Expired/Discontinued Kodak Professional T400 CN Film (Process C-41)/Canonet QL-17 G-III
Well friends, the Canonet QL-17 G-III I purchased as a gift for my sister came back from Camera Techs looking almost as good as new.
Chuck, the technician that worked on this camera did an amazing job. Whatever old foam was left on the camera had turned--with the years and lack of use-- into a black sticky tar that threatened with dislodging and spreading around the guts of the camera, lens, etc.
Prior to taking the Canonet in, I tried to remove as much of the gooey matter as possible with a paper towel wrapped index finger, loaded a roll and shot it to see how much light was leaking through. You can see the shots on this Canonet set (about 7 shots prior to this one). It was really bad.
In any case, this is the first roll shot post-repair. Tested at all speeds and apertures for the past two days (this photo was taken around 11am this morning, on my way to Matt's at the Market for lunch with friends) and developed about an hour ago at Rite-Aid in White Center. All photos, ALL 24 frames came out.
Tomorrow the camera will be sent--along with a brand new Domke Gripper strap I got at Glazer's and a rubberized hooded UV filter (found on eBay, to double up as lens protection)--to my sister all the way to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Before I send the camera to Giselle I'll take a photo of the foam job to share with fellow Canonet lovers and anyone here in Seattle who's been thinking of replacing the foam on a vintage camera such as this one. It is fantastic what skilled hands can do with great little cameras that have been abandoned and forgotten for years and deserve to be used and enjoyed.
Gissy, get ready. You are going to love your camera. ;D

"Irish Immigration in Waterbury, CT
Irish immigration is well known to have played an important role in the "Peopling of America", but the impact of Irish immigration specific to the city of Waterbury, CT has not been very well documented.
Given the impact that many different immigrant groups played in the development of Waterbury, it is no surprise that Irish immigration was heavily criticized by other ethnic groups in 20th century Waterbury.
The Abrigador section of Waterbury, now just a fraction of its original size, was dominated by Irish immigrants. A January 1995 Republican-American newspaper article quoted Waterbury resident William Fitzpatrick, "This was an All-Irish area and you couldn't cross the Baldwin Street Bridge unless you were Irish or you'd get stoned to death. My father used to tell me that story, but I don't think it was true." Certainly this was a tale that grew with time, but what 21st century residents now know as Hamilton Avenue was once called Dublin Street. The widening of Interstate-84 in the 1970s all but destroyed the once-thriving neighborhoods. Today the area is best known as the home to the 'Cross on the Hill' at Holyland USA."

Der 102,5 ha große Neue Garten liegt im Norden Potsdams am Jungfernsee. Über das Wasser hinweg bestehen gestalterische Verbindungen zu den Gärten von Sacrow, Pfaueninsel, Glienicke und Babelsberg, wodurch er eine zentrale Rolle in der Gartenlandschaft erhält. Trotz Überformung durch Lenné hat er noch sentimentale Einzelpartien aus der Entstehungsphase vor 1800 bewahrt. Seine Geschichte fängt mit dem Ankauf eines zentralen Grundstückes durch den Kronprinzen Friedrich Wilhelm (II.) an. Im Jahre 1787, ein Jahr nach dem Regierungsantritt, begann die Anlage des Neuen Gartens, der seinen Namen programmatisch in der Abkehr vom alten Barockpark Sanssouci erhielt. Als Gestalter wurde der Wörlitzer Gärtner Johann August Eyserbeck verpflichtet, was die Umsetzung der an englischen Gärten orientierten Idealvorstellung Friedrich Wilhelms garantierte. Ungünstig für den einheitlichen Charakter des Gartens war der sich über mehrere Jahre hinziehende Grundstücksankauf. Neben einbezogenen ehemaligen Wohnhäusern entstanden zwischen 1787 und 1792 wichtige neue Bauten im Garten, von denen heute noch viele bestehen: Marmorpalais, Küche in Form einer römischen Tempelruine, Gotische Bibliothek, Schindelhaus, Orangerie, Grotte, Meierei, Pyramide (Eiskeller) und das holländische Etablissement. Vor letzterem verläuft, begleitet von Pyramidenpappeln (seit 1864 Pyramideneichen), ein Musterstück für den preußischen Chausseebau. In der Gartenanlage entstand eine Fülle von Partien unterschiedlicher sentimentaler Prägung, die von den jeweiligen Bauten oder Pflanzungen in ihrem Charakter bestimmt werden. 1816 überarbeitete Peter Joseph Lenné im Auftrag des Thronfolgers den zugewachsenen und unmodern gewordenen Garten. Unter Erhalt vieler Bereiche und Entfernung zu dichter Gehölze bekam der Neue Garten große Sichten und Wiesenräume, gefälligere Wegeführung und vor allem die Blickverbindungen zu den Nachbargärten (Sacrow, Pfaueninsel, Glienicke, Babelsberg, Potsdam, Pfingstberg). Trotz kleinerer Veränderungen zur Kaiserzeit und durch Rücknahme von Einbauten aus der Zeit der russischen Nutzung (1945–1954) hat sich noch immer die von Lenné geplante Grundstruktur bewahrt. Das Schloss Cecilienhof, 1913–1917 für den Kronprinzen erbaut, fügt sich sehr harmonisch ein. Eine 13 ha große Fläche, die 1960-1990 als Grenzgebiet zerstört war, ist inzwischen wieder hergestellt worden.

The New Garden, which covers 102.5 hectares, lies at Jungfernsee Lake in the northern part of Potsdam. Creative viewing connections extend across the water to the gardens of Sacrow, Peacock Island, Glienicke and Babelsberg, evidencing the park’s central role in this overall garden landscape. Despite its having been reshaped by Lenné, the garden has nevertheless preserved individual, emotive areas that date from the phase of its creation before 1800. The garden’s history begins with the purchase of a central piece of land by Crown Prince Frederick William (II). In 1787, a year after his ascension to the throne, the laying out of the grounds commenced at the New Garden, the name being programmatic for the abandonment of the old baroque park at Sanssouci. Wörlitz gardener Johann August Eyserbeck was charged with its creation, a decision that ensured a transformation in alignment with Frederick William’s ideals oriented towards English gardens.
What undermined the uniform character of the garden was the fact that it had taken several years to purchase the land. In addition to the former private houses that were included, important new buildings were constructed in the garden between 1787 and 1792, many of which still exist today: the Marble House, the kitchen in the shape of a Roman temple ruins, the Gothic Library, Shingle House, orangery, grotto, dairy, pyramid (ice house) and the Dutch houses. In front of the latter, we find a prime example of Prussian country road construction lined with pyramid-shaped cottonwood poplars (now, since 1864, pyramid-shaped oaks). On the garden grounds, a number of areas were created, whose characters were emotively shaped by the respective buildings or plantings to varying degrees.
In 1816, Peter Joseph Lenné was commissioned by the successor to the throne to rework the overgrown garden, which no longer conformed with the contemporary taste. By preserving many areas while removing copses that had become too dense, the New Garden was provided with new perspectives and meadow spaces, more pleasing pathways and above all, with viewing connections to the neighboring gardens (Sacrow, Peacock Island, Glienicke, Babelsberg, Potsdam, Pfingstberg Hill). Despite the smaller changes made during Imperial times and owing to the removal of installations dating from the time the garden was used by the Russians (1945 –1954), Lenné’s basic structural design has been retained up to this day. Cecilienhof Country House, built for the Crown Prince from 1913 to 1917, harmonizes in this setting. In the meantime, an area of 13 hectares has been restored, which had been destroyed during its use as part of the border zone from 1960 to 1990.

The area now known as "Hot Springs National Park" first became United States territory in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The Dunbar-Hunter Expedition came here in 1804, sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the southern reaches of the recent purchase. Soon a bustling town grew up around the hot springs to provide services for health seekers. The resultant bathing industry led to Hot Springs becoming known as the "American Spa." But, even before becoming a U.S. territory, Hot Springs National Park had a long and colorful history, beginning long before its designation as Hot Springs Reservation in 1832. American Indians came here for thousands of years to quarry novaculite for their tools and weapons. Finally, on April 20, 1832, President Andrew Jackson signed legislation to set aside "...four sections of land including said (hot) springs, reserved for the future disposal of the United States (which) shall not be entered, located, or appropriated, for any other purpose whatsoever." This makes Hot Springs National Park the oldest national park among current National Park units, predating Yellowstone National Park by forty years.
West Mountain Drive has entrances on Prospect Avenue and Whittington Avenue. It is a two way road that leads to the Summit Loop where you will find three overlooks. The first overlook affords a good view of the former Army-Navy Hospital (barely seen in this photo in the lower right corner) and the Hot Springs Mountain Tower (seen in the photograph above) that is 216 feet above Hot Springs Mountain and 1,256 feet above Sea level. The second overlook has a historic trail shelter and picnic tables and the summit has a view south to the Trap Mountains and Lake Hamilton. This shelter was built in 1924 making it one of the oldest mountain shelters still in use today at Hot Springs National Park. Addtionaly, at the third overlook, there is access to sunset trail at the summit.

I took my newly purchased AiPAS F3 Adventurer e-bike out for a ride. I rode to KNOX WALLS at Emory Place (bringing my Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max and Sony a6000 & Rokinon 12mm f2 lens ) to capture images of the large and vibrant murals! Then I stopped off at Three Rivers Market before heading home.

Here is a shot taken on a Sunday morning that just followed a snow storm. The Park is such a great place to enjoy a sunny walk in the snow and I wanted to show how peaceful this place is. I thought that it could be interesting to show the contrast between the wildness of the bushes in the foreground and the style of the building in the background. No technical challenge here, except waiting for a clear shot without anyone on the bridge.

Voici une photo prise un dimanche matin, juste après une tempête de neige. Le parc est un très bel endroit pour se promener au soleil dans la neige et je voulais retranscrire cette ambiance de calme au milieu de la ville. Je trouvais intéressante l’idée de jouer sur le contraste entre les buissons au premier plan et les immeubles à l’arrière plan. Pas de défi technique ici, mis à part la longue attente pour avoir un cliché sans personne sur le pont!
