Page from the theatre programme for a production of "The Desert Song" at the Hippodrome Theatre, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in February 1934. This page includes an overview of the storyline.
Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "The Desert Song" played at the Hippodrome Theatre in Keighley for six nights from Monday 5th to Saturday 10th February 1934. The musical's book and lyrics were by Otto Harbech, Oscar Hammerstein II and Frank Mandel, with music by Sigmund Romberg. The KAODS production was produced by Frank Rydon, with musical director Joseph Harker and stage manager Harry W. Carter. The Honorary President of the Society was the Mayor of Keighley, Councillor Ernest Whalley.
The story is set in French Morocco, where the occupying French Foreign Legion are at constant battle with the native Riffs. Lieutenant Pierre Birabeau (played by Arthur Day) becomes disillusioned with his cruel commander, due to the latter's needless cruelty towards the Riffs. While playing dumb as the Lieutenant, Pierre adopts a new persona as the undercover Red Shadow, who becomes leader of the Riffs. Meanwhile, Margot Bonvalet (Hylda Saville-Smith) arrives at the French fortress, intending to marry Captain Paul Fontaine (Oswald Hill). When she hears of the exploits of the Red Shadow, she grows secretly to admire him, not knowing that Pierre has always adored her from afar. Margot is kidnapped by the Red Shadow and taken to the palace of Ali Ben Ali (Abraham P. Scarborough). Pierre's father, General Birabeau (Ernest Marsden) has assumed control of the French troops and confronts the Red Shadow at the palace, not realising that he is in fact his son. The Red Shadow refuses to fight the General and thus loses face with the Riffs and ends up exiled to the desert. Finally the General realises his error but then news reaches the camp that the Red Shadow has been 'killed' by none other than Lieutenant Pierre Birabeau. Margot learns the truth and ends up in the arms of both the Red Shadow and Pierre, since they are one and the same person.
The musical play also starred Frank Smith, John H. Crabtree, Albert E. Shepherd, Jack Morrall, Phyllis Turner, William Frankland, Norah Spencer, Thomas Dibb, Norman Boyes, Margaret Best, Edna Whitaker and Eleanor Rowe. Miss Francis Davis was in charge of choreography.
