I made this sweet little dress for (soon to be) 3 year old Allie, the daughter of a friend of mine www.flickr.com/photos/emedoodle/ . Her favorite color is violet and she loves handmade dresses so I knew what to make her and easily decided to make the adorable Puppet Show Dress from a pattern by Oliver and S. This was my first time making this pattern and I have to say I am very pleased with the finished product. I used quite a few pins to make sure that the sleeves attached correctly but in the end they were beautiful and worth the extra fuss. I had NO PROBLEM making all 9 button holes on this little sweetie as I have switched from using my machine's automatic buttonholer to the manual setting (much more control is better in this area). I can see many more of these in my future! If you would like to see pictures of Allie in the dress hop on over here www.flickr.com/photos/emedoodle/5965563328/in/photostream/ thanks Emily for taking great pics of your cute girlie :)

Traditional children's entertainment, Punch and Judy. A cold wet Saturday, many of the displays where canceled to to the bad weather.

Many regional variants of Pulcinella were developed as the character spread across Europe, first as a marionette, then as a glove-puppet. In Germany, Punch is called Kasperle or Kaspar while Judy is "Grete". In the Netherlands he is Jan Klaassen (and Judy is Katrijn); in Denmark Mester Jackel; in Russia Petrushka; in Romania Vasilache; and in France he has been called Polichinelle since the mid-1600s. A specific version appeared in Lyon in the early 19th century under the name "Guignol"; it soon became a conservatory of Lyon popular language. Wikipedia

Up on the hill top overlooking Rome we can across an old fashioned puppet show. It was run by a husband and wife team who have been doing this for 50 years. A woman in the audience who was there with her young daughter commented that she had watched the show when she was a child. (Claudia translated!)

In England we call it Punch and Judy. Though through political correctness it no longer takes place in many places as it is considered too violent (adults never give children credit for knowing what's real and what isn't)

Yup, so i"m already slacking on the project using James' phone to sneak in my shot! But this was ingredients to a chicken broth I made. First time in years, like a decade haha! Some foodies may know that the broth came out super spicy because of this Serrano's seeds. Yikes. My stomach seems fine with it so far though. Fingers crossed because I'm having it for lunch again tomorrow.

today: Aside from cooking broth from the closest to natural ingredients you can get... Practicing our puppet show at work... We got some work to do before the big debut in 2 weeks! :I

The production had a limited run on account of curious hands.

Taken by my sister with my camera.

I pulled buttons out of my button box and couldn't find enough of one color, so I used two.

Jean Kuecher brought a delightful puppet show to the library to entertain the children. She told four stories including several different kinds of puppets, including some that glowed under a black light!

During summer we got to see a lot of puppetshows, mainly through the library. So as soon as we got home that day they continued the show with everything they could pretty much find in the house :)

We enjoyed fun stories and watched the Kiss for Little Bear puppet show.

The "Pip the Mouse: The Mouse Before Christmas" stage and puppets were created by Dr. George Creegan, whose company built sixteen such shows to travel around the country during the Christmas season. The company also built puppets and/ or mechanized animals/exhibits for such places as Disney parks. But, Max Hess, owner of the famous Hess Brothers Department Store, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, persuaded Dr. Creegan to sell this one to him in 1962. The puppet show was put on during every Christmas holidayat Hess Brothers until 1995. Then, in 1996, after Bon-Ton purchased Hess's, Pip was donated and was passed along through a few organizations until the Liberty Bell Museum obtained it. I worked at Hess Brothers in the mid 1960's and saw all the holiday wonder around the store.

Putli wallahs at their puppet show in Pachewargarh. We ended up seeing 3 shows but this one was the best, by far :)

These two guys carved and painted all the wooden puppets themselves and the women in their family made the puppet clothes and the set for the show.

The drum on the left is called a dholak and is traditionally used in puppet shows. The guys played the drum and a harmonium, and they also sang.

Tradition Puppet Show used to convey folk tales and legends of the past, which seldom seen in modern city lifestyle. These puppets were created from individual parts and place them together using wire or string to manoeuvre the puppets from behind a translucent white screen made either from cloth or paper. The cut out areas of will allow light to shine through so audience would have seen the moving shadows of the puppets.

I've published a similar image form a scan before but it is one of my favourites from that time with the children's expressions.
