ROG 37884 Propels the Scotrail 318 EMU out of Platform 3 at Kilmarnock into Bonnyton depot for refubishing. No doubt the loco will be back in a month or so to take it back to Yorker depot. Nice to see a few enthusiasts on the platform!

taken at Shuttleworths 'drive in' airshow

This is the 'pulled back' shot, as wide as possible to capture the scene. The 2 x 20s in the foreground are shunting the S Stock into the building very slowly. These 2 locos were on the rear of the train on arrival, whilst the pair to the right were on the front.

Loco 47714 can be seen in the background, still in the early Anglia livery. An unidentified class 08 is adjacent to the S Stock. There is a second class 08 on the far right, slightly obscured by the trees.

The Sun is just starting to break through the dark sky, not many minutes before this shot, there was a very heavy shower of rain.

Heading back to the loading point at Jóźwin in EL2-06 after depositing another load of lignite at the Pątnów power station on the KWB Konin brown coal railway in central Poland.

The driver is seeing the railway line before him using the CCTV screen as the train is propelling in the return direction. But still, he can see most of the signals from his cab and he has a version of AWS, he must cancel out the signals on approach by pressing down on the deadmans peddle or hitting a button on the driving desk, this, like in the UK, is signalled by a warning bell at the driving desk. Otherwise the brake air reservoirs will dump and the brakes will go into emergency stop. 9th March 2023 .

This was not an easy photo to achieve, the main problem being the intense rattling and the motion of the loco felt inside of the cab. A higher than normal ISO has been used, 1250 I am generally out of my comfort zone past 400! A low aperture, f2.8 and relatively low shutter at 1/60th has also been used with a 24mm lens, and I had to press the camera hard up against the wall of the cab for stability. Of course, looking at the motion of the cab interior as the shutter was pressed it did not look like this would work but it did. Luckily, the cab construction is rigid.

This "jet propelled boat" works by putting a tiny bit of methylated spirits in the reservoir which feeds through a wick and by some miracle of surface tension makes it move...the instructions are quite complicated ..including soaking off any floating impurities off the water surface with a newspaper

Juvenile Antillean Kingfisher (knotta birdus) ~ Sarasota County, Florida

West coast Florida birders were treated to great looks at this Antillean Kingfisher. They are normally found in the Lesser Antilles and a few other islands. What was most striking to me about the bird was its large head relative to his body which serves an important purpose. The added weight allows the kingfisher to get deeper below the surface where larger prey can be found. The weight also helps the hunting as gravity propels the bird to simply fall into the water at great speeds with minimal wing movement to not scare the fish.

Thanx for Viewin, Favin, and Commentin on my Stream!

73109 and 73133 passing lots of happy commuters at Clapham Junction on the 18.00 Waterloo - Poole. 20 June 1989.

I was watching this juvenile on the fence, ready to shoot because I knew he would fly to the burrow. A golfer got too close to the fence looking for his ball and I got lucky! Looks very weird and has a seriously evil look! I edited out the fence.

I wasn't as close as it looks.

Part of the fuschia series I posted a couple of months ago. This shot was a hand held, taken vertically - with a bit of photoshop to boost the colours. I like the fact that none of it is perfectly in focus - it seems to add movement to the 'propellor'.

I'm getting far to old and slow to keep up with these beautiful flyers! Lovely to see them though!

Swifts are migratory throughout their range. They arrive in the UK in the last week of April or early May and stay only long enough to breed.

Autumn migration begins in late July or early August. The onset of the migration is believed to be triggered by the lack of insects high in the air.

Few swifts are left in September.

Swifts that breed in the UK migrate through France and Spain to spend their winter in Africa, south of the Sahara, where they follow the rains to take advantage of rapid changes in insect populations.

While many immature birds return to the breeding grounds in the spring - some will remain in Africa.

An amazing feat of flight and endurance for such small birds!
