Gordes is a commune in the Vaucluse département in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France.

The residents are known as Gordiens. The nearest big city is Avignon.

The territory of Gordes occupies some of "Les Monts de Vaucluse", a group of mountains and hills, part in the valley of the Calavon (a local river) also called the "Luberon Valley".

Provence landscape

I was leaving for my next location when this Intermodal train caught me off guard. I pulled this shot from the video. When I saw this tunnel I didn't think double stacks passed through it. Proved me wrong and I loved it!

Arles (Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence-Alpes-Cote-d'Azur): typical old street

In June we drove down to the French Riviera to see one of our kids who works there, and on the way back, we visited some wonderful Romanesque churches.

This was not really a seriously planned and prepared trip, and therefore most of the churches were closed and could only be photographed from the outside.

Likewise, I had to forfeit the Thoronet abbey because they do not allow tripods unless one has obtained a special clearance in advance, which I hadn’t. It was nevertheless very enjoyable and, as always, “We shall have to come back!”

The Saint-Martin church in the village of Volonne was built around Year 1000 in small apparel of unrefined and mostly unsquared local pebbles joined together byt lots of mortar. Only the cornerstones and those around the thin and tall windows were slightly more refined.

Inside, the thick columns are made of the same materials and the unadorned capitals are very archaic. Even the relieving arches use good sones only on the outside, the inside is made of blocage filling.

It is a very old church, and a large enough one, but built with very limited means and no refinement whatsoever. It has withstood the test of time, though...

These are the last three photos for this “Romanesque Provence” trip.

We even found a few sunflower fields during our stay in Provencce.

Enjoy your visit!

the very special spring colours in the Provence - already five years ago... (sigh)

To me, this is the best season to visit Provence….Unfortunately, I can’t go there this year…But, every night, when I lay down on my bed, I smell it thanks to the Lavender Pillow that I’ve got from one of the smallest villages in Provence…. To the memory of my lovely Provence, I initiated a new photo series: Missing Provence. Within that project, every day I will share a photo that I took from my previous trips….to send my regards and love there…to nice people embellishing everything, to lavender soul and to its magic… Here is the 17th one… I miss you Provence… BeNowMeHere, Provence, France, 2015 via 500px bit.ly/2ago93N

Sénanque Abbey lavender field in Provence, France.

The Notre-Dame de Senanque is a Cistercian abbey near the village of Gordes in the region of the Vaucluse in Provence. It was founded in 1148 under the patronage of the bishop of Cavaillon, and Raymond Berenger II, Count of Provence, and by Cistercian monks who came from Mazan Abbey in the Ardeche.

The monks who live at Sénanque grow lavender and tend honey bees for their livelihood.

The lavender fields in Provence start blooming in June and are being harvested around the middle of July. It is during this time that the scent of this aromatic flower start filling the air. In Provence, there are several regions where one can enjoy the sight of these lavender fields, and this abbey is one of the most visited sites.

Early morning in Provence

Traveling through the countryside in Provence you can see where Van Gogh got his inspiration.
