Bulky trash, waste, cheap materials: pure gold! At least in the eyes of many active designers.
In cooperation with IfA (the German Institute for International & Cultural Relations) and TCDC (Thailand Creative & Design Centre), the Goethe-Institut Thailand presents Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded! This exhibition explores the subject of rubbish and presents approaches to using trash to create useful, valuable products. The exhibits can be seen in the Gallery Room of the TCDC Bangkok from May 18th to July 22nd 2018. Admission is free.
Global industrialization and ever greater levels of consumption make upcycling an urgent matter. IfA has chosen to address this issue with a design exhibition and the creation of a platform via a series of workshops and conferences. The cornerstones of this project are ethics, responsibility, internationalization and co-creation. The Pure Gold exhibition consists of two complementary parts: the physical and material exhibition and the virtual platform, which offers a space for dialogue, discussion and the storage of knowledge.
Working with seven curators from Europe, Latin America, North Africa and the Near East, East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, IfA has brought together 76 exhibits and a total of 53 designers (including Thai designers), thus offering a diversity that adds extra value and appreciation to the exhibition within its many diverse contexts.
The workshops take place at the exhibition venues together with local design students and in cooperation with FabCafé Bangkok. Results are presented in the shape of instructables , providing a further platform for discussion and exchange of knowledge.
At every venue of the Pure Gold tour, IfA invites local designers to exhibit their work. In Bangkok, three Thai designers will be presenting their creations related to upcycling and using trash to create useful products.

People always ask me "Aren't you afraid of those bears?".
The simple truth of the matter is that the first time I saw a huge Katmai bear running in my direction (clearly different than "running at me"), I have to admit that I was a bit like a "deer in the headlights". I wanted so badly to take the shot, but I was a bit concerned about my safety and my overall sanity at that moment. At the more popular areas of Katmai NP (Brooks area), the park rangers don't let you enter into an area that the bears are occupying, if it's not an acceptable distance between you and the bear. We walked over to the Visitor Center and just outside we could see a bear playing down the shore a little bit at the water's edge. The rangers allowed us (4 of us) to stand there and observe. Then one of the bears came running up closer to where we were standing. They made us back up from the shoreline toward the VC area, but didn't make us leave since we were already there. We were permitted to observe from a less noticeable area. This was my first "up close" opportunity, so I tried to hide in the brush while taking these shots (hence the brush in the shot) in my attempt to "stay safe". Funny how I actually thought those few wisps of tree branches was going to protect me.
After some time though, I realized that these bears are pure (from man's interference) and natural in their movement and intention. One should definitely be educated about bear behavior (very specific to the type of bear)& respect them, but need not be scared of them.
