Delayed by the Canada Post strike, a package from Finland finally arrived today. The excellent Involuntary Sculptures bookzine includes two of my photographs. Thanks so much to Lorenzo “SerraGlia” Servi and The City Is Ours for including my photography. Olen todella iloinen tänään. Kiitos.

I set up the studio for another try at shooting ants.
Camera and lens: Canon Xti (manual mode f8, 1/200. ISO 100) + Tamron 2x teleconverter + extension tubes (25mm and 37mm) + Canon 100mm macro lens. Magnification is between 2.8 and 3.3 times life size.
Lighting: MR-14 EX set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC. I set the MR-14's ratio control for a third channel and setup a 430EX flash with a Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer that had a gold reflector insert (to make the light "warm"). I set the 430EX to -2/3 FEC via the MR-14 and positioned it so that the bouncer was directly over the "studio".

Black and white photography is (as you may have guessed) by far the most compelling medium for me (although I have a near-complete colour version of this image which I was tempted to post as an alternative!), and typically the advice when shooting is to seek out strong, contrasting colours and tones that convert well to shades of gray for a balanced tonal range. I am of course simplifying things greatly, but those of you who regularly shoot with the intent to convert to mono - and I understand there's something called 'film' too which apparently comes in black and white, what will they think of next? - will I'm sure have by now trained your eye to see in a grayscale colour space. Of course, this is easier said than done - there are scores of awful looking flat, washed out black and white photos created by those who give no consideration to their craft. I met another photographer whilst out on a shoot recently who expressed an interest in what I was taking, so I showed him some of my work via my iphone. He was (or claimed to be!) impressed and told me he'd previously thought of black and white shots in terms of what I've just described; wishy-washy and lacking the impact of their more colourful and vibrant cousins. Step forward anyone who converts to mono simply by just tugging at that little saturation slider - hang your head in shame...
This image was shot on the same foggy morning as 'Something In the Way', and I incurred similar decision making issues during post production (I'll ignore my capture process for the purpose of my point) with both shots, due to the effect of the foggy weather conditions. Don't misunderstand me - fog and mist are a photographer's dream, but I think because of the dampening effect they have on contrast, detail, pattern, texture and line, I believe it's perhaps easier to produce a pleasing picture in colour. As with 'Something In The Way', my challenge then was to try and introduce enough in the way of contrast to the scene to warrant the mono conversion. Some of you are very good at injecting punch into landscapes captured during these conditions, and for my personal preference I enjoy photographs where this level of contrast has been created subtly, so as to allow the poor atmospherics to still take precedence in the image. I'm not entirely sure I succeeded at this with either of these shots (and I might yet post a third from the same morning), but the challenge was an enjoyable one at any rate.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Like word of the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1849 drew thousands of fortune hunters to California, news that a few rare comic books can be worth thousands of dollars prompted many to become comics collectors. Most will be disappointed, and then move on to other ventures.
Ventures such as trading cards. They are the hot ‘collectors’ item now. Capitalizing on the demand, many comic book stores also carry a wide variety of trading cards.
The next step in this melding of collectibles has now been taken. Topps – one of the major producers of trading cards for many years – recently decided to branch out and form its own comic book publishing arm.
The first fruit of their labor is now available. Entitled “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”, it is an adaptation of the motion picture playing in theaters now. Insiders have questioned the wisdom of starting a line off with such a title. Movie adaptations of recent vintage aren’t usually highly valued as collectibles – especially if the movie should flop.
Also, by the time all four issues of this mini-series can see print, the original will be well on its way to video stores. This likewise plays to the theory that people won’t be interested in reading a comic when it’s faster and better to see the actual movie.
Such considerations aside, this is an excellent comic book in terms of scripting, artwork, and overall production values. If nothing else, it proves that Topps can be expected to produce comics with the same high standards of quality that they employ in their trading cards.
It can be enjoyed as a supplement to the movie (and to the original novel), and comes highly recommended as such.
“Bram Stoker’s Dracula” costs $2.95 per issue, and is available in comic book specialty stores.
I finally picked up a copy of the National Geographic - Complete National Parks of the United States. I sold them my photo of the North Bridge in the Minute Man National Historical Park. It's quite cool to see my photo and name in the book!! :)

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

このロットナンバーは、眠っていたレオナルドダヴィンチの作品がオークションにかけらた際に付されたものです。
作品にはサインなどがいっさい記されていなかったため、彼の作品だと断定できませんでした。
しかし、様々な鑑定の結果、陽の光を浴びました。
誰にも気づかれない作品。肩書がなくとも静かに語りかける作品。
僕はこれから様々な形で、多くの皆様に提供できるよう努めてゆきます。

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

Der Rotmilan (Milvus milvus), auch Roter Milan, Gabelweihe oder Königsweihe genannt, ist eine etwa mäusebussardgroße Greifvogelart aus der Familie der Habichtartigen (Accipitridae).
Im Gegensatz zum nahe verwandten, geringfügig kleineren Schwarzmilan, ist seine Verbreitung im Wesentlichen auf Europa beschränkt. Über 50 Prozent des Gesamtbestandes dieser Art brütet in Deutschland. Zurzeit werden keine Unterarten anerkannt. Die am Rande des Aussterbens stehenden Milane der Kapverden wurden früher als Unterart des Rotmilans aufgefasst (M. m. fasciicauda), gelten aber heute mehrheitlich als eigenständige Art (Milvus fasciicauda).
Der Rotmilan ist eine gut bestimmbare Greifvogelart. Verwechselt werden könnte er am ehesten mit dem Schwarzmilan, doch sind auch zu dieser nahe verwandten Milanart gute Unterscheidungsmerkmale gegeben.
Der Rotmilan ist größer als ein Mäusebussard und etwas größer als der Schwarzmilan; er ist ausgesprochen langflügelig und langschwänzig. Der sitzende Vogel wirkt rötlichbraun, wobei eine deutlich hellere, meist ockerfarbene Federsäumung vor allem der Deckfedern des Oberflügels und des Rückengefieders einen kontrastreichen Gesamteindruck vermittelt. Das Kopf-, Nacken- und Kehlgefieder erwachsener Rotmilane ist sehr hell, fast weiß, und weist auffallende schwarze Federnschäfte auf, die diese Körperpartien schwarz gestrichelt erscheinen lassen. Der ziemlich kräftige Schnabel ist an der Basis gelb, am Schnabelhaken dunkelgrau oder schwarz. Die kurzen Beine sind gelb, die Krallen ziemlich schwarz. Die Iris erwachsener Vögel ist blassgelb. Das deutlich schwarz längsgestrichelte Bauchgefieder ist etwas heller und leuchtender rötlichbraun als das Rückengefieder; ebenso gefärbt sind die Unterflügeldeckfedern. Die Arm- und Handschwingen sind an ihren Enden sehr dunkel, fast schwarz.
Rotmilan im SegelflugIm Flug fallen vor allem die langen, relativ schmalen Flügel und der tief gegabelte, rostrote Schwanz auf, der immer in Bewegung ist und auch voll gefächert eine erkennbare Kerbung aufweist. In der Oberansicht kontrastieren die schwarzen Arm- und Handschwingen stark mit dem übrigen, rötlichbraunen Gefieder. Noch kontrastreicher ist das Flugbild von unten, da die Basen der Handschwingen weiß sind und so ein ausgedehntes weißes Flügelfeld bilden und im Flügelbug meist ein schwarzes Abzeichen zu erkennen ist. Die äußersten, tief gefingerten Handschwingen sind in ihrem letzten Drittel schwarz. Im Segelflug sind die Armschwingen leicht über die Horizontale angehoben, die Handschwingen jedoch gerade oder leicht gesenkt, was ein erkennbar geknicktes Flügelprofil ergibt. Die Flügel sind in fast jeder Flugposition im Carpalgelenk deutlich gewinkelt.
Die Geschlechter unterscheiden sich in der Färbung nicht, auch das Jugendgefieder ähnelt stark dem Erwachsenenkleid. Bestes, und bei sehr gutem Licht auch feldornithologisch brauchbares Bestimmungsmerkmal juveniler Individuen, ist der mehr sandfarbene, nicht hellgrauweiße Kopf und das eher gesprenkelt (nicht längsgestrichelt) wirkende, mehr blass rötlichbraune Bauchgefieder. Bei ganz jungen flüggen Rotmilanen kann der Schwanz am äußersten Rand noch eine Rundung aufweisen, da die äußersten Steuerfedern noch nicht ihre volle Länge erreicht haben.
Der reverse Geschlechtsdimorphismus ist beim Rotmilan ähnlich wie beim Schwarzmilan in Bezug auf die Körpergröße nicht sehr deutlich, etwas ausgeprägter jedoch in Bezug auf das Körpergewicht. Die schwersten Männchen haben ein Gewicht von 1,1 Kilogramm; im Durchschnitt liegt das Gewicht etwas unter einem Kilogramm. Die schwersten Weibchen wiegen 1,4 Kilogramm, das Mittel liegt bei 1,2 Kilogramm. Die Körperlänge variiert zwischen 60 und 73 Zentimeter, wovon zwischen 31 und 39 Zentimeter auf den Schwanz entfallen. Die Spannweite beträgt 150 bis 171 Zentimeter.
The Red Kite (Milvus milvus) is a medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. The species is currently endemic to the Western Palearctic region in Europe and northwest Africa, though formerly also occurred just outside in northern Iran.[2] It is a rare species which is resident in the milder parts of its range in western Europe and northwest Africa, but birds from northeastern and central Europe winter further south and west, reaching south to Turkey. Vagrants have reached north to Finland and south to Israel and Libya.[2]
This species was first described by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae in 1758 as Falco milvus.[3]
The Red Kite has been known to successfully hybridize with the Black Kite in captivity where both species were kept together, and in the wild on the Cape Verde Islands.[4] The Red Kites on the Cape Verde Islands are (or rather were) quite distinct in morphology, being somewhat intermediate with Black Kites. The question whether the Cape Verde Kite should be considered a distinct species (Milvus fasciicauda) or a Red Kite subspecies was never really settled. A recent mtDNA study on museum specimens suggests that Cape Verde birds did not form a monophyletic lineage among or next to Red Kites.[5]
However, this interpretation is problematic: mtDNA analysis is very susceptible to hybridization events, the evolutionary history of the Cape Verde population is not known, and the genetic relationship of Red Kites in general is very confusing, with geographical proximity being no indicator of genetic relatedness and the overall genetic similarity high,[6] perhaps indicating a relict species.
Given the morphological distinctness of the Cape Verde birds and the fact that the Cape Verde population was isolated from other populations of Red Kites, it cannot be conclusively resolved at this time whether the Cape Verde population was not a distinct subspecies (as M. migrans fasciicauda) or even species that frequently absorbed stragglers from the migrating European populations into its gene pool. More research seems warranted, but at any rate the Cape Verde population is effectively extinct since 2000, all surviving birds being hybrids with Black Kites (which merely raises further questions about their taxonomic status).[5]
The Red Kite is 60–66 cm (24-27 in) long with a 175–195 cm wingspan; males have a weight of 800–1200 g, and females 1000–1300 g.[2] It is an elegant bird, soaring with long wings held at a dihedral, and long forked tail twisting as it changes direction. The body, upper tail and wing coverts are rufous. The white primary flight feathers contrast with the black wing tips and dark secondaries. Apart from the weight difference, the sexes are similar, but juveniles have a buff breast and belly. The call is a thin piping, similar to but less mewling than the Common Buzzard. There is also a rare white leucistic form which accounts for approximately 1% of hatchlings in the Welsh poulation but is at a disadvantage in the survival stakes.[7]

Adults differ from juveniles in a number of characteristics:
Adults are overall more deeply rufous, compared with the more washed out colour of juveniles;
Adults have black breast-streaks whereas on juveniles these are pale;
Juveniles have a less deeply-forked tail, with a dark subterminal band;
Juveniles have pale tips to all of the greater-coverts (secondary and primary) on both the upper- and under-wings, forming a long narrow pale line; adults have pale fringes to upperwing secondary-coverts only.
These differences hold throughout most of the first year of a bird's life.

A wicked bad day of severe weather in South Central Nebraska. For more information on that day... NWS Official Report.
A tornadic supercell with an Ef1 or Ef2 tornado struck the city of Kearney late afternoon. The aftermath wasn't pretty. I sure wanted to be out chasing but I was scheduled for work, and missed the entire historic event.
Power was out, but I did have the camera batteries charged. Geared up, with camera in hand after I got home from work. I took a few minutes during clean up that night to capture these incredible cloudscapes that were on the back side of the storms.
These were the final rays, the last light of the day. These clouds were truly some spectacular stormscape captures to end that day of severe weather!

Today, a researcher published a video showing a cat that likes to sit in implicit squares formed from circles. This reminded me of something I read a long time ago about cats liking to sit in circles on the floor. I made a hexagon (not being able to make a circle out of tape) in California and our cats did indeed like to sit in the middle of it, as shown by Nobuo, in November of 2014.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

僕は今年５４才になりますが、写真を始めた頃はまだ３０代でした。
その最初の数年間のうち、一度だけ、ニコンに公募したことがあります。
が、うざいことを言われたのでやめました。
それ以降、僕はいっさい公募していません。
なぜそうしなかったのか？

Main story

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。
