced,
“Now, you’re going to stay still. They’ll be here any minute now, and I’ll go with you to help get your things situated. Don’t try to run off.”
Nearly as he finished his sentence an old tan station wagon pulled up on the curb. A plump woman in scrubs with even plumper hair and plum lips opened the passenger door and walked around the front of the car towards the old man and his son. She nodded briefly at Roger and then turned to the old man with an overly sweet smile and degrading stare. He was still visibly upset, but obviously put off by the woman’s bigotry.
“It’s nice to meet you,” she articulated towards the old man, “we’ve got all of your things nice and ready to go.”
After few more indistinguishable words she pseudosmiled again and took the old man’s arm vigorously and guided him into the car. His face expressed insane defiance, but his body had somehow surrendered to this inconsiderate torture. He climbed into the backseat of the station wagon and stared out of its window, one which was familiarly filthy, like the one in the front of his store. He began to bang on the window, wailing and crying again like an infant, staring at the polka-dotted maroon loveseat.
No, they had not gotten all of his things./b>
So I have a lot of extra Lego Squad-related pics that either didn't turn out how I wanted, just weren't the ones I chose to post, or have older versions of figs in them.
Because of this I've been thinking of opening a second account just for those so they don't have to clutter up this account.
What do you guys think? would you want to see some extra stuff, or are you sick of the Squad? Let me know down below!
Humanity is extinct. Bands of nomadic robots roam the wastelands of Earth, astride their dinosaur steeds. Dinosaurs have returned, because they are awesome, don't question it.
"Their common name refers to a distinctive silver mark on the hindwing." Can't see it here, unfortunately.. Proboscis in the sand?
Early marriage is a tradition of our very defensive religious society. It's like a curse to that girl who actually not ready to get married both mentally and physically .
So questions throws to the society How long they have to carry the burden of the early marriage
I was nominated .
Number TWO.
The world seen through my eyes, was the 'challenge'.
It posed serious questions. How do I see the world?
Despite everything… I still see the world in a positive light (LOL, old, photographer’s joke?), really, I see so much beauty, in Nature, in people, in manmade objects.
And THAT is what I try to capture, each and every day.
here are certainties and fixed values… every day there is a sunrise, every day there is a sunset.
The seasons follow nicely with their different moods and colours. Aah, there it is: THE WORD: COLOURS.
Yes I see the world in technicolour, tie that in with emotion, sometimes humour and we’re all there: my world.
ART by CHANCE…
This was taken from the car as we came back from France, the sun was going down fast above Flanders' fields, it was beautiful, I chanced it...
I do not often use the word art , but this?
I think it is special, the church just sharp, so typically Flanders. It's rapidly becoming a personal favourite!
...At 70 miles/hour, there's bound to be something in your shot, or when the fraction in time and space is just perfect, yes, you guessed it, a bump or a pothole, grrr... only another type of frustration? Hihi...

William’s Practice involves beading everyday objects. With this work, he explores the ideas around trespassing as he subtly critiques rights of land. These camping chairs – created by many hands and thousands of glass beads – are set on river rocks that acknowledge the waterways and shorelines that run through Turtle Island. He raises the questions: “Who is claiming ownership of these lands?”
Taken on Granville Island, Vancouver, BC.

Hope everyone is well...I have been pretty busy lately trying to get into thesis-writing. My creative energy has been focused in a different area lately, and so I'm finding it hard to get out and shoot. But I am making progress on my thesis...so I guess its a good thing for now!
should i do a 365 thing, guys?
i've kindof been thinking about it lately, but i have some reservations. i already have well over 365 pictures of myself, so i'm not sure what i'd need more for, so i'm just thinking about it, and i'd like your opinions, if you have any.
i'm not sure i'd have the time to keep up with it, but i'm looking for something to challenge myself with this year. i know taking self-portraits isn't that hard for me, so i'm wondering if there's a way i could make it more interesting.
i could do 365 pictures of not-myself, but i'm sure a lot of these will be done in my house when i get home from school/work late at night, so taking pictures of objects around my house might get old. plus, there's usually more options for pictures with people in them.
or i could do 365 not-photoshopped pictures, but i <3 photoshop lots and i don't feel like it's that much of a crutch for me (though i assume lots of people might think otherwise). plus the whole bragging about "sooc" is kindof lame, ngl.
i could also try to write a small something to go along with each picture.
so i don't know.
also, where would i post them? on this flickr, i imagine, but then where would i post pictures that were not-365 related?
i know it's generally better to post as little as possible each day and not bombard flickr, but that's difficult enough for me as it is. i could make another flickr for a 365, i guess.
so, yeah, what do you guys think (assuming anyone cares)? any ideas to how i could liven up a 365 project? how do you guys approach it, if you do at all? what are your reasons for doing it? do you think it's kindof a boring/generic thing to do? if i were to do one, do you think i should post it here, or make a new, 365-exclusive flickr/tumblr/something else? i would like to know your thoughts on anything, if you wouldn't mind telling me. :]
(for the record this picture is a few weeks old, not the beginning of a 365.)
Excited to share that my Girl in Van will appear in Eyeshot Street Photography's WATCHED -Street Photography Under the Gaze (#22), their latest limited-edition book exploring the idea of being seen.
“To curate it, we read sixty street photographs as if they were answers to a question the city keeps asking us before we ask it. The selection does not search for a single look, but it rather collects the act of looking across cities, devices, distances, and surfaces, and lets a slow image of public space emerge from the differences between them.
Each frame is one shape of a condition we already know: presence is exposed. “

As a B&B host (not an Air BnB Superhost! no thanks) I get asked many questions: where to go, what to see, what's the weather going to do today, etc? Fortunately, having an interest in photography has helped me in that, as I regularly recce the area to check roads, where deer are, highland coos, etc, and taste the local whisky so that I know!
Sometimes I'm powerless to help. When people (French) travel from the south of France to the Scottish Highlands and then decide it's too far to go 25 miles to explore the end of the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Or they only bring white trainers and no walking boots with them as if expecting to only walk on city pavements and not across unspoilt and rugged Mother Nature. I despair sometimes with the lack of 'nous' or planning. Of course they also expect to get up late and then set off for a day trip of all of Skye....and haven't even thought to book a ferry in peak season.
Some, a few, arrive better prepared, some with teenage kids more interested in staying in the room and playing Call of Duty on the Playstation. To them, I might say, why not go far off the beaten trail out to Glendrian?
Your kids can get some lungfulls of pure, fresh highland air, some exercise and some education (why do people come here with big plastic bottles of Highland Spring water bottled from some drain near the Ochil Hills near Glasgow? How could it be more pure than what we have come out of the mountains around here? At least I'm reasonably confident our water hasn't already passed through several other human beings, and only filtered after flowing through the whole sewage system and chemically recycled).
Glendrian is an abandoned crofting township in the centre of the Ardnamurchan peninsula centred on grid reference NM480687. It is a Scheduled Monument, Historic Scotland describing it as “of national importance because of its potential to contribute to our understanding of post-medieval settlement and economy. Although only abandoned in the 1940s the settlement incorporates information for the earlier expansion and contraction of the community who lived here. The buildings are varied in date and style and contain evidence for the complex history of settlement on the site.”
Glendrian’s lands occupy the eastern half of the low land within the circle of hills formed by the main ring dykes of the Ardnamurchan Tertiary Volcanic Complex. Even in winter, when the vegetation has died back, the buildings are difficult to see.
But take your teenagers out there and ask them to imagine it was their home, completely isolated and cut off in the low land where there is total silence within the circle of hills formed by the main ring dykes of the Ardnamurchan Tertiary Volcanic Complex. There's no road to it. No electricity. The running water is in the form of a burn along the bottom of the shallow valley. No shops. And apart from feeding and tending to the animals kids still had to go to school in Kilchoan, six miles over the hills. And they didn't have modern water and windproof clothing to cloth them as they walked to school in winter darkness, and rain, hail and snow. And shock-horror: tell your teenagers they had no phone signal or wifi either!
People lived in Glendrian until the 1940's until the convenience of motorised transport links, shops and electricity lured them to living in towns and villages. 80 years on, if they were still alive would they move back, valuing the quality of life in Glendrian: no noise, no traffic, no crowds, no crime, no rape, no knife crime - a peaceful way of life? That's what 'civilisation' should be. Indeed the movement of people to live in towns and cities has heralded the end of civilisation! A visit to Glendrian can teach modern youth, and city and town folk a lot! I scuttled off home before the rain arrived.
A more comprehensive history of the settlement is here : heritageardnamurchan.co.uk/glendrian/

In everything we do we are challenged with the question of: Is this right? Is this good? Will this be accepted? And in all of those questions, it is easy to be tricked into thinking that the answer is what we are seeking. But I believe what the artist's soul looks for is not an answer to AM I GOOD ENOUGH, but instead a way to break the question entirely.
www.promotingpassion.com/quieting-yourself/
If I try to answer the fundamental question of "Am I good enough?", inevitably the answer is irrelevant. That the question is asked at all proves that we seek validation to what we create. In an attempt to break myself from that validation, to stop the person inside of me who would silence my more adventurous spirit, I will be creating new works. The question will not be if it is good enough, but instead, is it enough - for me.

This is the caterpillar of the Question Mark butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis). There is a tiny mark on the underside of the butterfly's wing that gives it the unusual name. I photographed this spiky creature at the Butterfly Haven in Pingree, Idaho.

After waiting over a month, mom finally got to Toronto and into the Apple Store to buy her Mac. (The shopping was part of the present.)
We booked a personal shopper, Dave, to help with the process and he was great! Totally worth calling ahead to have someone like Dave (or Dave himself) there to help you go through the purchase process and all the little questions that are sitting in the back of your mind.
(These are going to be used together in a flickr slideshow on unsweetened.ca)

At the end of the day, almost every image I create has great meaning to me. But, I’m not in this just for myself. I desire to speak for those who feel they don’t have a voice, to empower those who choose not to speak yet, and to relate to people no matter how distant or different. I am an introvert, ridden with anxiety and fairly anti-social. Art is my way of connecting. It is my way of skipping the cheap talk to get to what matters most; to have conversations with people that mean something. To look back and know that I spent my time trying. Not necessarily succeeding, but who cares about that, anyway?
My life will not be defined by if I succeeded, but by if I tried. This is me trying, reaching out to you and showing you who I am; not the more superficial version of myself that you might bump into on the street, who says “how are you” but really wants to ask “what is your passion?”, but the one who dives straight into those questions without worry.
Are you trapped?
Are you being torn apart?
Are you being held together?
Those are the questions I desire to know answers to, so this is my art, asking those questions.
“Hello Sky, I was looking for you earlier but could not find you.” Said Barnaby looking concerned.
“I have been with Ellie and have been talking to her. She doubted that I am a genius, I was shocked.”
“I can understand that Sky, every bear knows that you are a genius.” Said Barnaby. “But then she is an elephant.”
“What did she actually say then Sky?” Asked Bertie.
“She said that I could not be a genius until I had managed to answer some very difficult questions. I did ask her to tell me what they were but she refused and said she would do it later, then she immediately fell asleep.”
“Do you think you will be able to answer her difficult questions then, Sky?” Asked Posh Bear.
“I don’t know, Posh, Ellie is very clever but she does cheat at times. When we go to the moon with her, she lands on the wrong place and then because she does not know, she asks me where we are and the easiest way back home again.”
“Yes, she does that sometimes. Even the ellicopter has no idea where it is or even if it is the right way up.” Said Bertie giggling.
“Well, she is often sound asleep when we do land and we often do that backwards and downside up. I am surprised she is still allowed to fly.”
“Yes, me too.” Said Posh Bear. “You could always switch to asking her very difficult questions Sky.”
“True, but then I would need the answers and if they are very difficult, I might not know the answer.”
“Well, let me ask you a question then Sky. How many leaves are on a tree?” Said Posh Bear.
“Posh, that is a stinker of a question, I would have no idea at all.” Said Barnaby looking upwards at his friend and waiting for an answer.
“I don’t think I know Posh, more than three I would say, and sometimes they have no leaves at all, plus, I dare say it would depend on how big the tree was.” Said Sky.
“There we are then, Sky. You say you do not know but you have just given me three answers and they are all correct. It is highly probably there are more than three leaves to a tree, sometimes there are none at all when it gets cold, and as you so rightly pointed out it depends on the size of the tree.”
“Yes, I suppose so, I was rather clever, wasn’t I?” Said Sky looking surprised at himself.
“Indeed Sky, remember you should always just accept that there are some questions no bear can answer, but do not feel upset because you do not know all the answers all the time. Ellie is naughty being so mischievous and doubting you like that.”
“Yes Posh, I think you are right, Sky is still a genius, isn’t he?” Said Barnaby who never doubted his friend at all.
“Indeed, he is Barnaby. I am sure that there is no other bear that knows of more ways to acquire jars of honey when he is a touch hungry. I think even after your visit early this morning, Sky, I still have enough jars left for everyone to enjoy after the man has finished up here.”
“I am sure you have too, Posh. I have ordered extra to give you back those that I borrowed and they should be with us later today.”
“How many jars have you ordered then Sky?” Asked Posh Bear.
“Well, I am not entirely certain, my paws are much bigger than the thingies on the man’s composter that I order through, and I am not sure about numbers when they are above three, but I think there should be enough and a bit more. I aim for one of the numbers but with my paws I tend to hit several, so it will be a surprise again.” Said Sky smiling happily that the job was done.
