VA national and state Veterans cemeteries will again team with the Worcester Wreath Company, Veterans service organizations, community organizers and many others to produce the most successful “Wreaths Across America” campaign to date Dec. 12, 2009.

The grassroots effort to honor fallen veterans by placing holiday wreaths on their headstones or by holding wreath ceremonies in Veterans cemeteries and other patriotic sites has become a national phenomenon.

Wreaths Across America began in 1992 when Morrill Worcester, president of the Worcester Wreath Company, donated leftover wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery for placement on the headstones of fallen veterans. The event caught on and grew larger every year.

In 2006, state and national Veterans cemeteries, as well as private cemeteries with Veterans sections, held ceremonies of their own and Wreaths Across America was born. In 2007, 32,000 wreaths were placed in 286 VA national and state Veterans cemeteries. In 2008, volunteers placed 105,000 wreaths in 354 cemeteries. This year we anticipate an even larger Wreaths Across America campaign.

The size of the ceremonies ranged from very large (5,000 people at Houston National Cemetery in Texas) to very small (24 people who braved icy road conditions to lay wreaths at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y.) Young people support the events in significant ways through organizations like the Civil Air Patrol, which played a major role in organizing ceremonies around the country.

Wreaths Across America, designed to “remember, honor and teach,” also reaches a wide audience through the media. Last year, television and newspaper outlets across the nation produced hundreds of feature stories on the wreath laying events.

There were heartwarming stories, like that of 6-year-old Alex DeMasi from Humble, Texas, who asked his father why wreaths were laid in honor of veterans at Arlington National Cemetery but not at nearby Houston National Cemetery. That simple question from a young boy caused quick action by local citizens and resulted in 14,000 wreaths being placed at Houston National Cemetery in 2008.

From modest beginnings, Wreaths Across America has developed into a dynamic opportunity to remember our nation’s veterans. With the full support and encouragement of VA, momentum is increasing in 2009. You can participate in Wreaths Across America at your local VA national cemetery on Saturday, Decemeber 12th.

For more information and a listing of participating VA national cemeteries and ceremony times visit the Wreaths Across America Web site at www.wreaths-across-america.org.

March 10:Question Mark

Jefferson County, Missouri; March; 2009.

The tag consists of Hebrew letters spelling the word "Bright." Bright because my name is Gaelic and it is a huge part of who I am. My name is what makes me unique. I used to hate being questioned over and over again on the pronunciation and origin and as a shy child I hated being put in the spotlight. But now I appreciate how it makes me different and it has a special meaning to me now as I grow into the name and it's meaning. When I was young, my parents often told me of the Goddess in Irish mythology, Niamh. She was the queen of Tír na nÃg, the land of eternal youth. She was the lover of the poet-hero Oisín, the story is actually quite sad but compelling. It is given in the explanation of another picture on the sight since it is relevant to the picture's meaning. I strive to be thought of as a bright person, meaning kind and energetic, therefore the lettering represents me. I chose Hebrew for two reasons, the first being I grew up in a strict Irish Catholic home. Both my parents were born and raised in Irish Catholic homes as well, my mother even more so since she went to boarding school in a convent run by nuns. Church every Sunday and prayers every night were a natural part of my childhood and define me as a person as well. The second reason being my first real relationship was with a boy who had a tattoo on his arm in Hebrew lettering. The tattoo spelt the word "Spirit" I learnt a lot about myself in that relationship and had some experiences that shaped me into the person I am today. The lettering is against a horse's silhouette. The most obvious reason for this is because horses are possibly the most important thing in my life. I love all animals in general but horses in particular. I have been riding from a young age, no one pushed me to do it, I simply did it out of love for these beautiful animals and soon learned to live horse riding as a sport and continue to ride and work at my barn today. Secondly the horse is a symbol for freedom, a horse is free - something I want to be and something I think everyone should be able to be.

The tag is printed on a background of a girl enjoying the water throwing it up in joy. I thought it would be appropriate simply because I can see myself doing it as I have many times and because of the joy and freedom the picture represents.

Am I a set? (town and country?)

I find these go well together. The Yellow is much softer then the yellow from the primary fridgie set.

Attached please find a photo for the Spotlight Volunteer winner for the AVC

page. Questions and responses for the article are below. Her name is

Jennifer Koepl, she volunteers as the Bravo FRG Leader.

1. Where do you volunteer? I volunteer with Bravo Company, 3-1 STB 1AD

2. What inspires you to volunteer? The military community is a great one

and it makes me feel good to give back to our service men and women.

3. How long have you been a volunteer? With this position, only a few

months, but volunteering has been a big part of my life for several years.

4. Do you encourage others to volunteer? Why? Yes I do encourage others

to volunteer. It is important to get out there and give back. The work does

not go unnoticed and everyone appreciates the hard work we do to get the job

done.

5. What is your overall perspective on volunteerism? My perspective on

volunteerism is that you get out of it what you put in it, especially with

the FRGs. It takes a lot of work, but it is worth every bit of it. Plus, my

kids see me volunteer and I hope that

they will see that it is a good thing to do when they are old enough to

volunteer.

Please let me know if you need any further information from me.

Thanks!
