Presentación del Programa Nacional de Derechos Humanos 2014 – 2018.

A shot of me programming the new Lego Cricket system - developed in the MediaLab, by Mitch Resnick, who is behind. We built a singing dancing Nessie.

I know, I know.

She’s been doing an after-school and summer programs as a volunteer with a local school that I attended in 2nd grade, which has majority poor, working-class migrant kids (even did 30 years ago, when I was did)—many of whom have severe difficulties learning to read in English due to Spanish being their primary language at home. I’ve seen her pour her heart (and wallet) into building up a library for children to visit—and where they get to build their own personal libraries—something many of them lack at home. Reading has been fundamental to my own success and happiness, and I think Liz’s work to help kids in SLO get a head-start on reading will pay dividends down the road.

What they will do with the money:

In her own words: “In the nine plus years since retiring as a children's librarian, I volunteer at Hawthorne School in San Luis Obispo. Many of our children are immigrants, some are English learners, and the school is 50% Latino. Because I work primarily with the special needs children, I have come to love and appreciate many children whose challenges are great: poverty, few fathers, some homeless children, and some with autism, etc. In my 38 years as a children's librarian, I rarely encountered such children! But, just as they are gifts to me, I want to give back to them, helping them build their own libraries and see that reading is cool. So I've turned our home (four blocks from Hawthorne) into a book/art treasure house for children, with separate areas for Latino books, sports, humor, biography, mythology, animals, and on and on. All of the third through sixth grade classes come to our house for a field trip each year, including summer visits. They leave carrying all the books (15 to 30 some) they want to keep. I scour library books sales, etc. for gently used books that I know children will love, but there are some books that really get kids reading, particularly the "Big Nate" and the "Wimpy Kid" series, that seldom show up. If I received a Compassion Grant, for the first time I could buy new paperbacks of these books, along with "Flush," "Hoot" and "Chomp," hilarious stories by Carl Hiaasen that highlight the environment, easier Rick Riordan stories about "Percy Jackson" and books that help us see the gift in people with handicaps, like Palacio's "Wonder" and "Becoming Naomi Leon" by Pam Munoz Ryan. Wondrous books expand children's worlds, give them hope as well as pleasure, help them to appreciate and accept differences in others and themselves, and let them know that they can be so much more than they once thought possible. Thank you so much for considering a supporting grant for this joyous labor of love!”

Why they are qualified and why their project would qualify for TPP funding:

When I thought of someone spreading compassion in the world, Liz came to mind—with her work she’s been doing for about six years, totally unfunded. The project is about supporting a local school that lacks resources to help their kids read stories centered around powerful environmental and social justice themes, and the power of individuals to make a difference in the world.

High School Programs Summer Link to College: As one of VIP's most popular programs, Summer Link to College has continued to provide students with a taste of college life. Summer Link is a five-day college experience. Summer Link is a five-day college experience. Students entering their junior year of high school live on the DU campus and participate in a number of college activities. During the summer of 2007, forty-two students from several local high schools joined eleven Summer Link coordinators for an exciting week at the University of Denver. This past summer, VIP expanded the program to include high school students from Abraham Lincoln, Denver Center for International Studies, Denver School of Science and Technology, Denver West, and Pinnacle Charter School. To make Summer Link a true college experience, students participate in a mixture of academic and social activities. For the academic portion of the program, students attended one of three classes taught by DU professors, English, Natural Science, or Web Design. In addition to taking classes, students also participated in workshops that included: presentation skills, health and fitness, and relationships. The Summer Link students also had opportunities to attend cultural events. The most popular event was dinner at Buca Di Beppo, a local Italian restaurant, and attendance at a theatre production of "The Little Mermaid."Based on the response of the students, Summer Link was particularly special this past summer due to the eclectic mix of different schools. Having a college experience with people from different schools allowed the students to create new friendships, which have strengthened throughout the school year. The program has helped to develop these friendships by offering workshops for the students during the school year. This upcoming summer, the program will expand to include additional students and new workshops. To insure its success, the Summer Link program will continue to look for ways to create the ultimate college experiece for students in the future. âPablo Moreno and Ana Rodriguez
