A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. ...

Psalm 23 King James Version

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

This shot reminds me of psalm 23, verse 2; "HE makes me lie down in green pastures, HE leads me beside quiet waters"

p.s. water was next to me but did not include it in the pic!

For macromondays, dualism theme (originally darkness theme)

In a Jewish funeral (a tradition followed by most Christian ones as well), Psalm 23 is recited:

"The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.

He has me lie down in green pastures,

He leads me beside the still waters.

He revives my soul;

He guides me on paths of righteousness for His glory.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I fear no harm,

For you are with me.

Your rod and your staff do comfort me.

You set a table in sight of my enemies;

You anoint my head with rich oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,

And I shall abide in the house of the Lord for ever."

The Psalms are the Hebrew hymnbook, the songs that inspired and encouraged amidst the fiercest opposition throughout history. Whether it was the Babylonian exile and the destruction of Solomon's great Temple (586 BCE), or the Roman Wars of the first century of the Common Era which led to the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem (70 CE). And down through the last 2,000 years until the Shoah and the near destruction of an entire people.

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..." This is not hyperbole, but the historical truth of a people. "I will fear no harm, For you are with me." Even death is defeated by Eternal Life. As a devout Jewish man who became the greatest Christian Apostle declared, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?"

As the Angel of Death was defeated in the first Pesach (the story of the escape from Egypt which gives true meaning to the term "Passover") so Death has no power over the faithful either. The grave cannot hold us. www.chabad.org/holidays/passover/pesach_cdo/aid/871715/je...

This Eternal Hope has sustained an entire people. As visitors to the Jewish section of the cemetery sit in this resting place (not the same one we saw yesterday by the way), they are bathed in light. But it is light filtered by shadows. In this life we often see more of the shadows, but shadows can only exist because there is the Light!

The greatest casualty is being forgotten.

Thumb Lake here in Michigan was foggy and lovely!

I was doing my morning reading and the sun came through the mini blinds and illuminated my bible. This verse came to mind especially with these troubled times.

"though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death; I will fear no evil..."

for a special friend

Went out this evening into the woods near my house. Ironically, despite the fact that it was getting darker by the minute and I was deliberately gathering 'spooky' photos, I felt totally safe and at peace. (I did stay vigilant though, just in case..!)

Sometimes we can all use a little Psalm 23...

UPDATE: In memory of Janet (Nature's Best) who has passed from this life of pain and sorrow to a place where the pastures are green, the flowers colorful, the birds are singing, the animals are tame and the waters are quiet. But most of all where never a tear is shed, because she is in the presence of the almighty GOD of all CREATION! Please read her profile.

Ahhh, this would be a great place to take my camera.

This is my "close my eyes and imagine nature" shot. I can see butterflies and birds but I can also see the lion and the lamb laying together in the grass under the warm sun as the water flows calmly down the stream.

Psalm 23

fürchte ich kein Unglück;

in memory of my mother in law who lost her very brief battle with cancer on July 19th...you are so very missed, our time was too short

thank you to the dear friends that gave me and my family support and comfort with your kind words and actions

From their first encounters with Christian missionaries, the North American Plains Indians used universal sign language to communicate Psalm 23 among tribes who spoke different oral languages. In 1894, Isabel Crawford, a Baptist missionary to the Kiowa Indians in Oklahoma, translated the Sign Version into literal English. Here is the Psalm 23 translation:

The Great Father above is a shepherd Chief.

I am His and with Him I want not.

He throws out to me a rope and the name of the rope is love and He draws me to where the grass is green and the water not dangerous, and I eat and lie down and am satisfied.

Sometimes my heart is very weak and falls down but

He lifts me up again and draws me into a good road.

His name is WONDERFUL.

Sometime, it may be very soon, it may be a long, long time.

He will draw me into a valley.

It is dark there, but I’ll be afraid not, for it is in between those mountains that the Shepherd Christ will meet me and the hunger that I have in my heart all through this life will be satisfied.

He gives me a staff to lean upon.

He spreads a table before me with all kinds of foods.

He puts His hand upon my head and all the “tired” is gone.

My cup He fills till it runs over.

What I tell is true.

I lie not.

These roads that are “away ahead” will stay with me through this life and after; and afterwards I will go to live in the great house and sit down with the Shepherd Chief forever.

~Isabel Crawford (Missionary to the Indians of the plains)

I have countless blessings in my life...way too many for me to list here.

My cup over flows I know that God is great

I know true freedom I do not worry about my fate

In faith and love I will never feel empty or dry

My God is the reason and I will tell you why

He is more powerful than you could ever comprehend

He has the ability to heal when the this world fails to mend

Pure love and compassion are tools of his trade

I will forever be thankful for in his image I'm made!

Our Daily Challenge: TOO MUCH or TOO MANY

Ever notice how darkness, evil, danger and doom seem so much more palpable than good things?

Hurricanes, sicknesses, crime and loss.

But is that strength the greatest strength?

I defy that seeming power. I celebrate tender love with my wife and children. Walks downtown for ice cream with friends. Powerful health. Turning the other cheek. Purity. Optimism in action.

Ainda que eu ande pelo vale da sombra da morte, não temeria mal algum, porque tu estas comigo.

Don’t fear those who kill the body

but cannot kill the soul

But fear Him who can throw them both

in hells burning coals

Don’t fear those who call evil good

who call darkness light

Don’t fear those who call murder right

their minds dark as night

LORD, you’re my shepherd

I shall not want

I fear no evil

You are with me

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I fear no evil

though they kill me

Don’t fear those who kill the body

but cannot kill the soul

But fear Him who can throw them both

in hells burning coals

Don’t fear those who hate what is right

who plot revolution

Don’t fear those who stir up strife

who love death and ruin

LORD, you’re my shepherd

I shall not want

I fear no evil

You are with me

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I fear no evil

though they kill me

Don’t fear those who kill the body

but cannot kill the soul

But fear Him who can throw them both

in hells burning coals

Don’t fear those who boast in what’s wrong

who love Karl Marx

Do not fear those who fan the flames

of hot violent sparks

LORD, you’re my shepherd

I shall not want

I fear no evil

You are with me

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I fear no evil

though they kill me

I wrote this song when Charlie Kirk was assassinated. It reminds me of these verses in the Book of Revelation: “I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.” “And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the Beast or his Image and had not received his Mark on their foreheads or their hands.”

The West will fall to totalitarianism due to the enemies within. Totalitarians like to systematically take out their enemies.

A psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk

through the darkest valley,

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

forever.
