The scenic Huddersfield Road ground, in Delph, of Delph & Dobcross Cricket Club. The hosts are batting against Hoylandswaine during a pulsating top-versus-second match of the day in the Premiership division of the Drakes Huddersfield League. The fixture produced more than 700 runs! Arron Lilly, on Lancashire's books, was the hero of an 11-run Delph win. He scored 122, figuring in a fourth-wicket stand worth 207 with fellow century-maker Greg Buckley, then took five wickets at a cost of 108.
Two interesting occurrences: an early tea was taken 4.3 overs from the end of the Delph & Dobcross innings because an ambulance was summoned to assist an elderly female spectator reportedly feeling faint. Gharib Nawaz contributed a century for Hoylandswaine but was grateful for an act of sportsmanship from home skipper Andrew Gleave. Lilly, aware Nawaz, at the non-striker's end, was well out of his ground, whipped off the bails as he ran in to bowl. The umpire ruled Nawaz run out only for Gleave, after several minutes' animated discussion, to call the batter back to the crease.
Match statistics: Delph & Dobcross 367-8 off 50 overs (Greg Buckley 131, Arron Lilly 122, Chris Laker 43, Shakir Muhammad 37, Michael Cramner 4-64) 8pts beat Hoylandswaine 356-8 off 50 overs (Gharib Nawaz 116, Michael Cramner 70, Ryan Robinson 50, Sarjinder Pal Singh 36, Arron Lilly 5-108, Shakir Muhammad 3-87) 3pts by 11 runs. Hoylandswaine won the toss and elected to field. Admission: £1.50. Programme: 12 pages (w/a). Attendance: 136. Mug of tea: 50p. Tray of chips: £1.50.
Delph & Dobcross Cricket Club were founded in 1873. They were longstanding members of the now defunct Saddleworth League. In 1999, they joined the Huddersfield League. They lifted the Sykes Cup in 2012. The 2016 season promises to be Delph & Dobcross's best at this level: they top the Premiership table and are through to both the Sykes Cup and T20 competition finals. In May, they rattled up a Huddersfield League limited overs record 528-5 as they crushed Championship strugglers Marsden by 406 runs in the first round of the Sykes Cup.

Young Munster scrum half Brian Haugh who was my man of the match carries hard here in this pulsating Ulster Bank AIL game which thoroughly entertained all who were in attendance at Tom Clifford Park.He opened the scoring landing a difficult penalty in the opening minutes.Little did anyone know that it would seperate the teams at four o'clock ! Lansdowne stormed into the lead from there with three unanswered tries all of which were converted, 3 - 21 at the break. In the second half in true "game of two halves" style Young Munster decided to wake up and play. They produced a wonderful exhibition of never give up rugby and scored three unanswered tries of their own which he converted to leave Lansdowne shell shocked and losers,24 - 21. If only every game was as exciting as this ! Game of Saturday 1st March 2014.

My 2001 iBook - bought a week after launch. At the time people boggled at its size and futuristic whiteness, and the pulsating 'sleep' light that made the machine appear to breathe. The size and shape still feel satisfying, although it's heavy. Another pulsating day of high insensity, non stop action, and fantastic entertainment. It makes me wonder why i bother sometimes with football when RL offers so much more. Excellent atmosphere, no pathetic jobsworth club officials.
Leigh scored first with an excellent try by the ever impressive Liam Kay (5) but Fev hit back strongly and had the better of things and took a HT 6-4 lead. Centurions start signing Mr Moimoi got pole-axed in the first half but that proved a huge mistake by Fev, because he came back on later even more fired up !. But then in the second half Leigh's power, strength and intensity proved too much. Leigh's Tom Armstrong also bagged a brace and was outstanding like most of the squad was.
Fev huffed and puffed but couldnt break down a very solid Centurions team who are a Super League outfit in everything but name. Make no mistake they are that impressive.
Featherstone as a town for some is a somewhat depressing place and has seen better days. But it hosts two decent rugby league teams and has loyal supporters who remember dearly their three challenge cup wins at Wembley. I remember watching them in the '73 final beating Bradford Northern 33-14. The whole of Fev seemed to have migrated South that day.
But they say every downside has an upside. Featherstone does have an upside .... it has a Lidl !!
Heartbeat by Charles Pétillon
Installation August-September 2015
Heartbeat stretches 54 metres in length and 12 metres in width, and incorporates gentle pulsating white light to symbolise the beating of a heart and reflect the history, energy and dynamism of the district.
Charles Pétillon said: “The balloon invasions I create are metaphors. Their goal is to change the way in which we see the things we live alongside each day without really noticing them. With Heartbeat I wanted to represent the Market Building as the beating heart of this area – connecting its past with the present day to allow visitors to re-examine its role at the heart of London’s life.
“Each balloon has its own dimensions and yet is part of a giant but fragile composition that creates a floating cloud above the energy of the market below. This fragility is represented by contrasting materials and also the whiteness of the balloons that move and pulse appearing as alive and vibrant as the area itself.”

Suddenly the center tube of the spaceship emitted pulsating light and the ship began to accelerate. Strange: even though the ship moved away from me, the reflected sunlight at the surface of the ship was red shifted instead of blue. This shows that science cannot correctly explain all effects occurring in real world.

Edited Chandra Space Telescope/XMM-Newton image of a black hole pulsating (or at least the material/radiation around the black hole) in the galaxy GSN 069. Optical field from the Digital Sky Survey. Color/processing variant.
Original caption: A supermassive black hole is blasting out X-rays about every nine hours, according to data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton, as described in our latest press release. This indicates that this black hole, containing about 400,000 times the mass of our Sun, is consuming significant amounts of material about three times per day.
The main panel of this graphic is a visible light image taken by the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) around the galaxy known as GSN 069, located in the center of the image. The inset gives a time-lapse of Chandra data taken over a period of about 20 hours on February 14 and 15, 2019, centered on the X-ray source in the middle of GSN 069. The sequence runs in a loop to show that the X-ray brightness of the source changes regularly and dramatically over the Chandra observation. Three X-ray eruptions are observed. (Note that to clearly show the Chandra source is located in GSN 069, the size of the box in the center of the DSS image is about ten times larger than the Chandra field in the inset.)
XMM-Newton was the first to observe this phenomenon in GSN 069 with the detection of two bursts on December 24, 2018. Researchers then followed up with more XMM-Newton observations on January 16 and 17, 2019, and found five outbursts. The Chandra observations less than a month later — on February 14 and 15 — revealed an additional three outbursts.
These repetitive outbursts are evidence that the supermassive black hole at the center of GSN 069, located 250 million light years from Earth, is consuming about four Moons' worth of material about three times a day. That's equivalent to almost a million billion billion pounds going into the black hole per feeding.
While scientists had previously found two "stellar-mass" black holes (that weigh about 10 times the Sun's mass) occasionally undergoing regular outbursts before, this behavior has never been detected from a supermassive black hole until now.
During the outbursts the X-ray emission detected by Chandra becomes about 20 times brighter than during the quiet times. The temperature of gas falling towards the black hole also climbs, from about one million degrees Fahrenheit during the quiet periods to about 2.5 million degrees Fahrenheit during the outbursts. The temperature of the latter is similar to that of gas found around most actively growing supermassive black holes.
The origin of this hot gas has been a long-standing mystery because it appears to be too hot to be associated with the disk of infalling matter surrounding the black holes. Although its origin is also a mystery in GSN 069, the ability to study a supermassive black hole where hot gas repeatedly forms then disappears may provide important clues.
The Chandra data were crucial for this study because they were able to show that the X-ray source is located in the center of the host galaxy, which is where a supermassive black hole is expected to be. The combination of data from Chandra and XMM-Newton implies that the size and duration of the black hole's meals have decreased slightly, and the gap between the meals has increased. Future observations will be crucial to see if the trend continues.
A paper describing these results, with lead author Giovanni Minuitti (ESA's Center of Astrobiology in Spain), appeared in the September 11, 2019 issue of the journal Nature. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center manages the Chandra program. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's Chandra X-ray Center controls science and flight operations from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This is the Crab Nebula, M1. This represents an unguided 10-minute image. This about the limit possible, unguided, for my little 81mm telescope. The nebula was not visible with the eyepiece I had in the flip-mirror apparatus I use in my setup. I tried to use Astro Tortilla to plate-solve to pinpoint the location, but I couldn't get the program to solve for the data I had given it. Luckily, the mount was pretty much spot-on with this go-to. On a 10-second frame-and-focus I could see a faint smudge in the center of the field. I did a 2-minute exposure and, sure enough, there it was. Not much detail, but at least I can say I've seen the Crab Nebula with my own equipment.
That you can see this nebula is pretty amazing. This nebula is the remnant of a star that went supernova in 1054 AD. The Chinese recorded it, so did the Native Americans in the desert Southwest. A neutron star, approximately 20 km in diameter, is powering the nebula's emission via synchrotron radiation (free electrons accelerated by the neutron star's incredibly strong magnetic field). This neutron star has a rotational period of about 30 times per second. Here is a recording (in the radio spectrum) documenting the rotation rate of this neutron star:
www.parkes.atnf.csiro.au/people/sar049/eternal_life/super...
The Crab Pulsar, PSR B0531+21 (PSR=Pulsating Source of Radio) is composed almost entirely of neutrons with a density slightly higher than that found in an atomic nucleus. Basically, it's a huge, incredibly dense (the neutrons are nearly touching one another) nucleus composed of 10^57 neutrons held together by gravity instead of the strong nuclear force. To get an idea of this stellar remnant’s density, imagine all the people on this planet stuffed into a cube 1.5 centimeters on a side. Or another example, a modern-day aircraft carrier shrunk down to the size of the little ball in the end of a ball-point pen.
The force of gravity on this stellar remnant is incredible. Earth's gravitational acceleration is 9.8 meters per second squared. A mass dropped from 1 meter on Earth’s surface reaches a velocity, upon reaching the ground, of about 5 miles/hour. That same mass, dropped from a height of 1 meter on the surface of the Crab Nebula’s neutron star, would reach a velocity, upon hitting the surface, of about 2.1 million miles/hour. This neutron star’s gravitational acceleration is 1.86x10^12 meters/sec^2 or about 190 billion times Earth’s gravitational acceleration. And you thought you weighed a lot on Earth.
