There are no warning signs of early prostate cancer. Once a tumour causes the prostate gland to swell, or once cancer spreads beyond the prostate, the following symptoms may happen:

🔵 A frequent need to urinate, especially at night

🔵 Difficulty starting or stopping a stream of urine

🔵 A weak or interrupted urinary stream

🔵 Leaking of urine when laughing or coughing

🔵 Inability to urinate standing up

🔵 A painful or burning sensation during urination or ejaculation

🔵 Blood in urine or semen

These are not symptoms of cancer itself; instead, they are caused by the blockage from the cancer growth in the prostate.

I'm looking behind me now, back into Christmas Eve past. I woke up earlier than usual that day, Christmas Eve morning, from dreams of stormy seas and arctic winds, my boat rearing through heavy seas.

My guitar was my alarm clock, as it fell off the nearby berth onto the cabin sole. My sailboat was tied to the dock--just not safely, outside an ice storm raged. Santa wouldn't be flying into our moorage that night!

That was thirty years ago--1984, a night we took Christmas off on Tomahawk Island--and instead spent our day chopping away the ice build-up, saving boats that grew top heavy and threatened to "turn-turtle" and sink. Docks broke loose and we attached fresh chains, and used "come-alongs" to "zork" walkways that dangled like loose teeth in the currents back into place. My neighbor, Jim (James Walter Neal 3/5/42-12/17/14) and I spotted each other with lifelines on these perilous chores--nobody wanted to slip and fall into the icy Columbia! We were tied one to the other--if one of us went in, we counted on the other to drag the icy carcass home again, before we ended up in Astoria!

But that was 3 decades ago, like I said. The holidays are a time of hearing from old friends, catching up, shared memories. Sometimes though--you hear of someone's passing, right in the midst of the holiday season, too. It hardly seems fair.

I remember dragging chain with Jim. I can't help but think of Jacob Marley and how that image Dickens conjured up resonates. We are chained together by time, by proximity, by our boats, and our dreams, by the river, and by capricous fortune. I got my diagnosis of prostate cancer about the same time as Jim heard similar news. I went for surgery, but Jim always had confidence in his skills and chose to battle the disease using Chinese herbs and nutrition. Friends, crewmates, neighbors, occasionally rivals and irritants--all our lifelines intertwined until a knot slips or fastener breaks. Riding the tides and the storms, until the current carries us home.

When you can't grow your own, you make one and encourage those that aren't facially folicly challenged to grow a 'stache for Movember. :{)

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer.

On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

This past Sunday was Father's Day and I spent the morning volunteering my services for the event. Here are some of my shots of the day. More can be seen of the Halifax event and others from around Canada at Prostate Cancer Canada's Flickr account. For more information on prostate cancer or how to make a donation visit their website.

Prostate check? They can stick that up their arse!

Seriously though, prostate cancer is nasty stuff. If you're a bloke over 50, make sure you're getting tested regularly.

Christos and Daniel "suit up" for their dads this Father's Day! Yes, they DID run in those suits!

After a long day at work, I fell asleep on the couch, waking at 11:50pm realising I hadn’t taken my shot yet.

But I made it, check the exif if you must … 11:59PM …. just by a whisker.

And with whisker’s in mind, todays image is brought to you by Movember, a month where “selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts.

So if you see someone sporting a hirsute upper lip this month, do stop, stare and even point ... but don’t laugh ... make sure you applaud & get out your wallet to help the selfless Mo Bro in his efforts to raise money for prostate cancer & depression.

Okay guys - you know I would do this if I could but since I can't I throw down the gauntlet and challenge you to grow a moustache for Movember!

I first learned of Movember last year and that it's a event for the month of November to help raise awareness about prostate cancer. Great idea for a wonderful cause. Show us your 'stache! If you can't do that for whatever reason, at least spread the word!

There is no switch that turns one off and on another. No magic potion that transforms me.

Both sides exist at all times.

It's because both are the same. They are both me.

Results were good after the latest bloodtest yesterday. BP high though ~ 200 over something.

The hormone therapy is kicking in:

leaving me shrivelled, drying my skin.

I'm wasted, but don't drop me in the bin.

A drug induced male menopause,

with sexless thoughts I have to change the laws

and fight my corner and my cause.

A beautiful phrase, a kind word or a sad song

and tears flow down, hard and long,

but my love keeps me positive, happy, strong.

Things aren't going smooth, unfortunately,

I need a TURP before radiotherapy

To help my flow, to ease my pee

I can't say what the consequences will be

I'm going to have to just wait and see

hoping that we can smile when I am free

as we look back drinking our green tea.

These days, the oncologists use a Gleason score for diagnosing and staging prostate cancer. It helps the oncologists assess the extent and aggressiveness of the disease as well as to determine the treatment for the patient.

Comments: The second week is ending and I see some progress, but slower hair growth than I am used to.

"The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember.

Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days."

During September 2018 - these guys (and gal) undertook various sponsored events for the Derby Willows Walking Football Group (Tuesdays) to raise £500 for Prostate Cancer Research

I've been 'given' another day

To lie in peace under the x-ray

Apparently I've put on some weight

Must be all those cakes I've ate.

The oncologist explained the dose,

It's that extra layer of fat I suppose,

The beam loses strength as it passes through,

So an extra dose is due.

And then I have to wait patiently

To see what the radiation has done to me.

Killed the cancer stone dead?

Or will it be back to haunt me instead?

So it's down to me now: to live at my pace

And love my love with all my passion and grace.
