The fourth Earl of Morton in Edinburgh used to own this room and building where today the High Street Hostel operates. His portrait in this nook is near a brief text that tells how he was an early advocate of the Maiden, a forerunner to the bigger version that Dr. Guillotine perfected in France a few generations later. Owing to the Earl's part in a nefarious design on the life of one of the royals, though, he ended up at the business end of the falling blade himself. After about 200 years of service the preferred British form of capital punishment changed to hanging. The National Museum of Scotland has set up (one example? facsimile? of) the Maiden in their gallery pertaining to the 1500s and 1600s.
