...as last holidays. Every time since the little pier of Hvidbjerg Strand has been constructed I have to creep under the building to take a shot. It has become almost an obsession. Needless to say that this exercise is more convenient in Summer and times of low tide. Blavand, Jylland, Denmark

After I post this photo I'll be driving into Waimea to have an endoscopy performed. They're gonna stick a flexible endoscope down my throat to peek around at my inner b'ness.

I made 'em promise to anesthetize me so I don't have to experience whatever gag relfexes come with such a procedure.

Unfortunately this will make it difficult for me to photograph the event. For that, I apologize.

...as every year!

A great day to all of you!

Due to intense harm and evil choices of others you are faced with so much darkness, devastation, difficulty, physical and emotional pain and suffering, unpredictability, fear, terror and so many other challenges that almost completely crush you which you are unable to express with words. And amidst all this suffering, when it feels like too much and you want to quit trying to survive, you work to keep looking for light and moving forward in healthy ways even when it seems impossible. Thank you for pressing on at a pace appropriate for you by working to care for yourself through many forms of nourishment, working to receive healthy support through God’s faithfulness and people who deeply care for you, through rest, tears, and graceful acknowledgment of truth and reality. You still have a long way to go on this journey and it is amazing how far you’ve come.

The tours are well organized and prepared for emergencies. They have procedures to evacuate tourists for emergencies or klaustrophobic anxieties. They DO NOT ALLOW tripods, monopods, or selfie sticks. They have apparently had problems with tourists.

This is an amazing place. Very tight canyon. Every turn shows a new amazing, colorful, glowing, canvas. It was easy to take lots of photos. The tough part was culling the photos when I got home.

There were 9 people (representing 4 families) and a guide in our group. The tours are a little under an hour from start to finish. We were the first of 4 or 5 groups in our time slot. The sent us in about 10 minutes apart. The guide is very informative and educational. There was some pressure to keep the group moving. The guide was helpful and took pictures of the families several times during the tour.

The Navajo name for Lower Antelope Canyon is Hasdez twazi’, which means “the spiral role arches.” Lower Antelope Canyon is about 3,704 feet in elevation and the canyon walls are about 120' above the streambed. This canyon is more narrow to walk through, as it’s shaped like a “V”, so if you are claustrophobic this area is not for you. It goes into the slot canyon and have to maneuver thru closely on stairs, which is harder to walk through. This area is also located within the Le Chee Chapter of the Navajo Nation, near Page, Arizona.

Lubrication information tag hanging from the speed-control pull-chain of a mid-to-late 1950s-vintage Fresh'nd-Aire air circulator (the Successor to the Fan, as the tag boasts), about 2½" (63.5mm) tall. (I haven't yet posted a picture of the unit by itself, but it can be seen here; it has long since been relocated since I took that shot.)

I'll confess...even though this fan (sorry, air circulator) sees regular summertime use, I hadn't lubricated it in about fifteen years. Back when I first put it in service, I lubricated it with synthetic automatic transmission fluid instead of the oil recommended on the tag. Over the years, I noticed no performance loss. Since I had the unit apart on my workbench to clean off the accumulated dust inside and out before the photoshoot, I gave the bearings fresh squirts of ATF to keep the air circulator going for many years to come..

By the way, I couldn't help but search the address on the tag to see what became of the factory. It is now the site of an apartment building.

Mack has a tooth that needs to be extracted and so is having a dental procedure done even as I type this. The surgery techs sent me this photo. Barb is cleaning Mack's teeth and Alexander Hamilton has a front row seat.

They wouldn't let Alex hang out this closely with a client's pet but knew I'd get a kick out of this photo. Which I do.

Actually, what is happening is that Alex likes the warm air that is being pumped through a hose under the towels to keep Mack warm while he's under anesthesia. See the blue hose by Mack's head? That's hooked to his intubation tube. He is fully out of it and Alex is enjoying the warmth and the show.

Continuing my People at Work series. I was visiting my friends Maurice and Pat, when they mentioned the farrier was on his way to work on their horses hooves. I had never seen this before; it was fascinating. Here he is trimming and cleaning up a rear hoof while Pat holds and steadies Panda, the Gypsy Vanner, Panda was okay with the procedure: it isn't the first time and she knows the routine. The guy was very good at his job.

Hoof care is important for horses' health, and all three of my friends' horses receive this treatment regularly.

Two more shots of working people still to come, then on to something new. Or maybe old.

Trapani, on the north-west coast of Sicily, boasts some of Europe's oldest salt marshes, and is still home to some of the windmills once used to drain water from the basins (containing ponds). The evaporation procedure utilises the flat marshlands of Trapani's coast and the long, dry Sicilian summers.

Salt extraction was a technology known to the ancient Egyptians, and in Sicily dates at least from the time of the Greeks and Romans. It has flourished in the Trapani area unto the present day, not for a lack of "dry" salt deposits in Sicily (where there are several mines), but because many cooks prefer sea salt to that harvested from other sources. The windmills, however, were a medieval development.

By the nineteenth century, Sicilian sea salt was exported to European countries as far away as Norway and Russia. Several of the British firms involved in other Sicilian exports, namely Marsala wine and sulpher, helped develop the international trade in sea salt.

Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord --Importance of memory--

Landschaftspark is a public park located in Duisburg-Meiderich, Germany. It was designed in 1991 by Latz + Partner (Peter Latz), with the intention that it work to heal and understand the industrial past, rather than trying to reject it. The park closely associates itself with the past use of the site: a coal and steel production plant (abandoned in 1985, leaving the area significantly polluted) and the agricultural land it had been prior to the mid 19th century

Conception and creation

In 1991, a co-operative-concurrent planning procedure with five international planning teams was held to design the park. Peter Latz’s design was significant, as it attempted to preserve as much of the existing site as possible. Unlike his competitors, Latz recognized the value of the site’s current condition. He allowed the polluted soils to remain in place and be remediated through phytoremediation, and sequestered soils with high toxicity in the existing bunkers. He also found new uses for many of the old structures, and turned the former sewage canal into a method of cleansing the site.

Design

The park is divided into different areas, whose borders were carefully developed by looking at existing conditions (such as how the site had been divided by existing roads and railways, what types of plants had begun to grow in each area, etc.). This piecemeal pattern was then woven together by a series of walkways and waterways, which were placed according to the old railway and sewer systems. While each piece retains its character, it also creates a dialogue with the site surrounding it. Within the main complex, Latz emphasized specific programmatic elements: the concrete bunkers create a space for a series of intimate gardens, old gas tanks have become pools for scuba divers, concrete walls are used by rock climbers, and one of the most central places of the factory, the middle of the former steel mill, has been made into piazza. Each of these spaces uses elements to allow for a specific reading of time.

The site was designed with the idea that a grandfather, who might have worked at the plant, could walk with his grandchildren, explaining what he used to do and what the machinery had been used for. At Landschaftspark, memory was central to the design. Various authors have addressed the ways in which memory can inform the visitor of a site, a concept that became prevalent during Postmodernism.

Flight WZ1904 to Stavropol. Logs show this Russian built aircraft is working hard with several flight sectors each day.

Russian operators of the Superjet 100 encountered difficulties in keeping their fleets airborne as result of sanctions imposed following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In 2023, it emerged that there was a shortage of parts for the SaM146 engines, namely igniter plugs produced in the United States and French fuel filters for which no domestic replacement could be found.Rossiya Airlines expressed fears that only 40% of its Superjet 100 fleet would be active in the spring and summer of 2023 due to lack of parts. In September 2022, UEC Saturn, producer of the SaM146, resorted to cleaning old filters as a method to extend the lifetime of the engines, though this procedure was banned by the Russian regulator due to lack of formal certification.

(I'm having a small procedure, and may be quite late getting to your posts today.)

Today I want to show you something usually unique in the world of birds, but this one is uniqueR. I found this perhaps one of a kind Nuttall's Woodpecker morph on Mt. Diablo, California 12 years ago. Now, morphs are unusual to start with, maybe less so with a woodpeckers whose range is just California, but I'd never seen one before, and I've never seen one since. I would imaging that an Acorn Woodpecker morph would be more unusual, but I just had to bring back this Nuttall's for one last showing. I'ce asked quite a few birders, and thanks to the feather patterns, at least they could identify the species, but no one has been able to tell me the sex of this Brown Morph Nuttall's.

Only three percent of birds are polymorphic, fewer than that are woodpeckers. All things considered, since I've only been involved in avian photography and birding in general, that I have now photographed five morphs is quite a bit of luck. One was a hawk, but the morph of that hawk is as high as five percent, it became its own subspecies (if that's the way it works.) I will post that again when (and if) I can find enough images for a Radical Raptors Day. (More likely a year.)

Nuttall's woodpecker (Dryobates nuttallii) is a species of woodpecker named after naturalist Thomas Nuttall in 1843. They are found in oak woodlands of California and are similar to the ladder-backed woodpecker in both genetics and appearance. Nuttall's woodpecker has black wings and tail feathers with white barring. On the ventral surface, colour is white with black spots and barring. It has a black forehead with white streaks on the sides and an unbarred black region at the top of the back. Adult males have a distinguishable red crown which females do not. I cannot find any record of a Nuttall's morph, but that doesn't mean that this is the only one. It does mean that I've been incredible lucky. Perhaps it's a female where all feathers that should have been black are brown.

Dinner for One, also known as The 90th Birthday, is a two-hander comedy sketch written by British author Lauri Wylie for the theatre. German television station Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) recorded a performance of the piece in 1963, in its original English language. This comedy sketch went on to become the most frequently repeated TV program ever.

The 18-minute single take black-and-white 1963 TV recording featuring British comedians Freddie Frinton and May Warden has become an integral component of the New Year's Eve schedule of several German television stations. Versions of the sketch are also shown in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, the Faroe Islands, Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, South Africa and Australia.

On New Year's Eve of 2005 alone, the sketch has been repeated more than 230 times.

The line "Same procedure as every year" has become a very popular catchphrase in Germany. The phrase has entered everyday vocabulary, and is used in newspaper headlines and advertisements.
