Tourists getting down from a mini-bus inside the Eravikulam National Park. Once the bus reaches its final point, tourists can climb the winding road that climbs up the hillside (as can be seen with tourists at a higher point at the path) to go to higher locations in the park. A fog or mist is rolling down the hillside, to be followed by rain soon after. These are grasslands, with grass and the occasional trees. Eravikulam National Park is a relatively small national park located in the Idukki district of Kerala, being a part of the Western Ghats. Small because the area of the park is 97 sq. km, while traditionally the sanctuaries located in other parts of India can be many hundreds of sq. km or more. The park is interesting to visit, since it is located at a higher altitude, with the park being located at a height of around 2000 meter, on a hill plateau. The park has a number of animals, the most famous inhabitants of the park being the endangered Nilgiri Tahir (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) with a number of different predators also being found in the area. The park has 3 different regions of greenery - forests in some of the lower sections, grasslands and shrublands (located at higher levels and in rocky areas). Visitor vehicles are not allowed inside the park, with entry into the park being through mini-buses that are run by the park authorities. These buses take the visitor to a higher point, and from there visitors can climb higher on the turning and winding road and even come into contact with the Nilgiri Tahir who come close to the road.

I am on the Phi Phi Islands tour by speedboat, just off Phuket, Thailand. And having had a pretty long at Maya Bay for tourists to swim and snorkel, we are finally on our way out, thank goodness. Maya Bay was the location where the 1999 Hollywood movie The Beach was filmed. Over tourism and damage to the coral reefs and to the environment especially after this movie was released has led to the beaches around Maya Bay to be closed till 2021 at least. I have spoken about this in some detail earlier in this album. These notes, as well as notes about the Phi Phi Islands National Park appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures) Here we are leaving the high cliffs of Maya Bay behind and speeding away to our next destination. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

Im am on the speedboat tour around the Ag Phang Nga National Park, more commonly known as the James Bond Islands tour. We have made our first halt of the day in pouring rain- a this rather nondescript little cave called Ice Cream Cave or Koh Panak. Here is a refreshing bit of virgin rainforest around the mouth of the Ice Cream Cave. This little cave is part of the larger Ao Phang Nga National Park. This cluster of islands (we are visiting four today) is located in Phang Nga Province in southern Thailand, just off the coast of Phuket. The park includes the coastal sections of Mueang Phang Nga District and Takua Thung District. Most of the park consists of an area of the Strait of Malacca studded with numerous limestone tower karst islands. The best known of these islands is Khao Phing Kan, popularly known as the James Bond Island, because it was used as a location for the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun. We will get there shortly. (see subsequent pictures later in this album). (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

Walking back into the forest. Notice all the shaking. This is because I was standing on our boat, in order to be at about the same height level of the Jaguar, who was sitting on a riverside ledge. So each small rocking movement of the boat was amplified to me trying to stand up and hold the camera steady

The song and dance sequences beginning to pick up pace now, and the dances now are decidedly faster. This dance performed with foot long sticks resembles closely the Dandia dance performed in western India, notably in Gujarat. I am at the Tharu Cultural Show in Sauraha village in Chitwan, Nepal. The Tharu people are an ethnic group originating from southern foothill of the Himalayas and were the original inhabitants of Sauraha, which was initially a small village before it went on the tourist trail and developed into a rather touristy small town and a base for exploring the adjoining Chitwan National Park. The Tharu people largely live in the Terai region of Nepal. It is said that they have lived in the forests of Chitwan for hundreds of years. People from the Tharu community have rarely gone abroad for employment and are thus rather isolated from the rest of the world. In this isolation, they have developed and preserved an unique culture without any influence from mountain groups in Nepal or from external influences. (Sauraha, Chitwan, Nepal, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

Jenkins Gap is the saddle or gap between Mount Marshall and Compton Peak. The view from this overlook faces east between the gap in the two mountains revealing the rolling hills of Virginia's piedmont. Amid the piedmont, some spurs of the Blue Ridge are visible including Big Cobbler and Little Cobbler Mountains, Oventop, Long Mountain and Rattlesnake Mountain.

I am on a canoe on the East Rapti river in the Chitwan National Park in Nepal. Here is a lone Little Egret on the opposite back of the river- well, every bank is actually the opposite bank as we are sailing exactly in the middle of the river. It was very difficult to take pictures from the low and rather unsteady boat and the supremely cramped space I was squeezed into. This solitary Little Egret reminded me of a boat ride- though on a much more comfortable motorized boat- on the Kinabatangan River in Sabah in east Malaysia. The Little Egret is a species of small heron in the family Ardeidae. It is a white bird with a slender black beak, long black legs and, in the western race, yellow feet. As an aquatic bird, it feeds in shallow water and on land, consuming a variety of small creatures. It breeds colonially, often with other species of water birds, making a platform nest of sticks in a tree, bush or reed bed. A clutch of bluish-green eggs is laid and incubated by both parents. The young fledge at about six weeks of age. (Sauraha, Chitwan, Nepal, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

A screen shot from a YouTube video showing rhinos roaming around the streets of Sauraha, base for the Chitwan National Park in Nepal. My guide was mentioning about wild Rhinos walking freely down the streets of Sauraha. I thought that would be at night, as I had been warned about Hippos (no Rhinos there) in Naivasha in Kenya which come out to graze in the hotel grounds at night, but I was aghast to see this video of Rhinos out on the town streets in broad daylight! I did not spot any on the two days I was there, either by day or by night, which is why I had to make do with this screen shot from a YouTube video. The One-horned or Indian Rhinoceros is the most famous animal at Chitwan and you stand a good chance of seeing one on a safari. (notes on those critters later- see subsequent pictures later in this album). Chitwan also has significant populations of gharial crocodiles (more on those later as well). This screen shot is from footage which shows a pair of One- horned Rhinos strolling casually strolling down Sauraha's main street. (Sauraha, Chitwan, Nepal, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

Speeding along on the Andaman Sea and away from Ko Hong, where we had stopped awhile for a spot of kayaking through several small limestone caves. (see previous pictures earlier in this album). I am on the Ao Phang Nga National Park speedboat tour, known more popularly as the James Bond Island tour, Our next stop is probably James Bond Island itself- we will see shortly. One could take pictures only out of the rear of the speedboat as it speeds along. Taking pictures from elsewhere on the boat is difficult- unless you get right to the bow of the boat that part was packed with several tourists including that obnoxious Lebanese tourist I mentioned earlier (see previous pictures earlier in this album). The difficulty in photography is because of the high walls of the boat with narrow ventilator type window and bench type seating due to which even standing up to peer out of the ventilator windows is difficult. Not to mention the constant rocking and occasional bouncing from the boat moving along a great speed. Notes about the Ao Phang Nga National Park appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

Emerging on the other side through a crack in the rocks. The low cave we have entered at Ko Hong in the Pha Nga Bay on the Andaman Sea was a very short one. There is a pleasant lagoon or billabong on the other side which our kayak sails around before heading back through the same tunnel. Here is where things got a bit unnerving as it was high tide and the rising waters meant we had to go back lying down on the kayak. I am on the Ao Phang Nga National Park speedboat tour, known more popularly as the James Bond Island tour, and we have made our second halt for the day here, for a spot of kayaking through these caves. I have just endured a very unnerving transfer from my speedboat onto an incredibly unstable little rubber kayak and have just manged to find my bearings and sit down, almost on the floor of the boat, without tumbling into the Andaman Sea. We are taken through several of these low caves- these are low enough as it is, but high tide and the consequent rise in water levels made these caves even lower! Notes about the Ao Phang Nga National Park appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

"Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest national park in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia.

The national park was founded in 1949 and is situated in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The important north-south road connection, which passes through the national park area, connects the Croatian inland with the Adriatic coastal region.

The protected area extends over 296.85 square km (73,350 acres). About 90% of this area is part of Lika-Senj County, while the remaining 10% is part of Karlovac County.

In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register among the first natural sites worldwide. Each year, more than 1,200,000 visitors are recorded." (source: Wikipedia)

2 people walking inside the Okhla Bird Sanctuary in Noida, in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. A number of people come there to take images of birds and of nature. For wildlife, especially for birds, it is great to have a camera with a telephoto zoom lens, such as you can see with the photographer in this photo. The camera and lens are Canon lens. These people are flanked by greenery on both sides, with tall grass growing in a marsh like condition and a small earthern path in the middle on which a person can walk. The river Yamuna is very close by, lapping on the edges of the sanctuary.

I am on the Ao Phang Nga National Park speedboat tour- known more popularly as the James Bond Islands tour out of Phuket, Thailand, and we have stopped here at Ko Panyi for lunch. As I wander around the narrow alleys of Ko Panyi post lunch, as we still haves some spare time, I came across these two village residents- local ladies peeling a heap of clams. I stood by with a large dSLR hoping they would look at me so that I could ask if I could take their picture- but they were lost in their own little world and paid no attention to me. Tourists are probably a dime a dozen here on Ko Panyi. Almost all other stalls on this floating village were trinket or souvenir stalls, and all of them, barring one, were closed, as it was probably lunch- and prayer- time for the Moslem residents. More notes about Ko Panyi village as well as about the Ao Phang Nga National Park itself appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

After breakfast our hotel guard took me back to the wild Rhinos behind my hotel room. This time, he walked through the gap between two buildings directly to the spot where the Rhinos had been sitting earlier. And well, well, well, what do you know! Those Rhinos were back! We didn’t spot a single Rhino on a 4 hour jungle drive later in the day, but the day had started off pretty well with this fellow right inside our hotel grounds, just behind my hotel room. This is a wild animal but some Chinese guests- from the group I mentioned earlier and who had been brought here by another of the hotel staff- were soon all over him, especially one extremely foolish lady who went dangerously close to him for a shot with her cellphone, much to the alarm of the hotel staff. Thank goodness he is sitting and it will take him a while to get up, they reassured themselves while chiding the foolhardy Chinese lady. This is in Sauraha village, just outside the Chitwan National Park in Nepal. (Sauraha, Chitwan, Nepal, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
