The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.
hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

During a Native American history-themed sleepover at the National Archives in Washington, DC, 101 kids and their grown-ups spent the night enjoying history-related activities, learning from special guests actor Martin Sensmeier, Jim Thorpe historians Bob Wheeler and Flo Ridlon, and Native American storyteller Perry Ground. After sleeping over night in the Rotunda, participants enjoyed a pancake breakfast made by the Archivist of the United States, David S. Ferriero, on October 14, 2018.
The North Charleston Police Department implemented Project S.T.A.N.D (Stop and Take A New Direction) aimed at not just arresting low level narcotics dealers with little or no prior criminal history but to go a step further and help those involved in the activity change their lives for the better. This is program aimed at reducing recidivism through working on all aspects of the criminals’ lives.
This project was the focus of a Dateline NBC special entitled “Intersection” which aired on March 14, 2013.

The CSG Community came together for Thanksgiving on Tuesday, Nov. 25. The program featured musical performances from all four divisions and remarks from Head of School Jennifer Ciccarelli and Student Speaker Aisha Iftikhar '15.
As part of the Dean’s Business Scholar program, students have been actively involved with a development project in collaboration with the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency. Lloyd Clarke, Business Advisor, New York State Small Business Development Center visited students this spring semester to guide them in this joint project.
Lloyd has 21 years of experience as an SBDC business advisor specializing in business and marketing plans. He has conducted many business seminars using motivational techniques that encourage entrepreneurs. His prior experience as plant manager, director of distribution, and terminal manager for Continental Trailways brings a wealth of practical knowledge to his counseling skills.
Lloyd has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Baruch College and several post graduate Certificates in Communications and Multimedia from N.Y.U.

I have to say this was my favorite shot from Missouri. Oh it might not be a nice pretty landscape, or a national monument, but it took me back to a place I have been, an innocent time in which entering that baseball stadium felt like the best moment in the world, with the torn stub in one hand, and mitt in the other hoping that tonight would be the night you catch a foul ball. And as you leave the turnstiles, the gentleman yells out "Programs!", a magazine dedicated to this night, this game, and the memories you will make.

U.S. Naval War College (NWC) hosted its 2019 commencement ceremony on Dewey Field in Newport, R.I., June 14. The graduating class of 2019 included 318 resident students of the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, federal civilian employees and 110 international students. Additionally, 1,080 students completed coursework through NWC’s College of Distance Education programs.

Ponce, PR – El anexo del Teatro La Perla fue el escenario de una ceremonia muy emotiva, donde miembros de la unidad 276 de Mantenimiento de la Reserva del Ejército de Estados Unidos en Puerto Rico, recibieron el galardón “Bienvenido a Casa Soldado-Ciudadano” por un trabajo de excelencia realizado en el teatro de guerra en Irak.
Este es un premio ofrecido por el Congreso de Estados Unidos exclusivamente a soldados reservistas movilizados en la guerra contra el Terrorismo con el cual se reconoce el valor y sacrificio de estos soldados en el teatro de guerra.
Los 150 reservistas de la unidad 276, con base de operaciones en Juana Diaz, estuvieron movilizados por un año y tuvieron la misión de recoger e inspeccionar equipo militar de unidades próximas a relocalizarse o retirarse de la zona, como parte de la retirada de tropas ordenada por el Presidente Obama.
“Me siento bien orgullosa de ser parte de esta actividad y de ser una esposa de un soldado luchando por la libertad que necesitamos todos los días, en toda ocasión y en todo momento”, indicó Rosa Medina Rodriguez, esposa del Especialista Guillermo Loperena, luego de explicar la dificultad que atravesó su familia en la ausencia de su esposo.
La Sra. Medina agradeció a la Reserva del Ejército por el apoyo que brindan a través de todos sus programas y ayudas a familiares de soldados movilizados y por esta actividad en que se reconoce la labor que realizan los soldados ciudadanos. “Fue una ceremonia muy bonita, hecha en un momento muy especial”, dijo el especialista Loperena, quien cuenta con 4 años de experiencia militar, refiriéndose al décimo aniversario de los ataques del 11 de septiembre y que marcó el inicio de la nueva gran generación del 9/11 en el ejército.
En la misma estuvieron presentes altos líderes de la Reserva del Ejército en Puerto Rico, así como también altos funcionarios del gobierno local quienes elogiaron a los presentes.

Engineering the path to success

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles District Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Steven Sigloch introduced Lisa Ruben of United Way at the National Women’s History Month program at the district headquarters, March 27, by saying that today, women outnumber men in colleges and universities.
Ruben’s talk focused on United Way’s participation in education, especially in the Los Angeles Unified School District, stating that “education is the best pathway out of poverty.” She emphasized that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is a major part of the way to economic growth.
She went on to describe various ways schools, families and communities play important parts in the success of children and in keeping them in school. Ruben also listed how United Way works toward this, including research, grants and partnering with school officials.
Ruben was followed by a musical program by Makoto Taiko, a Japanese drum ensemble, including District employee Jane Grandon, located in Pasadena. Some of the group members construct their own drums.
The Makoto Taiko website (www.makototaiko.org/) states, “Makoto is a fundamental character trait that includes such higher qualities as sincerity, truthfulness, altruism, reliability, and integrity. Makoto has a broad, yet profound, meaning that cannot be summarized in just one or two words because its meaning varies according to specific context. A person has makoto when his actions are in alignment with his words and ideals, and these words emulate the basic foundation of our drumming.”
The Women’s History Month program concluded with the second annual Women of the Los Angeles District Art Show. Displays included textiles, ceramic works and paintings by women and family members of the Los Angeles District team.

1- How was the local ABV Coordinator/staff and the support provided in-country?
Beatriz was awesome. She was there to help with anything I needed, and offered support for the duration of my trip. She showed me around Cusco, helped plan weekend trips, and introduced me to my family, program, and to other volunteers.
2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced? Name 2
Program: The kindergarten was very well equipped and staffed.
Host Family: My family ate very big lunches, and the dinner was very light, which was an adjustment.
Country: The weather can change from frizzing to hot within minutes.
3- What was the most challenging thing you experienced?
Program: Sometimes being left alone with the whole class of three-year old-kids.
Host Family: Trying to finish the huge lunch they’d give me!
Country: Constantly being approached in the street by people trying to sell stuff.
4- Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations)
1. Warm clothing for nighttime.
2. Extra toilet paper (lots of public bathrooms not have it)
3. Good shoes for walking and hiking.
4. Bug spray for Machupicchu
5.1-Other things volunteers should know before coming here: (that’s not in the orientation guide)
a. Come with an open mind.
b. Cusco is full of things to do, so be proactive.
c. You may want to buy your own extra food to supplement.
d. Make use of your weekends with trips.
6- Personal Paragraph about the experience:
I had a good experience with A Broader View. I love that I could combine travel with volunteering. I got to see many sights and had a rewarding experience volunteering.
7- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security, friendliness, quality others:
My host family was so welcoming and accommodating. I’m vegetarian, and my host mom would even make special tofu for me. I felt very at home.
8- What was your favorite memory of this trip?
Program: Bonding with the kids and teachers at the school.
Host Family: Watching soccer together and talking together during meals.
Country: All of the things I got to see in Cusco and Machupicchu.
9- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling?
They were so helpful, and always responded to calls and emails superb fast.

It worked well with me.
