In climbing terms, a 'friend' is a spring-loaded camming device (SLCD) used for protection in rock climbing. PULLING on a 'trigger' (small handle) with the fingers retracts the cams so the device can be PUSHED into a crack; releasing the handle allows the cams to expand inside the crack. The device is then attached to the climbing rope. If the lead climber falls, the PULL on the device will result in a (properly placed) SLCD to convert the PULLING force into pressure on the rock, preventing the removal of the device and thus (hopefully) preventing a climber from hitting the ground.
For Macro Mondays theme 'PushPull'. I didn't think I would post a shot for this theme, but you can blame my husband for coming up with the pun - and then I couldn't resist for all you fans of Brian. This is indeed an old friend as it hasn't been used in quite a number of years.
No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.
