At VFS Digital Design, we teach agile project management practices throughout the entire year. And what better way to refresh everyone's recollection of the 9 knowledge areas (scope, time, cost, human resources, procurement, risk, quality, communication and integration) than with a game!
The students were divided into four teams and briefed on a project they had just "won”. Using index cards and post-it notes the students were asked to record the goals, objectives, work breakdown structure including time allotted for major tasks, resources, and the risks of their respective projects and post them on the wall.

A backyard cottage addition in the bay area. There's a living room, bedroom, kitchenette, and bath all in about 400 sq. ft. To make this little retreat feel much more spacious than it is, we incorporated high ceilings, lots of natural light, and a strong connection between indoors and out.
I'm going to lead a couple of mini-workshops on visual notetaking at RefreshPhilly tonight. These notes are my preparation for tonight. The first thing I'm going to do is give a little drawing instruction, using Ed Emberly as inspiration.

If you're going to pick a project management technique that appeals to polar bears, SCRUM at least has semi-appealing terminology: scrum master, poker, sprints…
Despite this Mr Fox, wasn't exactly expecting a miracle. Not only has Mrs Polar Bear been legally declared unmanageable, but she also has several successful coups on her CV.
She didn't seem to care about his lovingly crafted backlog. In fact, she spent most the kick-off meeting shuffling poker cards and gnawing on her pen.
Things did pick up when she realized she was going to get to write her own post-it notes, but when the concept of unit-less time cropped up, things turned nasty.
WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Fortunately Mr Fox was quick off the mark, and escaped with only a glancing head injury.
A week into their project, whereas Mr Fox had grown increasingly twitchy, Mrs PB was taking things in her stride. Moving post-it notes, and monitoring her progress with a burn down chart had apparently significantly improved her bean eating performance.
The less said about the status of the blog, the better……
It goes without saying that this story in no way reflects Mr Tom's own opinions or experiences, and does not in anyway satirize real life events

This is a set of instructions for drawing a cartoon character.
Any ideas what to name her?
This how-to was inspired by Ed Emberley who has created wonderful step-by-step drawing guides.
My hope is that people will learn to kick ass using visual thinking by following the course of someone who uses visual thinking over a sustained period.
If these notes help you progress on your ass-kicking journey, please let me know!

I had no idea what scrum or agile development was at the time, but this configuration of tables and chairs in the hallway of the 3rd floor of Microsoft's Building 114 just made sense to me.
I found these tables abandoned or stuck in hallways from other floors and dragged them here with my new team members. Then I ordered comfortable chairs from Microsoft's internal portal. We were set and took off and developed like mad.
The person, my friend, in the foreground found our environment to her liking, quiet, convenient yet friendly and joined us; as many travelers or consultants did from time to time. This worked for many reasons and gave MS full-timers the ability to find and interact with us without having to search around much.
Due to the location, our rules were straight forward; low tones, quiet, leave nothing in the room when leaving, push in your chair, and police your area. We had one phone for 18 + people. It rarely rang. The person being sought was nearly always there.
Twice in several months there was a slight disagreement about how open or closed the blinds should be but that environment worked very well for the team. We launched our project on time of course.
I absolutely loved working with them.
A use case is to show you how Kanban Board and Time Tracking can support software development teams.
