I’m not going to let my SLR being nicked get in the way of a good opportunity… I’d forgotten how much hard work it is to use a compact when it’s cloudy. I’ve driven past the Angel dozens of times of the years but until now I’d never visited it. I was utterly impressed with its huge wingspan – doesn’t make for an easy composition though, especially without a wide angle lens. This is half a dozen shots joined up in Photoshop. Is that cheating??
El Convento de San Esteban quedó consagrado, casi desde sus comienzos, como centro de estudio y docencia de la Teología. En 1299 se establece en él el Estudio General de los Dominicos de España. En cambio, la enseñanza principal en la Universidad (fundada hacia 1218) era la de Derecho. La Teología entra en ella en el siglo XIV, cuando se crean cuatro cátedras de Teología. Dos de ellas las regentarán los dominicos de San Esteban. La progresión de la Teología en las aulas universitarias y en San Esteban será constante hasta bien doblado el siglo XVII.
A finales del siglo XV, superados los males de la claustra que había originado la Peste Negra (siglo XIV), que se caracterizó por la relajación de la vida religiosa, el convento inicia una época de esplendor.
Hay que recordar sobre todo a fray Diego de Deza (protector de Colón, preceptor del príncipe Juan, obispo de Palencia y arzobispo de Sevilla). En su tiempo se sitúa la venida de Cristóbal Colon a Salamanca y su estancia en el convento (hacia 1486-1487), donde encontró el apoyo que después le daría la Junta de Profesores salmantinos.
En el siglo XVI la universidad salmantina, de la mano de los grandes teólogos de San Esteban, adquirió su máximo prestigio. El más sobresaliente de todos sus Maestros fue fray Francisco de Vitoria (1483-1546), iniciador de la «Escuela de Salamanca», creador del Derecho Internacional y defensor de los derechos humanos, que aplicara a los indígenas de América en sus famosas Relecciones. Junto a él destaca fray Domingo de Soto (1495-1560), preclara inteligencia y teólogo principal en el concilio de Trento.
La nómina de maestros, catedráticos y obispos de este convento sería muy larga: el cardenal fray Juan Álvarez de Toledo, Melchor Cano, Juan de la Peña, Bartolomé de Carranza (arzobispo de Toledo), Diego de Chaves, Pedro de Sotomayor, Bartolomé de Medina, Mancio de Corpus Christi, Antonio de Hontiveros, Domingo Báñez, Pedro de Herrera, Francisco Araujo, etc.
