Terrence is launching Upbeat Games, a social enterprise that creates video games addressing social problems. In particular, he and his team are developing Lucid, a game that will support youth in overcoming trauma and grief. The game will then be marketed to schools and counselors as an affordable and engaging tool to support young people who often lack the support network and resources to effectively process traumatizing events in their lives. Funds will go towards the software, web hosting and other materials needed to produce the game as well as the costs of transportation to convene the team of youth video game designers who are collaborating on this project.
Why they are qualified and why their project would qualify for TPP funding:
Terrence and his team have demonstrated that they are reliable, passionate and able to achieve results. They worked diligently to prepare for our pitch event, where they presented their vision for Upbeat Games to a panel of local leaders. Since then, they have been meeting regularly to develop Lucid, and even raised additional funds to attend the E3 video game conference in San Diego. They have a solid team of committed and experienced mentors who are supporting the implementation of this project. This idea is completely aligned with the values of TPP and is an innovative response to an ongoing problem in our community. Violence has become a social norm in most parts of Oakland, and usually very few if any resources are provided to support young people when they experience the loss of a loved one. Based on his own lived experience, TJ and his team are creating an engaging, culturally relevant tool that can be used by schools and counselors to support young people when they experience trauma and grief. This is a social justice solution that promotes peace, health and well being for everyone involved.

‘The Political Reporter’ is a new media installation by Boone, NC-based artist Mark Nystrom that generates random, but intriguing statements with words found on political websites and in the media. Sources include the Obama and Romney presidential campaigns, the Democratic and Republican parties, bloggers and the news media.
‘The Political Reporter’ animates a cloud of letters and periodically makes statements. These images are screen grabs taken while ‘The Political Reporter’ was running on Election Day and the day after.
Letters from words gathered from conservative sources are colored red and ones from liberal sources are blue. ‘The Political Reporter’s’ vocabulary includes over 70,000 words, but only 300 appear on the screen at any given time. As words are used to make statements, they are replaced by randomly chosen new ones from the list of 70,000.
