1st Lady Yumi Hogan hosts NGA Spouses Program by Tom Nappi at Annapolis, Maryland

Syracuse 20/20 has helped to launch a new program called Book Buddies at Seymour Elementary School. Syracuse 20/20 is partnering with the Near Westside Initiative, the Literacy Coalition and Seymour School. This program is part of 20/20's support of the Campaign for Grade Level Reading initiative and the goal of having all children reading on grade level by the 3rd grade.

The program is a pilot program for the remainder of the 2013-14 school year and will be launched as a year-round program in the fall. There are 20 first grade and second grade students and 25 volunteers that are part of the program. Each student reads to the volunteers two times a week (Mondays and Wednesdays) for a half hour. Volunteers commit to supporting two students from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Volunteers work one-on-one with students and support the students with the goal of improving reading fluency and comprehension.

A special thank you to four Syracuse 20/20 Board members who have signed up to be weekly volunteers. Without the support of Kathy Murphy, Larry Bousquet, Mike Nash and Ginny Carmody the program would not have started.

For the 3rd straight year, we were happy to receive help as part of the ProQuest Library Volunteer Program. The project this year was to merge the Kresge material that was returned from the Univeristy of Michigan-Flint after ten years off site. These items were merged into the existing collections at the Kresge Library. We had help from wonderful volunteers from ProQuest as part of their Library Volunteer Program. Through this program, they send volunteers to local libraries to assist with projects like this.

His name is down there on the lower right somewhere; and yes, they do graduate a fair number of people every year, why do you ask?

Council continues to support our Financial Assistance Program because it directly benefits local community groups who would not normally qualify for any government assistance.

This year we are distributed $84,689 across 78 projects throughout our community.

Projects range from recreational activities, painting classes, theatre productions and dance and music therapy, to cultural and teaching children environmentally sustainable practices, mental health support groups, support for people with disabilities, and arts programs.

The projects reflect the diversity of community life in our City and support a wide range of issues of concern to Council and our residents.

They are also a sign that as a community, we are working together to ensure that for many people our City of Canterbury is truly a great place to live and work.
