A pair of new Burlington Northern SD70MACs roll a westbound coal empty past the busy shops in West Burlington in the fall of 1995.
Within a few months BN would merge with the Santa Fe and the new BNSF would curtail operations and finally more or less abandoned the shops a few years later.
It is a ghost town now.

Pristine pure and beautiful even in harsh light. The sleeping bear sand dunes drop off at a steep angle. So much fun to run down but you can't stop once you get going. Climbing back up is HELL, don't do it.....just kidding DO IT you'll never forget it!
Now imagine this at dawn's early light or at sunset when the sand is illuminated with color and every shade of blue in the sky and the lake. Hovering at 500 feet above the lake, I have those images in my head but I was too busy saving lives to be taking photos.
Running down the dunes video, watch to get the feel of how enormous they are!

Byodoin Temple, Uji, Japan
When I travel to a new place my eyes tend to hunt for some interesting examples of architecture.
Two years ago, after my eyes had enough view of shrines in Kyoto, I decided to explore Byodoin Temple in Uji, the finest Buddhist temple in Japan.
Byodoin Temple was originally a villa, then changed hands several times before it was converted into the temple with an intent to recreate heaven in the Latter Day of the Dharma. The Latter Day of the Dharma is also described as “the age of conflict” (Mappo in Japanese), when several natural disasters and violent chaotic wars coincidently broke out in Japan. The aristocracy, who made up the Buddhist faith, was shaken to the core. Pure Land Buddhist teachings hence gained tremendous popularity at the time as the teachings convinced people to put faith in the power of Amida Noyarai, who will help bring them to heaven.
This image shows you the Amida Hall (nicknamed Phoenix Hall), the only remaining original aristocratic temple of the Heian Period looked like. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t resemble heaven in your mind. It is an uplifting view that we all need, especially now.
I spent the morning in a canoe hoping for some osprey to photograph. Instead I witnessed a kid having the time of his life surfing behind a boat.

August 2015. Ridiculous amount of bokeh going on. OK, OK, I know bokeh is a quality not a quantity but there really is a lot of it bubbling around this flower.

PURE PLAY, inspired by the setting sun. There is hardly any practical functionality in this behaviour of wild geese. The end of the first March day this year.
Took my old E-M1 gen.1 with me, with stills on my mind. The camera has poor video, but the scene was irresistible.
Wild geese make a distinct sound and have a demeanour which is not always the same. I often hear them at night, when they fly in small groups low above my flat 25 m high. Then it's more like navigating, a kind of sound radar. Or encouraging each other. Yesterday evening (5 March) I was late coming back from the river shore, and the geese had been conspicuously calm for an hour... when I was at the middle of that big field, it was almost completely dark already. Camera already packed in my bag. Then something like exploded. The whole flock of around thousand wild geese put up a play for me. They suddenly burst into flight from the field on my right hand side and came right above my head over to the other side of the field where they landed. It was the sound of a thunder, all those huge wings flapping and the geese honking and calling. Like fff tutti of a large symphony orchestra. There were many more birds than could fit in the lens. –Maybe I should take a sound recorder with me the next time... :)))

Crater lake is a lake that formed when Mount Mazama, a stratovolcano collapsed forming a large basin that filled with water. The cone shaped Island is Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder cone that has since pushed its way above the lake level. Note that this is one of National Geographic's 100 most beautiful places on planet Earth. The Caldera that forms this basin is still an active volcano.
The Klamath Indians describe the catastropic eruption of Mount Mazama and the creation of Crater Lake in one of their legends. Their legend of a raging war between two great volcanoes, Mount Mazama and Mount Shasta, parallels the geological history of Crater Lake.
The spirits of the Earth and sky often came and talked with the people. Llao was the spirit of the Below-World who lived beneath Lao-Yaina (today known as Mount Mazama). Skell was the spirit of the Above-World. Llao often came up and stood on top of Lao-Yaina, and his head would touch the stars near the home of Skell. There was no lake then, just a hole through which Llao passed to see the outside world. One day, Llao saw Loha, daughter of the Klamath Indian chief, and fell in love with her beauty. She rejected him because he was from the Below-World. He became angry and swore that he would take revenge on her people. He tried to destroy the people with the curse of fire. Klamath Indian wise men sought help from Skell, the spirit of Mount Shasta. Skell, seeing the plight of the Klamath people decided to help them.
Skell descended from the sky to the top of Mount Shasta. Skell and Llao were thundering and trembling the Earth, hurling red hot rocks back and forth to each other (from Mount Shasta to Mount Mazama), causing great landslides. A terrible darkness spread over the area for days. All spirits of Earth and sky took part in this battle, creating intense fear among the people. Attempting to calm the ferocious volcano gods and to make up for the sins of the tribe, two medicine men offered to sacrifice themselves and jumped into the pit of Below-World. Impressed by their heroic sacrifice, Skell fought even harder. He finally defeated Llao, driving Llao deep down into the Below-World. He collapsed the top of Mount Mazama to imprison Llao forever beneath the world. Skell wanted peace and tranquility to cover up this dark pit, so he filled it with the beautiful blue water.
