In the introduction to this album, first published in 1916, the author,Ernst Reisinger, states his intention of offering a work that is not strictly a travel account but that will strengthen the bonds between Greece and Germany. With ninety photographs by himself, F. Boissonnas and Van Lüpke, and reproductions of engravings by V.M. Coronelli, E. Dodwell, J. Stuart and N. Revett, and L.-E.-S.-J. de Laborde, as well as scholarly texts by L. Ross, E. Curtius and others, which treat the subject of Greece in depth, Reisinger aims to offer a token of love to the Greek people. He collected his material from libraries in Munich and Berlin during the First World War. Many reproductions in the volume come from photographs in the Prussian Photographic Archive in Berlin and present rare views (of around 1910) of mainly continental Greece and the islands.

On browsing through the album, we come upon views from Athens and Attica, Corinth, the Argolid, Arcadia and Messinia, Epirus, Mount Athos, the Ionian Islands, Aegina and the Cyclades. It is moving to see the Isthmus of Corinth, Bassae, Sparta and Mystras, Methana, Tiryns, Eleusis and Epidaurus, Hosios Loukas, Meteora, the Byzantine churches in Arta, Melos, Tempe, Paros, Agrinio and Amphissa, in unbiased shots from the first decade of the twentieth century. It should be noted that the photographs of Corinth were taken before the excavations of the American School, and those in Olympia and Delphi before the restoration of the respective temples at these archaeological sites.

İlk baskısı 1916 yılında yapılan kitap, kendi fotoğraflarından ve Fr. Boissonnas ile Van Lüpke'nin 90 fotoğrafı, V.M. Coronelli, Ed. Dodwell, J. Stuart & N. Revett, L.-E.-S.-J. de Laborde'dan gravür kopyaları, L. Ross, Er. Curtius ve başka yazarların kaleminden çıkmış metinlerle tamamlanıyor. Reisinger malzemesini I. Dünya Savaşı sırasında Münih ve Berlin kütüphanelerinden derlemişti.

I was contacted recently and asked if I would sell a couple of my images so that they could be used in a magazine. I agreed, the magazine arrived in the post today. Both images were used, and one was used as a backdrop for a 2 page spread.

It's in "Paranormal" magazine, issue 27, September 2008.

I'm feeling quite chuffed :-)

I got published in JPG magazine. YEAY!

I am really happy and couldn't believe they used the picture as the opening to the theme. You can see the original picture here on JPG or on Flickr.

Published in Westknits Book One

by Stephen West

It has been an ambition of mine for some years now to have a book published, in which would feature some of the best images from my collection of old postcards and ephemera relating to Bangor, my hometown.

I’m pleased to announce that I have sourced a publisher who would like to publish my first book! The publication will be around 112pp, printed in full colour, featuring some of my best loved Bangor postcard images. Half of the images will be from my own collection and the remainder will be taken by members of Bangor & North Down Camera Club. The camera club members will replicate the scenes depicted in the historic postcards, showing how the views look today. So, one page will have the historic view and the page opposite will show how the same view appears now. Alongside the images will be notes of historical interest and titbits of Bangor’s rich social history, as well as quotes (often fascinating, sometimes bizarre or hilarious) taken from the messages penned by the senders of the original postcards.

The book should be published by about early November 2012. More details will follow. In the meantime, let me know if you would be willing to help take any of the modern comparison images; I’m sure the camera club members wouldn’t mind a helping hand.

Thanks for all your views and comments over the years. I hope you’ll consider buying a copy of the book, when it comes out :-)

The Hôtel des Anglais

The excellent website scarletfinders.co.uk tells us that in the first winter of the Great War, the Duchess of Westminster's Hospital, afterwards No. 1 Red Cross, was opened at the Casino in Le Touquet.

A pressing need arose for the housing of wives and close relatives who were allowed to visit wounded men at the hospital. Accordingly the British Red Cross Society opened the Hôtel des Anglais in October 1915 as a Red Cross hostel.

The hostel was well situated, being within 3 minutes' walk of the hospital. It had two wings connected by long dining rooms, with a shady garden on the edge of the Forest of Le Touquet.

The Hôtel des Anglais was the first hostel to receive relatives, and it acted as a pioneer for further hostels. It remained open for three years until August 1918.

The guests, who were not required to pay for their stay, were very diverse - wealthy people, village shopkeepers, labourers and their wives, suffered together, feared together, hoped together, and helped each other.

None needed help more than the wives and mothers and fathers racked by fear and anxiety, prolonged in many cases from week to week, and sometimes for months.

For much more fascinating information about the hotel's rôle in the Great War, please refer to scarletfinders.co.uk

Le Touquet

Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, commonly referred to as Le Touquet, is a commune near Etaples, in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France. It has a population of 5,355 but welcomes up to 250,000 people during the summer.

Le Touquet has a reputation as the most elegant holiday resort of northern France, the playground of rich Parisians (hence its full name), with many luxury hotels.

Since the mid-1990's, Le Touquet’s villas have become extremely fashionable amongst architecture lovers throughout Europe who have rediscovered the 'folie' of seaside architecture of both the Roaring Twenties and the 1930's.

Town Trails

Today the town tourist office offers organised trails to see outstanding examples of 19th and 20th century domestic architecture, which are now preserved and protected.

Le Touquet's Early Years

In the 19th. century it was an area of wild sand dunes and forest - part of a hunting estate.

In 1902 Allen Stoneham and John Whitley bought the land through their company Le Touquet Syndicate Ltd., and were instrumental in developing the town into a golf and gambling resort.

It became known as “Paris by the Sea”, and strict building regulations encouraged the most talented architects to create imaginative and innovative developments. The most famous local architect is Louis Quetelart.

The Great War

During most of World War I, Le Touquet was the home of the Duchess of Westminster's (No 1 British Red Cross Society) Hospital for wounded British troops.

The No. 2 Canadian Stationary Hospital had the distinction of being the first Canadian Unit to land on French soil. No. 2 Stationary opened at the Hotel du Golf at Le Touquet on November 27, 1914.

All the 142 British Commonwealth war graves in Le Touquet's Communal Cemetery are from the hospitals. In the same cemetery a wooden obelisk was erected by the commune's lifeboatmen in honour of the British.

H. G. Wells

In 1909, H. G. Wells and Amber Reeves fled to Le Touquet in an abortive elopement. The two returned to Britain after a number of weeks, though Amber later gave birth to Wells's daughter, Anna-Jane Blanco White, after the relationship ended.

Noël Coward

In the 1920's, Noël Coward and the 'smart set' from England spent weekends here, and commissioned more outstanding villa designs echoing traditional and ultra-modern domestic styles.

P. G. Wodehouse

P. G. Wodehouse lived in Le Touquet from 1934 to 1939.

Opening Act of Lordi at Alcatraz in Milan, Dirty Passion, a Swedish Malmö based rock band formed in 2006 by members Emil Ekbladh (vocals), Christopher Olsson (guitar), Björn Wilander (bass) and Markus Winberg (drums). With main influences from the seventies' and eighties' rock scene the band plays all original material which would be best described as classic rock. Since the start, Dirty Passion have been recording and touring intensively, gaining a rapidly growing fan base - locally as well as abroad. With more than 100 concerts played, the band has rocked native venues like KB (Malmö), Mejeriet (Lund), The Tivoli (Helsingborg) and Sticky Fingers (Gothenburg) and foreign venues like The Underworld (London, UK), Borderline (Pisa, Italy), The Rock (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Matrix (Bochum, Germany). Dirty Passion have played support act to bands like Saxon, Y&T and Towers of London and in early 2010 they supported Faster Pussycat and Enuff Z'Nuff for a month long European tour, playing 22 concerts in seven different countries. A debut album is currently in the makings and hopefully it will see the light of day this winter. Some bands build it up on good playing skills and others on good song material. Dirty Passion do both. These four highly technically skilled natural born rockers, with loads of experience, will always bring you the best kick ass rock - on stage as well as in the studio. While other bands come and go, one things is for sure: What you see here is only the beginning.

Ostend

Ostend (Dutch: Oostende, French: Ostende) is a coastal city located in the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium.

On the 19th. September 1826 the local artillery magazine exploded. At least 20 people were killed and a further 200 injured. The affluent quarter of d'Hargras was levelled, and scarcely a building in the city escaped damage. Disease followed the devastation, leading to further deaths.

Ostend became a transit harbour to England in 1846 when the first ferry sailed to Dover.

Important for the image of the town was the attention it started to receive from the Belgian kings Leopold I and Leopold II. Both monarchs liked to spend their holidays in Ostend.

Important monuments and villas were built to please the Royal Family, including the Hippodrome Wellington horse racing track and the Royal Galleries. The rest of aristocratic Belgium followed, and soon Ostend became known as:

"The Queen of Belgian

Seaside Resorts".

Ostend (in common with nearly the entirety of the country) was occupied by German forces and used as an access point to the sea for submarines and other light naval forces for much of the duration of the Great War. As a consequence the port was subjected to two naval assaults by the British Royal Navy.

World War II involved a second occupation of the town by Germany within a period of little more than twenty years; an occupation which it shared this time with most of northern Europe.

Both conflicts brought significant destruction to Ostend. In addition, other opulent buildings which had survived the wars were later replaced with structures in the modernist style.

The Postcard

A mother looking fondly at her baby boy on a postcard published by Jerome who claimed to have "Branches Everywhere".

The back of the card is date-stamped 30th. January 1932. This day was a Saturday.

On the back of the card someone (presumably the mother herself) has written "To Barbara, from Rose and Baby Dennis".

If Rose had had a quick hand-wash prior to the photo being taken it wouldn't have gone amiss.

It is a sobering thought that if Dennis survived WW2 and kept in good health, he would now be in his eighties.

Lady Mary Bowes-Lyon

So what else happened on the 30th. January 1932?

Well, the day marked the birth of Mary Cecilia Colman (née Bowes-Lyon).

Mary was an English socialite, philanthropist, and extra lady-in-waiting to Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy.

The daughter of Michael Bowes-Lyon and Elizabeth Margaret Cator, her paternal aunt was Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and she was thus a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.

-- Mary Bowes-Lyon - The Early Years

Mary Cecilia Bowes-Lyon was born at Gastlings, the Bowes-Lyon family home in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.

Her father, Michael Bowes-Lyon (1893 – 1953), was the fifth son of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th. Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Cecilia Bowes-Lyon, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (née Cavendish-Bentinck).

Mary's mother, Elizabeth Margaret Cator (1899–1959), was a great-granddaughter of Charles Yorke, 4th. Earl of Hardwicke.

Mary had a twin sister, Patricia Maud, later Lady Patricia Tetley, an older brother, Fergus Michael Claude, later Fergus Bowes-Lyon, 17th. Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and a younger brother, Michael Albemarle.

Mary was also a godmother to Diana, Princess of Wales.

Mary attended Hatherop Castle School as a child. In 1949, a coming-out ball was held for her and her twin sister Patricia at Londonderry House, which was attended by their aunt, the Queen, and their cousins, The Princess Elizabeth and The Princess Margaret.

-- Marriage and Children

On the 10th. November 1951 at St Bartholomew-the-Great in London, Mary married at the age of 19 the then-Lieutenant Timothy Colman, son of the cricketer Geoffrey Colman. Timothy's family had set up mustard manufacturer Colman's of Norwich.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret were guests at their wedding at St Bartholomew-the-Great at Smithfields in London.

In the earlier years of their marriage, the Colmans lived in Dorset, whilst Timothy served with the Royal Navy. Later, they moved to Norfolk, where they purchased Bixley Manor.

Together, they had five children:

-- Sarah Rose Colman (born 3rd. May 1953). She married Peter John Charles Troughton in 1977 and had 3 children.

-- Sabrina Mary Colman (born 4th. February 1955). She married Christopher Arthur Penn in 1976 and had 2 children.

-- Emma Elizabeth Colman (born 10th. February 1958). She married Richard Henry Ramsbottom in 1986 and had 1 child.

-- James Russell Colman (born 12th. January 1962). He married Sasha Cotterell in 1994 and had 2 children.

-- Matthew Geoffrey Colman (born 10th. July 1966). He married Jane Johnstone in 1997 and had 2 children.

-- Mary Bowes-Lyon - The Later Years

In 1970, Mary was appointed an Extra Lady-in-waiting to another of the Queen's first cousins, Princess Alexandra, The Hon. Lady Ogilvy.

After her elder brother succeeded their cousin as 17th. Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, she received the title and precedence of a daughter of an earl by royal warrant of precedence in 1974.

In 1998, Mary began serving as the President of the Eastern Daily Press's "We Care 2000" Appeal, which aims to support unpaid carers for the work they do.

She also worked with other charities including the British Red Cross, and served as president of the Norfolk Autistic Society for 26 years, from 1975 until her retirement in 2001.

She also ran a dried flower business, called "Flora Dessica".

-- The Death of Mary Bowes-Lyon

Lady Mary died at her home in Bixley, Norfolk on the 2nd. January 2021 at the age of 88.

In 2009, a handful of London-based musicians travelled to Nairobi in Kenya to collaborate with local musicians there. The project was set up by Hetty Hughes and her friend Aaron Abraham, co-founders of a voluntary organisation called Art of Protest established in order to promote local musicians and rappers. Hetty and Aaron were disheartened by the way they were being sidelined and overlooked, so they set about inviting some London-based musicians to visit Nairobi and collaborate. It was a loose arrangement… there was no specific agenda other than to bring the musicians together, exchange ideas and enjoy the results.

The traditional folkloric music of Kenya has not received the same global exposure as that of Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa or North Africa for example and one of the objectives of this project was to try and build on this. The band draw on a broad spectrum of African influences, from Fela Kuti and Tony Allen to the likes of Thomas Mapfumo and Oumou Sangare, but bar Jesse’s participation with Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, this was the first opportunity for Jesse Hackett (keys), Louis Hackett (bass), Sam Lewis (guitar), Chris Morphitis (bouzouki/guitar) and Tom Skinner (drums) to visit specifically for a musical project.

This postcard must have been published after the Duke of Rutland had sold the estate in 1927 to Sheffield City Council. The National Trust acquired the estate in 1931 after a fund raising appeal.

The Holiday Fellowship looked after the main lodge property as a walkers hostel, so the sign saying REFRESHMENTS at the left hand end may be their work, or possibly the National Trust?

The old car just visible to the left hand side of the central stone staircases, either side of the basement entrance, looks like a 1920's model, but I'm not sure what.

All ideas to fill out this story welcomed.
