Hippos are recognizable by their barrel-shaped torsos, enormous mouths and teeth, nearly hairless bodies, stubby legs and great size, adults average 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) and 1,300 kg (2,900 lb) for males and females respectively, making them the largest species of land mammal after the 3 species of elephants and the white and Indian rhinoceros. It can easily outrun a human, being capable of reaching 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive and unpredictable creatures in the world and, as such, ranks among the most dangerous animals in Africa. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs, their closest living relatives are whales and porpoises.

In physical geography, a dune is a hill of sand built by eolian processes. Dunes are subject to different forms and sizes based on their interaction with the wind. Most kinds of dune are longer on the windward side where the sand is pushed up the dune, and a shorter "slip face" in the lee of the wind. The "valley" or trough between dunes is called a slack. A "dune field" is an area covered by extensive sand dunes. Large dune fields are known as ergs.

The children participated in a demonstration that simulated an oil spill in the water. Coco powder was mixed with cooking oil and then slowly poured in to cold water. The children then put their hands in the brown slick and the substance would stick to their hands. This activity simulated animals getting caught in the oil spill and how the oil caused them to sink and ultimately drown.
