Here is a mystery object. No doubt someone out there will be able to tell us what it is. One thing I think we can be certain of, it is not a ship's propeller. It would be a large ship in any case, but the blades are all the wrong shape for that. Some kind of fan?

My best guess would be a wind turbine of some sort. Perhaps one that sits on top of a building. There was a government building in Hobart several years ago that had a small wind turbine array on its roof. But being in the Roaring 40s, these turbines failed, and nearly blew onto the street below. Perhaps this is one of those. I really don't know.

You think winter is your ally? You merely adopted the snow. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see green grass until I was already a man.

This is based on a real thing, believe it or not.

Wat Arun takes its name from Aruna, the Indian god of the dawn, hence the common name The Temple of Dawn. Locally called Wat Chaeng or Wat Arun. It is an ancient temple in Bangkok located on the Maenam Chao Phraya River, dating back to the Ayutthaya period. In the Thonburi period, it used to be called Wat Makok. When the king of Thonburi moved the capital from Krung Si Ayutthaya to Krung Thonburi, he also brought the Emerald Buddha from Vientiane to Wat Arun, before it was later transferred to Wat Phra Kaew, in the Grand Palace. In the Rattanakosin period, Wat Arun was restored and renamed Wat Arun Ratchatharam by King Rama II. As an important temple in Thailand's history, there are many unique attractions at Wat Arun in Bangkok, most notably the central prang, a stupa-like pagoda inlaid with colorful glazed porcelain tiles and shells, giant statues, the ordination hall, bell tower and many Buddha statues. The imposing Khmer-style prang or tower is 104 meters high and decorated with pieces of porcelain that were used as ballast by boats coming from China. It is surrounded by four smaller prangs. Construction of the prangs was started by King Rama II and completed by King Rama IV. The central balcony is an ideal place to look out over the river to the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Wat Arun is a temple that rises from the Chao Phraya River's banks. The Chao Phraya is the major river in Thailand. It flows through Bangkok and then into the Gulf of Thailand. On many old European maps, the river is named the Mae Nam, the Thai word for motherly water or river. Long-tail boats are often used for transport passengers accros the river. A long-tail boat uses an automotive engine. The driveshaft must be extended by several metres of metal rod to properly position the propeller, giving the boat its name and distinct appearance. Advantages to the inboard engine with a long driveshaft include keeping the engine relatively dry. There is much variation among these boats, some have evolved from traditional craft types. As Wat Arun is a Buddhist temple, visitors must wear culturally appropriate clothing to visit. In front of the high Khmer-style prang there two notable ancient Chinese guardian sculptures. Steep stairs lead to the top, from where there are amazing views of the Chao Phraya River.

Lokaal genaamd Wat Chaeng of Wat Arun.

Engine of the American Airlines Flagship Detroit known as the Wright R-1820 Cyclone 9. It is an American radial engine developed by Curtiss-Wright, widely used on aircraft in the 1930s through 1950s. The R-1820 Cyclone 9 represented a further development of the Wright P-2 engine dating back to 1925 and featured a greater displacement along with a host of other improvements. The R-1820 was at the heart of many famous aircraft including early Douglas airliners (the prototype DC-1, the DC-2, the first civil versions of the DC-3 (as seen here), and the limited-production DC-5), every wartime example of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and Douglas SBD Dauntless bombers, the early versions of the Polikarpov I-16 fighter (as the M-25), and the Piasecki H-21 helicopter.
