Sexton Self-Propelled Artillery Gun on display at the Canadian War Museum located in the City of Ottawa, Ontario Canada

 

The 25pdr SP, tracked, Sexton[a] was a Canadian-designed self-propelled artillery vehicle of the Second World War. It was based on Canadian-built derivatives of the American M3 Lee and M4 Sherman tank chassis. Canada had set up to produce the Ram tank using the M3 chassis and Grizzly (a copy of the M4) to complement US medium tank production; when Sherman production in the US expanded and supply was assured, it was decided in 1943 to switch the Canadian production lines to produce the Sexton to give the British Army a mobile gun using their 87.6 mm (3.45 in) Ordnance QF 25-pounder gun-howitzer for commonality with towed guns. The Sexton could fire either HE shell or an armour-piercing shell. It found use in the Canadian, British, and other British Commonwealth armies, as well as other countries. After the war, a number of Sextons and Grizzlies were sold to Portugal, which used them into the 1980s.

Propelling northbound past Kerrs Miniture Railway in Arbroath is 25068 having collected a VDA van (loaded with finished food cans) and 2 mineral wagon (loaded with scrap metal) from the nearby Metal box siding at Elliot. The driver is in the cab next to the van whilst the guard was in the brake van leading towards Arbroath.

Note - Projectile has an explosive centre : )

56118 propels its load of imported steel coil into the unloading siding at the Avesta group steelworks at Panteg on 5th July 1996. By this time rail working had become infrequent so made an effort to get a shot before the service petered out. This train was a special and ran as a 6Z70 from Goole. Once in the siding the coil was unloaded with the large forklift near the rear of the train.

 

The former British Steel site which had cast billets for the production of stainless steel was taken over by Avesta Sheffield Ltd in 1992. The plant which employed 600 at the time continued to produced stainless coil but with the closure of the melting shop on 12 December 1996 the site was scaled back. The processing of coil continued and I assume this trainload was from the Avesta steelworks in Sweden. The end of the plant finally came about in March 2004 with the loss of 116 job. A school now occupies the site which can trace its steelmaking roots back to 1886.

 

The Loadhaul 56 found itself in the steel melting pot shortly after it was cut in December 2009.

 

Not the best of day weather wise and not suited to the Pentax 6 x 7 camera with if depth of field issues as apparent here.

Having arrived from London Kings Cross with 1D16, LNER Class 91 no. 91101, 'Flying Scotsman', stands at the rear of set NL17 and DVT no. 82225 at Leeds on 3rd June 2021.

 

The set would work back to London Kings Cross as 1A40.

A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa propels the support coach into platform 4 after turning on the triangle. Working from Dereham to Southall. A superb sleek design. Removing the lower valances for ease of maintenance during the war is a minor blemish, they looked even better with it fitted.

TransPennine Express liveried class 68 no. 68030, 'Black Douglas', sits in the North Yorkshire town of Scarborough prior to propelling a mk5a set to York as 1T68 on 17th June 2021.

DB Cargo Class 60 locomotive 60015 propels its train of oil tankers from Lindsey oil refinery into the sidings at Kingsbury.

Having arrived at Whitemoor Yard, March from Wisbech, the 6S93 train of vans loaded with 'Five Alive' fruit juice was being propelled into the yard by Railfreight Class 47/0 47016. The train would later continue to Deanside, Glasgow. Note the brake van at the rear of the train used by the member of train staff during the trip along the Wisbech branch, where several road crossings had to be negotiated.

In stunning evening light this ATR76 with the 1706 departure from Guernsey coming into Manchester Airport on 28th September 2025

Following some tricky shunting at Holyhead, 37689 is at the front again. The stock is being propelled into one of the holding sidings on 19 June 2004.

The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (M270 MLRS) is an armored, self-propelled, multiple rocket launcher; a type of rocket artillery.

 

Since the first M270s were delivered to the U.S. Army in 1983, the MLRS has been adopted by several NATO countries. Some 1,300 M270 systems have been manufactured in the United States and in Europe, along with more than 700,000 rockets.

 

I wanted to update this for years. Glad I finally did. Now fits whole rockets into the pod where as before it didn't so i totally rebuilt that area. Lots of changes throughout both externally and internally, it's basically been totally rebuilt.

 

Shame you can't see a really cool feature in this light but the cab has red lighting inside if wanted. Looks great in darker lighting. I'll try get another photo of that later.

91107 Skyfall propels 1A09 07.15 Leeds - King's Cross towards Offord Cluny, south of Huntingdon.

 

After photographing 90021 on the UK Railtours' charter a little way south of the Offords, the five of us stood around chatting about what was running (or not!) - including what was happening with the southbound sleeper (still stuck at Morpeth) and which 91s were out. 91106 had failed on 1Y00 04.00 York - King's Cross with the train being terminated at Newark, and Realtime Trains did not show an allocation for its return north, 1D05 08.03 to Leeds - although it was on its way... A message to someone in the know confirmed, however, it was an "Azuma".

 

91101 and 91107 were the other 91s out today, and it was mentioned that the latter was on its way south with 1A09, although still some time away. Conversation turned to other things - in particular, what to do for the rest of the morning (while waiting for the sleeper empty stock, which wouldn't arrive until 1pm at the earliest) - and then we began to walk back to the road and go our separate ways.

 

Just before the last two went in different directions to get a bite to eat, it was remembered about 1A09 - and we hurried through the village to this spot. As we began walking down the path towards the line, 1A09 was approaching Conington (a few miles the other side of Huntingdon), but there was just time to get into position and tweak camera settings before it burst under the bridge. As can be seen, the fog of earlier had almost completely cleared now.

Canadian Pacific (CP) RDC-4 no. 9250 and Canadian National (CN) class EP-59a no. 6734 and ET-59a no. 6742 are seen on display near the turntable at Exporail. The CN cars are of a class of 18 motor and trailer cars built for commuter service on the Deux-Montagnes Line. Amazingly, aside from the four that were lost to accidents and other incidents during their service lives, all of this class have been preserved at museums throughout North America!
