World Chambers Congress Day 2: Business Programme

Page from the theatre programme for a production of "Madame Pompadour" at the Hippodrome Theatre, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in February 1931. This page list the cast members.

Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "Madame Pompadour" played at the Hippodrome Theatre in Keighley for six nights (with a Saturday matinee) from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th February 1931. The musical play had music by Leo Fall and lyrics by Harry Graham. The KAODS production was produced by Avalon Collard, with musical director Joseph Harker.

The story is an elaborate fiction of the real life of the eighteenth century's Marquise de Pompadour, a woman with an open approach to her lovers who included the King of France, Louis XV. Events open at the Tavern of the Nine Muses, where activist poet Joseph Calicot (played by Ernest Marsden) sings of the Pompadour's (May Rainford) unhealthy influence in court, little knowing that later she is amongst the audience. Also present is the Comte D'Estrades, Rene (Bertram Agar) , who has left his wife, Madeleine, at home to pursue some illicit fun at the inn. He gets together with Pompadour, but their love-making is interrupted by the arrival of the Minister of Police, Maurepas (John Crabtree), determined to expose Pompadour's dalliances. In the end, both Rene and Calicot are arrested and Rene is ordered to serve in the Pompadour's bodyguard.

The action moves to Versailles, where the Pompadour and Rene are able to continue their fling, but there are two interruptions. Firstly the arrival of Madeleine (Edith Robson), who it turns out is the Pompadour's half-sister, and then the arrival of the King (Alfred Cockcroft) himself, who on discovering Rene orders him to be shot at dawn. But Maurepas mistakenly believes Calicot to be the object of the Pompadour's desire and she is soon able to dissuade the King of the truth of this, while managing to orchestrate a reunion for Rene and Madeleine. And all ends happily.

Other members of the cast included Frank Hudson, Verney Shuttleworth, Alan Petty, Thomas Dibb, Norman Boyes, Alec Hardy, and Peggy Eaton. The dancing mistress was Lorna Brett. Scenery was provided by Herbert Oldroyd of Batley.

The 52-page programme was printed by The Keighley Printers Ltd. of High Street, Keighley. It measures approximately 185mm by 250mm. The programme was part of an anonymous donation made in 2022.
