Guardian lions, also called Fu Dogs or Foo Dogs (powerful mythic protectors that have traditionally stood in front of Chinese imperial palaces, emperors' tombs and government offices).
The lions are generally present in pairs. To the intruder's right will be the male lion, with his right paw on a globe, representing his "feeling the pulse of the earth". To the intruder's left will be the female, essentially identical in appearance, but playing with her single cub with her left paw. The male of the pair is said to guard the structure, while the female fu dog protects those dwelling inside.

WAIANAE, Hawaii -- Command Sgt. Maj. T.J. Holland, the senior enlisted advisor assigned to 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, leads a group of Soldiers and family members during a beach cleanup event at Makua Beach. The Warrior Brigade Soldiers and family members teamed up with the Hawaii Department of State Parks, Protectors of Paradise, and the Director of Natural Land and Resources to conduct area beautification to clean up and remove vegetation around campsites.
“We have both leaders and Soldiers out here participating in this event today and they are all volunteers. No one was told to come out here or that they had to be a part of this. We like to look at ourselves as part of this community and many of our Soldiers like to come out here to visit and enjoy this beach on their time off. So, members of the Warrior Brigade decided to take the appropriate steps in helping to ensure it is kept in good condition,” said Command Sgt. Maj. T.J. Holland.

These massive 4m tall winged bulls with human heads were once placed at city entrance gates in Mesopotamia.
These insects were a little unusual. Most I've encountered either bolt the moment I get close or don't seem to care and let me shoot. These ran at first but would return to the same spot moments later. They soon stopped running and would sometimes turn to look at the lens when I brought it in close.
