It's late afternoon on a brisk autumn day in November 33008 and a two train meet is taking place at Assembly Street in Columbia, Souh Carolina. The conductor for the outgoing train is ready to perform his run-by inspection of the incoming train. NS 8397 was a GE C40-8W built in 1993 for Conrail as CR 6191 and sold to Progress Rail in 2019.

Class 69 locomotives don't look like modern locomotives. Yet they are only build since the year 2020. But they are in fact rebuild class 56 locomotives, giving the old bodyshell a completely new inside. As the successful class 66 loco's were not complaint to the current safety standards and there was a need for affordable, powerful diesel locomotives, it was decided to rebuild old locomotives with basically the inside components of a class 66 locomotives. And that's how the 69's came to be.

On the 12th of november 2025 one of the class 69 loco's, the 69008, passed me with some concrete blocks, working the 6O47 to Tonbridge.

I've visited the Ulan line in New South wales on three previous occasions, but never had a drone with me. Access to the various bridges across the Goulburn River has never been straightforward, but a drone solves that problem!

The engineer of CP 5035 South accelerates his train back up to track speed after lifting a pair of gondolas from the house track. One of my goals this year was to shoot a train on CP's line from Lloydminster to Wilkie SK. The storm in the background coupled with an epic sized sucker hole made for some amazing light.

KCS 3915 was sold to Progress Rail and is now PRLX 3915.

1656 was one of the few remaining TFM SD70MACS. Athearn had it as one of their HO SD70MAC models. It will now become part of Metra's fleet of SD70MACHs.

A loaded export iron ore train has just departed Spencer Jct yard bound for Whyalla, South Australia, on Monday 4 September 2023. Aurizon's GWB104 leads the consist with GWB 102 and 105, seen in the distance, bringing up the rear in distributed power mode.

This is my 6000th upload on Flickr. At the time I posted my 5000th upload, not quite four years ago, I was averaging 450 uploads a year, but this has now dropped to around 250 a year since then.

There are several reason for this. I rarely go out with the camera these days. the local scene no longer appeals and I've not done much travelling of late, so there's little 'new' material. Plenty of slides and negs still to scan, but I've been slack in that department.

I think also that Flickr has lost a lot of its appeal and is losing the fight against other social media platforms. I can generate a hundred times the interest and comments from posting an image on Facebook. It also appears that Flickr's algorithms and counters are totally stuffed these days.

Of course on FB it quickly gets lost in the sands of time and a deluge of other pixels, whereas Flickr still does a pretty good job as an archive, especially from a personal point of view.

When the wild pea blossoms arrive in Northern California, I know summer has officially arrived. The beautiful wildflowers are commonplace along the sides of many roads, and some rail lines. At Alta, the brilliant flowers add some beauty to this scene of UP 9049 hauling an eastbound empty grain train.

As the summer sun sets, Ex- CSX, PRLX 627 along with other CW46AC’s sits awaiting departure for PRLX eventually; Ex- CN, ACWR 5521 sits coupled with 2 other SD60F’s waiting for ACW to begin major interior cab work and as-needed engine repair before starting service.

Had a great day bouncing around the STL Metro area and the icing on the cake was a rare CN daytime local. CN locals are generally nighttime movements Sun-Fri making a Saturday afternoon almost unheard of. Right at the end of the day, we ended up at the south end of the KCS East St Louis Yard and found a new string of stored power. The KCS SD70Ace's had been in storage for quite some time but the yellow Progress Rail SD70AceT-4 are new additions. Odd to see this "modern" power sidelined while the older SD70 - especially in Illinois Central paint(!) - continues to soldier on.

On February 12, 2012, I grabbed a blue hour shot of a crew change on Norfolk Southern Railway in the capitol city of South Carolina. They were kind enough to perform the crew change right beside a soccer field at the University of South Carolina health center where the light helped light up the train.

Norfolk Southern 2630 was an EMD SD70M built for NS in 2004. It was sold to Progress Rail in 2020 as PRLX 2630.

On New Year’s Day 2020, the old and new came together for a brief moment in Pomona, CA. On the left, new EMD F125 933 leads an eastbound Metrolink train towards San Bernardino. The 933 had just entered service, having completed its break-in period the month prior. Meanwhile on the right, Metrolink veteran F59PHR 873 pushes its train to Los Angeles, having traversed this route countless times. 873 was built in 1993 as an F59PH, and was rebuilt in the late 2000s as an F59PHR. Today, the 933 powers on while the 873 sits in a yard outside Los Angeles Union Station, stored and awaiting its fate. It was hard to see that future at the time the photo was taken as the F59s were the workhorses of Metrolink for decades, but all things must come to an end and I’m glad to have been able to capture moments like this before it was too late.

After spending the day out, I decided to check Pig's Eye to see what could be in store for the evening CP trains, and saw CP 7018 & 7019 paired by the fuel racks, and heard they were for 243. After waiting for them to build their train, the chase began. Here they are as they pass over the New Brighton diamond with the MNNR, in pure perfect golden hour

I'm not a fan of high light, but at Wirrappa last weekend some high cloud was doing a good job of diffusing the harsh sun.

A San Bernardino to Mission Viejo train 807 rolls through Yorba Linda with SCAX 941 providing the power for the five car mixed equipment train. This Metrolink was the only train that had the locomotive on the correct end, on my morning expedition above the tracks of the San Bernardino Subdivision.

The Canyon Crawler is a fascinating operation to catch. The crawler travels from Roseville to Portola, where the crew overnights, and returns to Roseville the next day. The train switches Sierra Pacific at Quincy Junction. and any cars at Portola. Here, a loaded crawler returns to Roseville, as it passes through Pulga, CA.

The secret is out, and the Canadian internet groups imploded after the release of five SD70ACU's painted to honor the Canadian and United States Armed Forces. Thanks to the team at CP for making this possible, as well as putting on a great ceremony at the Calgary headquarters on Remembrance Day 2019. The 5 meter barrier around the units was a nice touch, as every fan managed to get lots of sunny shots without having to use a people filter.

It's going to be interesting to shoot these units on the road, with the variations in dark and light paint each one will present challenges to the photographer, but its bette rthen dirty red!
