Making Dumplings Is Like A Surgical Procedure
( #Guangzhou, #China. #Photograph by #GustavoThomas © 2019)
Flight training in Stearmans at Randolph Field, San Antonio Texas, in 1943. One student has successfully taken-off and is happily on his way. The other student was not so skilled in his take-off procedures and fell to a common fate: the “ground wheel” followed by “departing the prepared surface”, followed by too-heavy breaking and lastly, the dreaded “nose-over.” He has failed his ride and his instructor is furious...but not as furious as the ground crew who has to recover the aircraft and fix it!
The “Kaydet”, Stearman Model 75, is a 2-seat military trainer built in the USA from the mid-1930‘s through early ‘40s as an initial flight trainer for pilots heading off to WWII. Widely known as the “Stearman”, over 9800 were built of all model types and thousands are still flying today in airshows and as “warbirds”. It’s also one of the most featured biplane aircraft in movies. The aircraft is configured so that the student with full instrumentation sits in front, and their instructor in back with duplicate flight controls.
The Army Air Corps used the nomenclature “PT” for primary trainer. The PT-17 version had a Continental R-670-5 power plant, with a horsepower varying from 210 to 240 at 2,200 rpm. Pilots nicknamed it, “The Washing Machine,” as it washed-out many students from the program. The US Navy version was all-yellow and is known as the N2S.
I have had the pleasure of a 30 minute ride in one and the instructor let me fly for 15 minutes at cruising altitude. It’s beautiful to handle, and the open cockpit is the most enjoyable way to fly!

Have I just discovered the greatest photographer who ever lived?
First of all, thank you so much to all those who wished me well after my surgical procedure the other day. The past few days have not been without pain, but at least I know I’m on the path to recovery. I now await laboratory tests to give me an all clear. Friday was pretty much a wipe out for me, but yesterday I was feeling so much better.
My list of photographic inspirations is very long indeed (I don’t say that to boast, merely to highlight the huge number of incredible photographers who have left their mark on the world). While waiting in hospital on Thursday I re-read a contemporary little classic by British photographer Sophie Howarth, “The Mindful Photographer” (2022), and then on Friday I went back over David Ulrich’s “Zen Camera” (2018) www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/51932732331/in/album-72....
I was particularly interested in the work of his inspiring teacher Minor White (1908-1996). www.icp.org/browse/archive/objects/exhibition-poster-for-...
Sitting up in bed in the evening I was looking at my copy of the German retrospective of the work of Saul Leiter (1923-2013). This catalogue was from the Hamburg show in 2012. Remember that Saul Leiter was “discovered” in his 80s – that’s Saul second from the right on the bottom row of this collage.
Well, yesterday I came across some photographs by the Italian/French photographer, Frank Horvat. His career spanned more than seven decades and he was taking photographs until his 92nd year. There were some striking photo journalistic images (which made me think of Frank Capa); and then some black and white street photos that reminded me of Henri Cartier-Bresson (a huge influence on Horvat as it turned out); then some fashion photographs that reminded me of Helmut Newton, no surprise then to learn they were very good friends. Perhaps most astounding of all to me was the echo of fine art in his portrait series that mimicked the great Dutch and Italian masters, and even Goya.
All these influences, all these styles, and yet a very distinctive poetic voice with a camera. As H C-B once said, “Photography is not documentation but intuition, a poetic experience.”
www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/52053453050/in/album-72...
When we talk about “reading” a photograph we mean it literally. There is a linguistic and syntactical structure to a good photograph, and the very best photographers are like the best poets - except their “words” are images.
I’ve given you just a tiny taste of the work of Frank Horvat (1928-2020) in the collage here. But let me tell you, the more you examine his work as a whole, the artistic brilliancy of it, his almost supernatural understanding of light, the sheer volume, the more likely you will think like me: Frank Horvat might just have been the greatest photographer who ever lived. [Of course if you suggest the Chinese photographer Fan Ho, you won’t get any disagreement from me either.]
I won’t give you much biographical detail here. This is information you can discover for yourself. But he was cosmopolitan to the core. Born in 1928 to a Jewish family at Abbazia, Italy, his father a physician from Hungary and his mother a psychiatrist from Vienna (where else?). He studied fine art in Milan and travelled extensively. He had a unique understanding of India, as indeed does his very close friend, the great British photographer Don McCullin. Professionally he spent most of his life working in France.
Horvat’s work spanned so many eras of change in photography and he seemed to adapt to each with a flourish. Black and white or colour, he was a master of both. And when digital came along, though he was an “old man” by this stage, he took to it with relish, enjoying the processing of his images as much as taking them with his trusty 35mm Leicas. And he had a fine sense of humour, especially in his later photo montages.
The one indispensable resource for the work of Frank Horvat is the website: HORVATLAND. www.horvatland.com/WEB/main.htm
It’s all in there (warts and all). Like a wonderful dark wood of discovery as his camera leads us through Dante’s Inferno (at times), through Purgatorio to Paradiso. Once you learn how to navigate this site, you won’t want to leave.
For a general introduction on YouTube let me recommend:
IMMORTALIZING Life's Essence: The PHOTOGRAPHIC POETRY of FRANK HORVAT
www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW3dN3mLTOY
In a very zen-like statement, Frank Horvat reminded us that photography is like poetry (haikus) in so much as it is about knowing that, "photography is the art of not pushing the button."

Last wolf picture for a while: a wolf (gently) bites another wolf's paw, in the procedure of showing submission. I don't know exactly about these behaviors, but this is what I suppose.
Picture taken in the zoo of Zürich
There is a common dental procedure that nearly every dentist will tell you is completely safe, despite the fact that scientists have been warning of its dangers for more than 100 years.
What is this dental procedure?
The root canal.
Root-canaled teeth are essentially “dead” teeth that can become silent incubators for highly toxic anaerobic bacteria that can, under certain conditions, make their way into your bloodstream to cause a number of serious medical conditions—many not appearing until decades later.
Most of these toxic teeth feel and look fine for many years, which make their role in systemic disease even harder to trace back.
Sadly, the vast majority of dentists are oblivious to the serious potential health risks they are exposing their patients to, risks that persist for the rest of their patients’ lives.
The American Dental Association claims root canals have been proven safe, but they have NO published data or actual research to substantiate this claim.
Dr. Weston Price, regarded by many as the greatest dentist of all time, who, more than a century ago, made the connection between root-canaled teeth and disease.
Dr. Price was a dentist and researcher who traveled the world to study the teeth, bones, and diets of native populations living without the “benefit” of modern food. Around the year 1900, Price had been treating persistent root canal infections and became suspicious that root-canaled teeth always remained infected, in spite of treatments. Then one day, he recommended to a woman, wheelchair bound for six years, to have her root canal tooth extracted, even though it appeared to be fine.
She agreed, so he extracted her tooth and then implanted it under the skin of a rabbit. The rabbit amazingly developed the same crippling arthritis as the woman and died from the infection 10 days later. But the woman, now free of the toxic tooth, immediately recovered from her arthritis and could now walk without even the assistance of a cane.
Price discovered that it’s mechanically impossible to sterilize a root-canaled (e.g. root-filled) tooth. He then went on to show that many chronic degenerative diseases originate from root-filled teeth—the most frequent being heart and circulatory diseases. He actually found 16 different causative bacterial agents for these conditions. But there were also strong correlations between root-filled teeth and diseases of the joints, brain and nervous system. Dr. Price went on to write two groundbreaking books in 1922 detailing his research into the link between dental pathology and chronic illness. Unfortunately, his work was deliberately buried for 70 years, until finally one endodontist named George Meinig recognized the importance of Price’s work and sought to explain the truth.
Dr. Meinig, a native of Chicago, was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II before moving to Hollywood to become a dentist for the stars. He eventually became one of the founding members of the American Association of Endodontists (root canal specialists).
In the 1990s, he spent 18 months immersed in Dr. Price’s research. In June of 1993, Dr. Meinig published the book Root Canal Cover-Up, which continues to be the most comprehensive reference on this topic today.
Your teeth are made of the hardest substances in your body.
In the middle of each tooth is the pulp chamber, a soft living inner structure that houses blood vessels and nerves. Surrounding the pulp chamber is the dentin, which is made of living cells that secrete a hard mineral substance. The outermost and hardest layer of your tooth is the white enamel, which encases the dentin.
The roots of each tooth descend into your jawbone and are held in place by the periodontal ligament. In dental school, dentists are taught that each tooth has one to four major canals. However, there are accessory canals that are never mentioned. Literally miles of them!
Just as your body has large blood vessels that branch down into very small capillaries, each of your teeth has a maze of very tiny tubules that, if stretched out, would extend for three miles. Weston Price identified as many as 75 separate accessory canals in a single central incisor (front tooth). Microscopic organisms regularly move in and around these tubules, like gophers in underground tunnels.
When a dentist performs a root canal, he or she hollows out the tooth, then fills the hollow chamber with a substance (called guttapercha), which cuts off the tooth from its blood supply, so fluid can no longer circulate through the tooth. But the maze of tiny tubules remains. And bacteria, cut off from their food supply, hide out in these tunnels where they are remarkably safe from antibiotics and your own body’s immune defenses.
Under the stresses of oxygen and nutrient deprivation, these formerly friendly organisms morph into stronger, more virulent anaerobes that produce a variety of potent toxins. What were once ordinary, friendly oral bacteria mutate into highly toxic pathogens lurking in the tubules of the dead tooth, just awaiting an opportunity to spread.
No amount of sterilization has been found effective in reaching these tubules—and just about every single root-canaled tooth has been found colonized by these bacteria, especially around the apex and in the periodontal ligament. Oftentimes, the infection extends down into the jawbone where it creates cavitations—areas of necrotic tissue in the jawbone itself.
Cavitations are areas of unhealed bone, often accompanied by pockets of infected tissue and gangrene. Sometimes they form after a tooth extraction (such as a wisdom tooth extraction), but they can also follow a root canal. According to Weston Price Foundation, in the records of 5,000 surgical cavitation cleanings, only two were found healed.
And all of this occurs with few, if any, accompanying symptoms. So you may have an abscessed dead tooth and not know it. This focal infection in the immediate area of the root-canaled tooth is bad enough, but the damage doesn’t stop there.
As long as your immune system remains strong, any bacteria that stray away from the infected tooth are captured and destroyed. But once your immune system is weakened by something like an accident or illness or other trauma, your immune system may be unable to keep the infection in check.
These bacteria can migrate out into surrounding tissues by hitching a ride into your blood stream, where they are transported to new locations to set up camp. The new location can be any organ or gland or tissue.
Dr. Price was able to transfer diseases harbored by humans to rabbits, by implanting fragments of root-canaled teeth, as mentioned above. He found that root canal fragments from a person who had suffered a heart attack, when implanted into a rabbit, would cause a heart attack in the rabbit within a few weeks.
He discovered he could transfer heart disease to the rabbit 100 percent of the time! Other diseases were more than 80 percent transferable by this method. Nearly every chronic degenerative disease has been linked with root canals, including:
Heart disease
Kidney disease
Arthritis, joint, and rheumatic diseases
Neurological diseases (including ALS and MS)
Autoimmune diseases (Lupus and more)
There may also be a cancer connection. Dr. Robert Jones, a researcher of the relationship between root canals and breast cancer, found an extremely high correlation between root canals and breast cancer. He claims to have found the following correlations in a five-year study of 300 breast cancer cases:
93 percent of women with breast cancer had root canals
7 percent had other oral pathology
Tumors, in the majority of cases, occurred on the same side of the body as the root canal(s) or other oral pathology.
Dr. Jones claims that toxins from the bacteria in an infected tooth or jawbone are able to inhibit the proteins that suppress tumor development. A German physician reported similar findings. Dr. Josef Issels reported that, in his 40 years of treating “terminal” cancer patients, 97 percent of his cancer patients had root canals. If these physicians are correct, the cure for cancer may be as simple as having a tooth pulled, then rebuilding your immune system.

An Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II taxis down the flightline before a quarterly load crew competition at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., Jan. 10, 2019. Six different aircraft maintenance units from Luke AFB competed in the 56th Fighter Wing Quarterly Load Crew Competition which evaluates technical proficiency, safety procedures and overall time to load munitions onto respective aircraft.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather, stealth, fifth-generation, multirole combat aircraft, designed for ground-attack and air-superiority missions. It is built by Lockheed Martin and many subcontractors, including Northrop Grumman, Pratt & Whitney, and BAE Systems.
The F-35 has three main models: the conventional takeoff and landing F-35A (CTOL), the short take-off and vertical-landing F-35B (STOVL), and the catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery, carrier-based F-35C (CATOBAR). The F-35 descends from the Lockheed Martin X-35, the design that was awarded the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program over the competing Boeing X-32. The official Lightning II name has proven deeply unpopular and USAF pilots have nicknamed it Panther, instead.
The United States principally funds F-35 development, with additional funding from other NATO members and close U.S. allies, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Canada, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and formerly Turkey. These funders generally receive subcontracts to manufacture components for the aircraft; for example, Turkey was the sole supplier of several F-35 parts until its removal from the program in July 2019. Several other countries have ordered, or are considering ordering, the aircraft.
As the largest and most expensive military program ever, the F-35 became the subject of much scrutiny and criticism in the U.S. and in other countries. In 2013 and 2014, critics argued that the plane was "plagued with design flaws", with many blaming the procurement process in which Lockheed was allowed "to design, test, and produce the F-35 all at the same time," instead of identifying and fixing "defects before firing up its production line". By 2014, the program was "$163 billion over budget [and] seven years behind schedule". Critics also contend that the program's high sunk costs and political momentum make it "too big to kill".
The F-35 first flew on 15 December 2006. In July 2015, the United States Marines declared its first squadron of F-35B fighters ready for deployment. However, the DOD-based durability testing indicated the service life of early-production F-35B aircraft is well under the expected 8,000 flight hours, and may be as low as 2,100 flight hours. Lot 9 and later aircraft include design changes but service life testing has yet to occur. The U.S. Air Force declared its first squadron of F-35As ready for deployment in August 2016. The U.S. Navy declared its first F-35Cs ready in February 2019. In 2018, the F-35 made its combat debut with the Israeli Air Force.
The U.S. stated plan is to buy 2,663 F-35s, which will provide the bulk of the crewed tactical airpower of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps in coming decades. Deliveries of the F-35 for the U.S. military are scheduled until 2037 with a projected service life up to 2070.
Development
F-35 development started in 1992 with the origins of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program and was to culminate in full production by 2018. The X-35 first flew on 24 October 2000 and the F-35A on 15 December 2006.
The F-35 was developed to replace most US fighter jets with the variants of a single design that would be common to all branches of the military. It was developed in co-operation with a number of foreign partners, and, unlike the F-22 Raptor, intended to be available for export. Three variants were designed: the F-35A (CTOL), the F-35B (STOVL), and the F-35C (CATOBAR). Despite being intended to share most of their parts to reduce costs and improve maintenance logistics, by 2017, the effective commonality was only 20%. The program received considerable criticism for cost overruns during development and for the total projected cost of the program over the lifetime of the jets.
By 2017, the program was expected to cost $406.5 billion over its lifetime (i.e. until 2070) for acquisition of the jets, and an additional $1.1 trillion for operations and maintenance. A number of design deficiencies were alleged, such as: carrying a small internal payload; performance inferior to the aircraft being replaced, particularly the F-16; lack of safety in relying on a single engine; and flaws such as the vulnerability of the fuel tank to fire and the propensity for transonic roll-off (wing drop). The possible obsolescence of stealth technology was also criticized.
Design
Overview
Although several experimental designs have been developed since the 1960s, such as the unsuccessful Rockwell XFV-12, the F-35B is to be the first operational supersonic STOVL stealth fighter. The single-engine F-35 resembles the larger twin-engined Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, drawing design elements from it. The exhaust duct design was inspired by the General Dynamics Model 200, proposed for a 1972 supersonic VTOL fighter requirement for the Sea Control Ship.
Lockheed Martin has suggested that the F-35 could replace the USAF's F-15C/D fighters in the air-superiority role and the F-15E Strike Eagle in the ground-attack role. It has also stated the F-35 is intended to have close- and long-range air-to-air capability second only to that of the F-22 Raptor, and that the F-35 has an advantage over the F-22 in basing flexibility and possesses "advanced sensors and information fusion".
Testifying before the House Appropriations Committee on 25 March 2009, acquisition deputy to the assistant secretary of the Air Force, Lt. Gen. Mark D. "Shack" Shackelford, stated that the F-35 is designed to be America's "premier surface-to-air missile killer, and is uniquely equipped for this mission with cutting-edge processing power, synthetic aperture radar integration techniques, and advanced target recognition".
Improvements
Ostensible improvements over past-generation fighter aircraft include:
Durable, low-maintenance stealth technology, using structural fiber mat instead of the high-maintenance coatings of legacy stealth platforms
Integrated avionics and sensor fusion that combine information from off- and on-board sensors to increase the pilot's situational awareness and improve target identification and weapon delivery, and to relay information quickly to other command and control (C2) nodes
High-speed data networking including IEEE 1394b and Fibre Channel (Fibre Channel is also used on Boeing's Super Hornet.
The Autonomic Logistics Global Sustainment, Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS), and Computerized maintenance management system to help ensure the aircraft can remain operational with minimal maintenance manpower The Pentagon has moved to open up the competitive bidding by other companies. This was after Lockheed Martin stated that instead of costing 20% less than the F-16 per flight hour, the F-35 would actually cost 12% more. Though the ALGS is intended to reduce maintenance costs, the company disagrees with including the cost of this system in the aircraft ownership calculations. The USMC has implemented a workaround for a cyber vulnerability in the system. The ALIS system currently requires a shipping-container load of servers to run, but Lockheed is working on a more portable version to support the Marines' expeditionary operations.
Electro-hydrostatic actuators run by a power-by-wire flight-control system
A modern and updated flight simulator, which may be used for a greater fraction of pilot training to reduce the costly flight hours of the actual aircraft
Lightweight, powerful lithium-ion batteries to provide power to run the control surfaces in an emergency
Structural composites in the F-35 are 35% of the airframe weight (up from 25% in the F-22). The majority of these are bismaleimide and composite epoxy materials. The F-35 will be the first mass-produced aircraft to include structural nanocomposites, namely carbon nanotube-reinforced epoxy. Experience of the F-22's problems with corrosion led to the F-35 using a gap filler that causes less galvanic corrosion to the airframe's skin, designed with fewer gaps requiring filler and implementing better drainage. The relatively short 35-foot wingspan of the A and B variants is set by the F-35B's requirement to fit inside the Navy's current amphibious assault ship parking area and elevators; the F-35C's longer wing is considered to be more fuel efficient.
Costs
A U.S. Navy study found that the F-35 will cost 30 to 40% more to maintain than current jet fighters, not accounting for inflation over the F-35's operational lifetime. A Pentagon study concluded a $1 trillion maintenance cost for the entire fleet over its lifespan, not accounting for inflation. The F-35 program office found that as of January 2014, costs for the F-35 fleet over a 53-year lifecycle was $857 billion. Costs for the fighter have been dropping and accounted for the 22 percent life cycle drop since 2010. Lockheed stated that by 2019, pricing for the fifth-generation aircraft will be less than fourth-generation fighters. An F-35A in 2019 is expected to cost $85 million per unit complete with engines and full mission systems, inflation adjusted from $75 million in December 2013.

.
10 days to liftoff and the quarantine period is starting. This is standard procedure to avoid bringing any disease to the International Space Station, and has obviously special importance now, but also marks the end of one year of training. I will share some of the photos from #AlphaTrainingRecap in the next few days, here's the first in the series of 12.
Let's start by the end of the mission: water landing! Like the Apollo capsules, the Crew Dragon lands in water, after descending with parachutes. We should be rescued quickly... if our landing is precise. But in case things go wrong, we are trained to extract ourselves and survive at sea using our emergency equipment. We trained this process in a pool at first, and then in a real body of water at Cape Canaveral where SpaceX has recovery ships and personel staged from. We also rely on lots of military forces to be in alert during launch and landing and come to the rescue if need be. Lots of thanks to them! And yes we look like Power rangers in these training outfits, they're meant to replicate our actual flight suits, without damaging them in water...

NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet participate in an egress training exercise in Port Canaveral, Florida, on Oct. 1, 2020, in preparation for NASA’s SpaceX Crew-2 mission as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program. The exercise involved simulating an emergency situation after splashdown of the Crew Dragon spacecraft. Using a mock-up of the Crew Dragon, the crew practiced exiting the capsule and jumping into the water. Crew-2 is targeted to launch from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A in spring 2021.

Same procedure as every year (yay!) - this weekend I had the joyful honor to attend the Cologne fashion doll collectors' convention : )!
It was a fantastic day, I met with old and dear friends and got to know a whole bunch of lovely new people. My funniest moment was when a very kind french lady and her daughter came to my table and my french skills left me within a second. I could only excuse myself (in french at least!) with a laughing "I DO speak french, but not at this moment" - obviously *rotf* ; )
Ah, it was great! My photos surely aren't the best, they're usually taken in a hurry and only at the beginning of the day, since I'm becoming very busy afterwards, but at least I really did take some :).
To all of you who are going to attend the IT convention soon - I'm wishing you tons of fun, have many, many great moments, meet old and new friends and enjoy every minute. In my heart I'll be with you *hugs*!

Bluebirds Log:
Hello dear log! today I would rather not do a record on todays events, it was so embarrassing!
...a bottom low really, I am so ashamed, actually I blush while writing this...
Well anyhow I am assigned to the Dalek system we have a temporary base circling the main planet, it is a trade/diplomacy mission to the planet that is ruled by a female Filtron, we finally got her to arrive at HQ and I was suppose to welcome them on the runway and guide them to my officer Commander Groinfix and the conference area with all the Company ministers and dignitaries!
Well all could have gone well but all the sudden there was Irena Pinkeydot, I though that she was banned from all diplomatic mission because of her constant flirting and harassment of alien, human and robotic aliens...
But she had re-dyed her hair blond again and borrowed Miss Grays holo-id since she was on leave caring for her firstborn baby... so quite frankly she had tricked her way here pretending to be Miss! I told her off for being so stupid and that if anyone found out she could loose her job... such a irresponsible stunt to pull, she could get sacked...
she just replied: Well Hunny-bird my dearest friend, do you really think they would sack one of their two best pilots when the other one is on leave, what would happen if the blacktron or Zentradi attacked? no way the would fire me hunny-bunny I am far to valuable to them..
I got really annoyed at her, even though I know she was right...she gets away with anything...
...so I told Irena that Filtrons are very easily offended and that procedure and protocol among them is so important that the whole deal could fall if we did anything wrong...
I did a crash-course with her in the culture, told her that, she must not talk to the tiny males directly any question to them must be channeled to the human-sized female and so on, She said she knew some about that since she had been with both sexes at the party planet...
...anyhow when the filtrons Male Tiny ship with the harem of midget filtrons and the large Female ship had landed, she behaved really well, she remembered the 15 greeting by every word...
she did only address the human-sized female...
Then things started to go of towards a retrograde hell-planet!
..the was 5 males... all the sudden one was missing, then there was something bulging in front of Irenas suit... that insane satyriasis woman had at an unguarded moment put one of the males down the suit...
When the Female Filtron found out, she reached for a vibro-axe and went after Irena, still with the tiny male in her suit....
To cut the story short, the officers could only calm the Female Filtron down, when the showed a deep-fake video of Irenas execution but the deal was off, all this for nothing and because of her, she admitted to the boss that she really was Irena then he said, that she was needed in the 34th Graviod sector and he gave her a fast ship since she had to repel a Zentradi attack in that sector...
...so as always there was no consequences for her, while me I am sitting here in the slammer for three days for subverting base regulation...
..and my wife is angry at me since I got a wage deduction because of "my" offense!
Well now I will go back to talk to my conversation with my jail-pet space-spider!

Cincinnati OH Hi-X 3

Hi-Expansion Foam Truck
Shop #25316 One of three purchased. All three were built as hose wagons and converted to Hi-Expansion Foam Trucks in 1966.
Hilton Davis Chemical Company was located at 2235 Langdon Farm Road in the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood.
I don't know what was manufactured at Hilton Davis, but I do know that they had fires on a frequent basis.
There was a guard shack just off to the right of this scene with two guards on duty. When a fire occurred there was a set procedure that was followed. Lets say that there was a fire in building 42. An employee would pick up the phone and call the boiler room and tell them which building had a fire. The boiler operator would then blow a steam whistle, 4 longs and 2 shorts to alert people of the fire.
Upon hearing the steam whistle one guard would call the fire department while a second guard would pull the fire alarm box that was just on the other side of where Hi-X 3 is. Box 4451 - Langdon Farm west of Elbrook would then be struck. The photo next in my Photostream shows the alarm assignment card.
We lived fairly close to this place and the moment I heard the first blast of the whistle I was out the door. I rarely had a camera with me. I would begin running and I could beat the entire assignment to the front gate with the exception of first due Engine 8.
Hi-X 3 was cross-staffed by Engine 48. One firefighter would drive the foam truck to the gate and then the officer and the other firefighter would get off the engine and ride the foam truck in. Engine 48 would then proceed down Langdon Farm Road about a 150 feet where the engineer would charge the standpipe system.
I no longer recall the date when I took this photo but it was the summer of 1972, 1973 or 1974. Wish it was in focus but this still brings backs memories of all the times I ran 4-5 blocks to Hilton Davis.
Frans, your curiosity about how a vesicle is everted intrigued me so I created this 'poor' video for you. It is short enough to study the procedure. I appears to me that the apical part 'is' drawn in telescopically rather than stretching. In this video the springtail demonstrated this by curling the end. Also, I noted that in some of my videos, there is a clear pause after the apical part is drawn into the basal part. How the basal part is retracted is not clear to me.
Please mute the video... Then play the video and you can grab the dot at the end and slide it back it back and forth to watch the procedure.
Been out of commission lately folks,..I know how much y'all missed your Captain... you can calm down now,..I'm still on THIS side of the firmament!!
Well, in June I was diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis of the cervical spine (namely C3 thru C5) which came with numbness in the arms and hands, right down to the fingers, and weakness in the upper body area..muscle atrophy and nerve damage..but curiously NO PAIN,..at all.. subsequently they had to remove my discs and insert these titanium "cages" (as they're called) bound by titanium plates and screws..(its called an ACDF procedure and they go in through the front of the throat) because the degenerating discs(or what was left of them) were pushing IN on my spinal cord in more than one level.. it really sucked too,.. but Nurse Creepella was on call to see that I was well taken care of and didn't miss a dose of my meds, or lift anything over 10 pounds, which precluded me from picking Gomez up, because he is almost 16 pounds now..LOL!!
4 weeks later and I'm back to work and regular activities..
Doc says that there's a 50% chance that levels C6 thru C8 will have to be done as well.. We'll see.. lost a tremendous amount of muscle tissue in my shoulders and my arms due to nerve damage.. all caused by a car wreck I had 20 years ago and is now returning to haunt me,..
But I'm in good hands thanx to my "live-in" Nurse Creepella, and my gifted neurosurgeon,.. ;)
During the procedure, the vasa deferentia of a man are severed, and then tied/sealed in a manner such to prevent sperm from entering into the seminal stream (ejaculate). Knowing about Vasectomy with @ docturs.com/dd/pg/photos/album/12048/vasectomy-reversal-photos-album

1. Use a hole-punch to put a round hole in one side of a cereal box.
2. Aim the hole at the sun during an eclipse
3. Shift until an image appears on the opposite side of the box.
4. Hold it as steady as possible to take a photograph of the inside of the box.
Avoid looking directly at the sun.
My dear friend, Don Briggs, is going in for a medical procedure tomorrow, and my thoughts and prayers have been with him. Don has been more helpful to me than most anyone I've ever known, and has greatly influenced my time here on Flickr. When I looked for a pic to choose to post today, this was the one, because it made me think about how we influence others, and what long "shadows" we cast as we do it!
Some folks give out of a leftover mentality. When Don gives, he makes sure it's the best, not just something he knows is mediocre. He makes his friends feel cherished, because by embracing life the way he does, he makes us all feel like we have more value than we often feel like we do.
I will probably never be the kind of photographer Don has been, in spite of the fantastic DSLR he's given me, but I don't know when I've ever FELT that i was worthy of having the best kind of stuff before! Don has seen value in what I do, even though it's not up to his level of expertise, and he's gone out of his way to make things easier for me. Life can be hard sometimes, but a friend like this man can almost make you forget it.
Thank you, Don, for being a wonderful Flickr contact, a mentor, and a dear friend. I love you dearly and hope that all of the good you've done comes back to you tomorrow, and you will have many more comfortable years to photograph waterfalls, bridges, sculptures and tulip fields, and continue putting the rest of us to shame in the process! All the best and we'll look forward to seeing you post again soon!
Like any delicate procedure, I suppose practice makes perfect! I suspect that if I were to try this, I would only end up poking myself in the eye, so I'm glad that I don't have to do it every time I want to go out with friends! :-)
