Mud-puddling, or simply puddling, is a behaviour most conspicuous in butterflies, but occurs in other animals as well, mainly insects; they seek out nutrients in certain moist substances such as rotting plant matter, mud and carrion and they suck up the fluid. Where the conditions are suitable, conspicuous insects such as butterflies commonly form aggregations on wet soil, dung or carrion. From the fluids they obtain salts and amino acids that play various roles in their physiology, ethology and ecology.

A puddle from a wee stroll this afternoon - have a great Saturday evening - cheers (I'm working on my iPhone photography as I've traded in my Nikon D500 & am waiting on Santa delivering a new toy at Xmas) I'm like wee boy very excited - I suspect I'll not be able to sleep the night before he comes down the chimney. However I've got to say this iPhone is a brilliant camera.

This is the first year I've seen chipmunks eating dandelions. Finally, we can agree on this! Have as many as you want! It has been cold and dandelions are really the only thing that has emerged. I'm finding these little puddles of dandelion petals all over the terrace. It's like they brought me flowers and it's a peace gesture in exchange for all the apples they are going to eat in a few months.
