In the fall of 2012, 17 women who were identified as emerging leaders in sports traveled to the United States where they met their respective leading American female counterparts. Their task throughout the three-week mentorship was to create an action plan detailing how they could develop sports-related programs in their communities to help empower women and girls. Participants included women who administer or manage sports programs; manage and/or coach sports teams; work in mid-to-upper management roles for corporations with a sports-related focus; work at non-governmental organizations (NGOs); and specialize in sports marketing, and sports journalism and mass communication.
Their task throughout the three-week mentorship was to create an action plan that would detail how they could develop sports-related programs in their communities to help empower women and girls.
The program officially concluded on October 4, 2012 with a special luncheon at the State Department, but the work for these women is just beginning. Now their task is to put their action plans to work with the support of new networks, mentors and friends.
