Today, Wednesday 2 October 2019, saw the conclusion of Operation Protector.

This is has been the policing operation for the Conservative Party Conference.

Chief Superintendent Wasim Chaudhry, Gold Commander in charge of policing during the Conservative Party Conference said:

“Over the past four days, Manchester has played host to the Conservative Party Conference, which saw just over 12,000 delegates visit our city.

“Policing this event presents a complex security and public order operation, requiring a high degree of multiagency partnership working and the highest levels of professionalism.

“As in previous years, there have been elements of protest throughout the conference period – notably on Sunday 29 September when around 13,000 people marched through the city.

“The vast majority of people attending protests did so peacefully and worked with us to ensure they could voice their opinions in a safe manner and with minimal disruption to others.

“On the occasions where individuals crossed the line we have taken positive action. It’s testament to our balanced policing approach that only four people have been arrested during the conference period.

“I want to thank those who live, work in or were visiting Manchester during the conference for their patience while our policing operation was in place.

“Throughout Operation Protector, officers have worked tirelessly to protect delegates, manage protests and keep our city safe.

“I am proud of all our officers and staff. They have performed their duties to the highest of standards and behaved in a professional and fair manner throughout.”

Chase Bank, Stop Funding #Line3 Tar Sands Pipeline! Community voices in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, spoke up to demand that Chase Bank stop funding the Line3 Pipeline. Per the Thomas Merton Center: Let’s tell Chase Bank to stop funding construction of the Line 3 tar sands pipeline across the treaty territory of the Anishinaabe people and the headwaters of the Mississippi River in northern Minnesota. We’ll be outside the Squirrel Hill branch with signs and leaflets to educate the public and demand that Chase Bank stop funding Line 3 before it’s too late.

If completed, Line 3 will transport almost one million barrels of dirty tar sands per day from Alberta, Canada to the shores of Lake Superior in Wisconsin.

Construction is already happening right now, and will require draining five Billion gallons of water from wetlands throughout Northern Minnesota and drilling under multiple rivers, including twice under the Mississippi. The influx of out of state pipeline workers and “man camps” has also intensified the existing crisis of human trafficking, assault, and missing and murdered indigenous women along the construction route.

Chase Bank is heavily invested in this destruction, and will decide on July 22nd whether to renew their loans to the pipeline project.

Line 3 is a project of the Enbridge Corporation, a Canadian multinational responsible for the largest inland oil spill in the US. Enbridge was also one of the companies building the Dakota Access Pipeline, which involved sustained, coordinated violence and military counterinsurgency tactics against peaceful water protectors and indigenous people by national guard, law enforcement, and private security mercenary firms working on behalf of Enbridge and their partners.

Beyond damage to vast areas of wetlands and the Mississippi River, current construction and future oil spills also threaten the Manoomin wild rice that is sacred to the Anishinaabe people. Enbridge is trying to force their dangerous and unnecessary pipeline through indigenous territories while the Anishinaabe people organize a movement to protect the water and sacred rice through everything from lawsuits to resistance camps in the path of the pipeline itself.

Call Chase Bank today and ask them to #DefundLine3.

HMS Protector, the Royal Navy’s Ice patrol Ship, began life as the MV Polarbjørn (Polar Bear), a Norwegian icebreaker and polar research vessel.

The ship, which is deployed on operations for 330 days a year, is capable of positioning to centremetric accuracy in winds of up to 80 knots and is fitted with an impressive array of specialist equipment, including: a hull mounted multi-beam echo sounder; a state-of-the-art survey motor boat (SMB), ‘James Caird IV’; an 8.5m ramped Work Boat, ‘Terra Nova’; 6 high-speed rigid inflatable and inflatable boats; 2 specialist tracked vehicles; 3 quad bikes and trailers, and a Land Rover.

HMS Protector is the Royal Navy’s ‘Swiss Army Knife’ – red, versatile, and always there when you need her.

HMS Protector deployed from Portsmouth for her second Austral summer deployment on 17 September 2012, travelling south via St Helena, Simon's Town in South Africa, and Tristan da Cunha before she arrived in Antarctica in December. The ship will complete four planned patrols of the British Antarctic Territory.

This deployments programme of work includes: providing direct support to a UK led multi-national Antarctic Treaty Inspection team; hosting and deploying a multi-national team responsible for ensuring that the stringent environmental site guidelines to Antarctic tour operators are being adhered to; landing and recovering British Antarctic Survey (BAS) scientists at ecologically important sites, and; surveying the poorly chartered waters around the Antarctic Peninsula to improve the navigational awareness and safety of other ships and mariners operating around the ‘Frozen Continent’.

The Ice Patrol Ship is the embodiment of the Royal Navy’s global reach, operational flexibility and the Service’s ability to sustain operations wherever and whenever that presence is required.

Yesterday, Sunday 29 September, saw Greater Manchester Police working to allow two major protests to take place while ensuring the rest of the city could carry on as normal.

The protests were timed to coincide with the Conservative Party Conference which is currently taking place in the city.

Polarbjørn has been chartered to the Royal Navy for three years from April 2011 as a temporary replacement for the ice patrol ship, HMS Endurance, and she has been renamed HMS Protector. Following her charter, she underwent a brief refit to ready her for her role within the Royal Navy; the main work involved the repositioning of the flight deck from the top of the superstructure to the stern, the installation of a multi-beam echo sounder for survey work, an overhaul of the engines and gearboxes, armament, and the carriage of the ancillary vessels and vehicles (survey boats, all-terrain vehicles) used in support of the British Antarctic Survey
