Brighter Bites is a collaborative effort designed to improve access to healthy, affordable food and provide nutrition education. The University of Texas School of Public Health, KIPP Schools, the Houston Food Bank and Texas Children's Hospital have partnered to offer the 16-week program to third-grade children enrolled at KIPP Explore Academy and their parents. As you can see from the photos, those healthy kale smoothies are a hit!

One of my favourite toys to get when I was a young child was hot wheels. These toys allowed me to use my imagination and offered hours of entertainment.
As I reflected on my childhood years, I decided on this chair design not only because I loved Hotwheels, but also because the chair represents a good friendship I had as a child. I had a friend when I was very little and we always played together. I was his only friend. Other children did not want to play with him because he was burned in a fire and his physical appearance was different, but we hung around together all the time. When I moved away he gave me a hot wheels car – his favourite one. I no longer have that car, but I was able to find one that was almost the same which I keep on my computer and it reminds me of him all the time.
I hope that someone can enjoy this chair as much as I enjoyed working on it. Check out all the play-features of this chair! Under the seat, the drawer pulls out to reveal a Hot-wheels lunch kit, racing themed crayons, pencils and erasers, and a fantastic collection of little racing cars!

For building an educated society, one should not overlook the education level of parents, neighbors and adult members of the community because they are influential for the education of children. Considering the fact Lodhie Foundation was looking for a program which make the young students teach their parents, neighbors and adult community members. Young Students of DIL Schools taught their illiterate parents or adult community members in evening time. The students educated their parents/ adult community members to read, write and understand, now they can communicate and understand like an educated person and both parents and students feel pride. Lodhie Foundation appreciated such a unique initiative of DIL Foundation and gifted solar Powered LED Lights to the students who taught their parents and the community adults who learned from their juniors without feeling any shame.
Talcahuano, Jueves 15 de octubre 2015. Con un simulacro de incendio de viviendas, que incluyó el rescate de víctimas atrapadas por escombros, se lanzó el plan Piloto de Reducción de Riesgos de Desastre en la población Juan González Huerta-Alianza del sector Higueras de Talcahuano en el marco del Programa Quiero Mi Barrio del Ministerio de Vivienda y Urbanismo.
La acción de emergencia que fue liderada por los vecinos del lugar a través del Consejo Vecinal de Desarrollo, contó con la presencia del Subsecretario de Vivienda y Urbanismo, Jaime Romero, el seremi del Minvu en Biobío, Jaime Arévalo, la Directora Regional de Serviu, María Luz Gajardo y el alcalde de Talcahuano, Gastón Saavedra.
En la etapa de diagnóstico del proyecto, que se encuentra en ejecución desde marzo pasado, los habitantes del barrio señalaron el riesgo de incendio de viviendas como la principal amenaza debido a la antigüedad de las casas, 520 en total, la falta de mantención de las mismas, sistemas eléctricos domiciliarios antiguos, el diseño de las viviendas tipo pabellón que no cuentan con cortafuegos y la nula accesibilidad para vehículos de emergencia.
“Chile es un país que debe aprender a vivir el riesgo y habitar en el riesgo. Cuando no son eventos sísmicos o tsunamis asociados a los mismos, tenemos bosques inmensos donde se producen incendios forestales y tenemos un cordón montañoso que representa una dimensión del riesgo importante. Por tanto en función de los distintos aprendizajes que hemos tenido con las distintas emergencias en los últimos años, siete en los últimos 16 meses desde que asumimos el gobierno, fuimos tomando la decisión de poder incorporar elementos de seguridad en el trabajo en los barrios. Hoy vimos un simulacro de incendio, pero lo que rescatamos es la participación de los vecinos y vecinas y la voluntad de querer educarse y de colocarse a disposición del resto de las personas que viven en la comuna de Talcahuano”, aseguró el subsecretario Jaime Romero.
El plan de reducción de riesgo de desastre en el barrio Juan González Huerta- Alianza se focaliza en la educación a través de la prevención y la respuesta a un evento crítico por parte de los vecinos y vecinas aprovechando el modelo operativo y la metodología del Programa Quiero mi Barrio, durante un período de 3 años.
Uno de los atributos para incluir al barrio Juan González Huerta- Alianza en el proyecto es que en el municipio de Talcahuano está localizado el único Departamento de Gestión Integral de Riesgos de Desastre del país, que lo convierte en un gobierno local preparado y que producto del terremoto y tsunami del 2010 se especializó y, por ende, tiene mucho conocimiento del tema y resulta relevante explorar metodologías de cómo trabajar con la comunidad a escala barrial.
El Presidente del Consejo Vecinal de Desarrollo del Barrio Juan González- Alianza, Alejandro Torres, valoró la iniciativa piloto a nivel regional. “Todo lo que signifique riesgo y la prevención de tal situación, que ojalá nunca ocurra en nuestra población, lo importante es que los vecinos tengan las nociones básicas de cómo enfrentar este tipo de eventos ya nos servirá a todos. Hace más de 50 años que vivimos en el barrio y mientras más seguridad se tenga va a ser mejor la calidad de vida de los vecinos y vecinas”.
Con este plan se busca que los vecinos y vecinas del sector sepan responder ante una emergencia de manera autónoma. De esta manera se estará aportando en el cumplimiento del Protocolo Sendai, que se suscribió este año en Japón, y que es un compromiso voluntario de todos los países miembros del Sistema de Naciones Unidas para implementar acciones en este sentido.
El proyecto piloto, que incluye también a barrios de Valparaíso, Constitución y Valdivia, tiene como objetivo modelar territorios, definiendo zonas de amenazas y vulnerabilidades tanto físicas como sociales. El proyecto es parte de una iniciativa conjunta que se desarrolla con los municipios respectivos, la comunidad y la ONEMI, entre otros actores.
