NATIONAL VINYL RECORD DAY
The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Monkees. Does the mention of these musicians make you picture a round black record? A vinyl record? The vintage vinyl is almost as much of a classic as the bands themselves.
These vinyl records are commemorated annually on August 12. Vinyl records are also known as a gramophone record, phonograph record or a record. It is an analog sound storage medium consisting of a flat disc which has an inscribed, modulated spiral groove.

Other features of vinyl records included reproductive accuracy or “fidelity” (High Fidelity or Hi-Fi, Orthophonic and Full-Range), their time capacity (long playing or single), and the number of channels of audio provided (mono, stereo or quadraphonic).
Vinyl records were also sold in different sizes such as:

1 good time!
Since this exercise will only get more difficult as years go by, I don’t know if my treasure hunt tactic will still work. I have one possible theme idea for next year, but it’s a secret.
A TEAC A-3340S 4-channel tape deck's quartet of VU meters, output selectors, and record indicator lights.
This deck was introduced during the 1970s quadraphonic sound fad, the main giveaway in this picture being the Front and Rear labeling of the output (or monitoring) switches. During that era, tape (both reel-to-reel and, yes, the lowly eight-track cartridge) was the only way to get four discrete (independent) channels from any format. The humble LP phonograph record wasn't so lucky; read the Wikipedia article I linked above to marvel (?) at the variety of competing standards (most with the letter Q in their acronyms) and you'll see why the quadraphonic concept did not last long, although multichannel sound in the home would make a successful return decades later.
Machines like this one were also a home music producer's favorite, until recorders with eight or more tracks and, ultimately, versatile digital options took over. Companies catering to enthusiasts and audiophiles still make tape to satisfy those keeping old recorders alive in the quest to preserve that classic analog sound.

I got my kids a lot of music and recording equipment this christmas. Some package deals included cheap microphone stands - which are kind of OK for light use but not strong enough for my two singers many annual performances. So I ordered the these K&M mic stands..... and they are sturdy. Sure they cost 5 times more but last forever and are not annoyingly crappy.
Next I need to save up to get Elichrom light modifiers instead of the semi-crappy ones (which work fine lighting - wise) that I use now.

A legendary 4 channel (quadraphonic) receiver built by Pioneer. Two top models were available, the QX-949 and this QX-747. The performance is quite strong with 4x35 watts. Multi-channel decoder for all methods, such as CD-4, SQ and matrix are on board.
The receiver reaches a width of 55cm a good format on the furniture. The weight with almost 20kg already required at the time a trained back. Three pairs of speakers can be used. That should be enough for each vintage friend.

Circle Totem - Olivier Clausse
A suspended moment for gathering and sharing.
Circle Totem is a poetic, slow and narrative installation. The totem can be appreciated in its own right but also in a broader context. It is, in fact, a suspended moment conducive to gathering and sharing. This artistic proposal aims to re-establish links. First of all, the link with time, by inviting you to contemplate, stop and observe. But also the link with constant rediscovery through the play of lights, colours and intensities. The totems are animated independently and the pool of water at the base of each structure reflects the light and allows for multiple points of view.
Through his unique view of light, Olivier Clausse describes himself as a creative worker and scenographer who constantly sharpens his relationship with the object. Backed by twenty-six years of experience in the performing arts, cinema and crafts, he has forged his own personality. Together with the Afro-American choreographer Nora Chipaumire, he has established himself as an international lighting designer. His minimalist stage designs and raw lighting were praised in 2012 by the New York Times for the piece 'Miriam' performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Olivier Clausse has multiplied his projects in theatre and music, notably with the quadraphonic concert 'La Colonie de Vacances' and 8 years of tours across France.

Santana is the debut studio album by Latin rock band Santana released in 1969. Over half of the album's length is composed of instrumental music, recorded by what was originally a purely free-form jam band. At the suggestion of manager Bill Graham, the band took to writing more conventional songs for more impact, but managed to retain the essence of improvisation in the music.
The album was destined to be a major release, given a headstart by the band's seminal performance at the Woodstock Festival earlier that August. Although "Jingo" was not very successful (only reaching #56), "Evil Ways", the second single taken from the album, was a U.S. Top 10 hit. The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 pop album chart and #26 on the UK Albums Chart. It has been mixed and released in both stereo and quadraphonic.

"Route of the 400s"
I remember it was cold---quite cold, indeed; kind of like stomping your feet and complaining about it cold. We had just finished an extraordinary meal at the old Paradise Restaurant & Lounge (now closed) in Elmhurst, Illinois on February 8, 1988. All the while we were there, a near constant stream of commuter trains and freights were rolling outside just across the street. This was Chicago & Northwestern's main line west just out of Proviso Yard, and the trains paraded by the big picture window on the front of the eatery. With the tab paid, I grabbed my Nikon as the rumble of another westbound freight could be heard. I dodged traffic, hustled across the street, and framed a few images, including this last one of the sequence (the others mere medium tele views). GP50 No. 5070 was on the point, followed by a Conrail unit and two more C&NW EMDs. The green and yellow/gold paint--though a little worn--looked great in the low western light reflecting off the nose and sides. This was just one reason I had again come to Chicago. For railroad action, this was the epicenter. Soon enough, the Northwestern would be gobbled up and digested by Union Pacific, but for now, another soon to be "fallen flag" was in 3D, quadraphonic sound, Technicolor, and smell-a-vision for my full sensory enjoyment. Not a "400" (or a UP "City" streamliner before they jumped to the Milwaukee Road to reach Chicago), but good enough for a frigid day at Elmhurst.

In early seventies the JVC-V700 FM/AM stereo preferred to complement existing quadraphonic systems on the market.
The 2-channel tuner was prepared with an integrated 4-channel function. The device equipped with FETs has fine good receiving properties and sounds good with every amplifier.
The matching 4-channel JVC amplifier 4VN-880 is also presented in my collection here.
Both nice JVC hifi classics are rarely seen today.

After the Marantz Model 4400 it is the largest of the 70s quadraphonic receiver series from Marantz. A very massive constructure was the feature of the successful and expensive series. The four channel options are comprehensive, all decoders are on board.
The 4300 works and sounds after a small balance as on the first day.
The receiver is heavy at 22kg with unusually large dimensions. The FM reception is perfect and the amplifier power of 170 watts pc in stereo operation is incredible.
In quadro operation it still drives 64 watts per channel.
Now I got the original wooden cabinet.

High-end quadraphonic amplifier from early seventies.
An impressive piece of HiFi development by JVC in the field of multi-channel technology. The performance 4x25 watts or 2x40 watts stereo was the time correspondingly excellent.
All 4 channels are individually controllable and can be made visible via four VU meters. Low cut and high cut filters are on board. Particularly helpful is the 3-step selectable impedance for the phono input. 4 separate power amplifiers can be connected.

The Marantz 4230 is created for stereo and 4 channel (Quadraphonic) sources. Marantz called the concept sonorous "Stereo 2 + Quadradial 4". Some quadro decoder systems are on board. For an optional SQ decoder, there is a recess in the base plate, it can simply docked.
The rated output of 2x40 watts or 4x17 watts was always outbid in tests thanks to the Marantz typical transformer dimension. For the good FM reception with the possibility of multipath signal evaluation is a high quality FM front end module responsible.
The versatile enabled receiver 4240 from the legendary first 70 series is true fun and gives an entirely sophisticated impression. It sounds like it's visual impression - great!

A large Kenwood quadro of the Two-Four series from the early seventies. It is in very good technical and optical condition. I like the elegant wooden cheeks on the left and right side.
25 Watt x4, 60 Watt x2
The function label on the solid aluminum front panel is engraved. No writing imprints may be lost. An impressive device from the golden age of hifi 70s.

I have a couple of these Realistic Quatravox units from the 1970s on my strero systems. They convert two-channel stereo into four-channel for a surround sound effect. When these units were out quadraphonic sound was the latest fad, Radio Shack marketed these as a low cost alternative to get into four-channel sound. They require no external power, just a simple circuit with switches and resistors.

He's got more channels
So hologramic, oh my TVC one five

She saw my TVC one five, baby's gone, she
She crawled right in, oh my, she crawled right in my
So hologramic, oh my TVC one five

A large Kenwood quadro of the Two-Four series from the early seventies. It is in very good technical and optical condition. I like the elegant wooden cheeks on the left and right side.
25 Watt x4, 60 Watt x2
The function label on the solid aluminum front panel is engraved. No writing imprints may be lost. An impressive device from the golden age of hifi 70s. All functions are checked again and runs like the first day. Unfortunately, there is from the Kenwood series in autonomous design not many more from the series today in daily use.

I still hope to get an original wood case.

Sansui's biggest quadro and one of the most powerful quadro's ever made. This unit is in excellent condition und fully serviced. Sounds like a beast. Finest tuning section.

Taken in State College, Pennsylvania. That's my 1979 Caddy Coupe de Ville. It had a Quadraphonic 8 Track Tape sound system and a factory CB radio----LOL!! I was still wearing Dr Scholl's sandals regularly as you can see from the photo. Nikon FM taken June 1986. [For you car guys---it had a 425 4 bbl.]

The video I stood there recording fir over seven minutes I think ....was this storm ....it came in with huge gusts of wind as I was closing doors and such, saw the trees swaying from the northwest, whipping back and forth.....glad I had those trees trimmed beforehand.....and I grabbed my iPhone to stand beneath the eave camera held high to allow the deck eyebrow to shield the camera eye. Not huge lightning strikes, nothing loud, but rolling thunder after strobe light flashes in the sky. Love a good storm. This one was reminiscent of the music recorded in the 1950s by Mystic Moods Orchestra, over the very lush sounds of a thunderstorm.. Quadraphonic Sound, I think it was on LP records. Very much mood music. I thought of that music as I filmed. Too bad it is too long to upload to Flickr. But, I will run it again shortly. Meanwhile, outside, beyond my closed doors, the rain pulses against the house, the windows. Darkness is falling. And another warning is up, of Flash Flooding in the area. It will ease into a slow steady rain all night. Perfect way to break a heat spell.
