Front cover from the theatre programme for a production of the musical "Zip Goes a Million" at the Ritz Cinema, Keighley, staged by Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in October 1959. The cover was designed by society secretary Alan Petty.

Keighley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's production of "Zip Goes a Million" played at the Ritz Cinema in Keighley for six nights (and a Saturday matinee) from Monday 19th to Saturday 24th October 1959. It had music by George Posford and lyrics by Eric Maschwitz, based on an idea by Winchell Smith and Byron Ogley.

This was the second major Keighley Amateurs production to be staged at the Ritz, following the closure of the Hippodrome Theatre in 1956.

The story revolves around Lancashire window cleaner Percy Piggott (played by Keith Marsden), who travels to America to receive a vast inheritance from an uncle who struck it rich in the Texas oilfields. But there are conditions attached - in order to receive the full eight million dollars he must (a) spend one million dollars before the year is through, (b) not enter any matrimonial engagements and (c) not let anyone know what he is up to. Spending the money seems straightforward when he is approached by Lilac and Buddy Delaney (Elsie Scott and Edwin Smith) to invest in their new show, but when the show is a success his investment reaps rewards. He is in love with Sally Whittle (Frances Fairclough), the daughter of his former employer, Motty Whittle (Geoffrey Rundle), but despite she and her father travelling to America to be with him, he has to behave coolly toward her. Further misadventures occur, including Percy buying various luxury cars and a yacht which is subsequently damaged on a reef with all key players onboard, being crowned King of the island of Raratonga then being kidnapped, and ultimately having all his friends rally round him to keep him financially afloat when what he actually needs to do is run out of money. But at the very last moment he fulfills his challenges, receives the inheritance, and gets the girl!

Other members of the cast included Johnny O'Connell, Brian Middleton, Reuben P. Drake, Janet Chadwick, Joan Grayston, Stanley Peckover, David Mitchell, Dennis P. Smith, George Jackson, Jim Brown, Tony Cross and Ronald Sands. It was produced by Frank Rydon, the musical director was R. Lewis Scargill and the choreographer was Irene Ogden.

The 44-page programme was printed by The Keighley Printers Ltd. on High Street. The programme is part of the Joy Rundle Collection, donated by Jane Eaman and Mark Rundle in 2023.
