About WAM 4 Locomotive : The WAM 4 is a very successful class of 4850 HP & 25 KV AC electric locomotives used in India. The first member of the class was indigenous designed and built by CLW in 1970. The class was produced until 1983. The locomotives in the class feature rheostatic braking, and MU capability. Being designed specially for mixed traffic, the WAM 4 class has rendered excellent service. Now, most of these are used exclusively for passenger traffic. The WAM 4 loco is still among the most heavily used electric locos of IR. A single WAM 4 can generally haul up to a 24 coach passenger rake. The WAM 4 has six traction motors, and originally they were wired to be available in different configurations at different power settings. At notches up to 14, all motors were in series (at notch 14 all resistors dropping out), up to notch 21 in series parallel combinations (three pairs of motors in series, the pairs themselves being in parallel), and further notches with all motors in parallel (at notch 30 all motors are in parallel with resistors dropping out). With increasing use of the WAM 4 locos for passenger traffic the all parallel configuration was deemed more desirable since it allowed higher speeds and higher acceleration. Most of the WAM 4 locos now have their MU capability disabled as RDSO disapproves of these locos running MU'ed over 100 km/h !

Till date Tatanagar (TATA) Electric Loco Shed of South Eastern Railway has maintained its all WAM 4s' in best condition ! This locomotive is fairly fit for high speed run !

I went to a remote village of Purulia where a couple of families earn their livelihoods by making earthen pots. They use a traditional old techniques using a hand-run wheel, put the clay in the center, run it, and create a form using hands. I spent an hour observing their wonderful manual skill in forming different pots having a wide range of form and size. I was amazed by the fact that how fast they were creating with so much precision.

There is something unknown. There is something unspoken. There is something in darkness. Something I can never quite put words to. Just I carry its beauty in my mind. – I had witnessed this tranquillity at Baranti Purulia.

It was April of 1985, my first trip back to my ancestral village in India after coming to Canada for grad studies, two years earlier. I had with me my new Nikon FE2 camera with a Vivitar 75-205mm zoom lens and a few rolls of Kodachrome films. While walking around the village with my camera and looking for suitable subjects I came across this mother dog nursing a trio of orphaned piglets. Apparently the dog had her own cubs but her heart was big enough to accommodate three piglets. I scanned two slides from that photo shoot, and then sized appropriately to produce this composite. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers of the world. Village Purulia, India.
